thanks everyone! I did get the nob hill emily in grey (above) and the cole haan bacara flat in patent blue. I've bought a lovely blue cascade necklace in tanzanite from Thanda Zulu (thandazulu.org) to help incorporate blue with all my black and charcoal. And I've discovered some great new brands to keep my eyes on...

My most comfy pair are Munros.

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/mu.....at/3321752

I would also try Gentle Souls, Anyi Lou, or Paul Green. Those are quality brands that are usually quite comfy.

Just bought my first pair of Eco, and they feel wonderful... Also, wanted animal print (as a neutral), according to YLFs!

I have never found comfortable flats until I came across Born shoes. They have decent support for a flat and a very comfortable footbed. Plus they are reasonably wide so that my feet don't feel squished.

thanks so much for the tips. i checked out barking dog, which led to cob hill, which led to ordering the cute emily flat in gray (and of course I haven't figured out how to upload pics here yet--sorry). i think it'll be a nice alternative to my cordani peep toe black flat. the hunt for a perfect pair of tan continues...

I've had a couple of pairs of GAP ballet flats that were insanely comfy. It's not every style, very hit or miss. Some have a soft foam lining under the footbed and really soft leather that conforms to my feet after a couple of wears. Because the leather's so soft they don't last forever, but for $40ish you can replace them often. I think that's the trade off with flats...for them to be flexible and gentle on your feet they need to be a little more delicate and so you can't expect them to last forever. I prefer the look of a very thin, flexi sole, so this adds to their short lifespan too. I've never gone super high end, but the more expensive ones I've tried seem sturdier, but don't feel as good.

eta: The ones I like are not the city or scrunch flats. On my feet those styles look like regular house slippers.

There's a great blog called Barkingdogshoes.com that specializes in shoes for the very fussy feet. She' has severe foot problems but manages to find and show many great shoes. I'd start there if I were you. I don't have bunions so I can't speak to comfort shoes for you. I love my Me Too flats for cushioning but they might not be wide enough for your needs.

When I want to buy comfortable shoes, or need the option for different widths (I'm not sure but maybe a wider width would accommodate bunions better?), I like to hit up department stores.

I have no idea what part of the world you're in, but you can try places like Macy's or Nordstrom.

I have a pair of ballet flats from Geox that I really like-- the cushioning is amazing, and I like that they're not totally flat and have a tiny bit of arch support. However, I find mine are a bit narrow in the toe box.

For specific companies that have their own stores, try Aerosoles or Naturalizer (do you have that in America?). I've had a bit of luck at Sears as well with finding some Eurosoft shoes that are lovely.

For different styles of flats-- I'm partial to the ballet flat as it goes with my personal style, but smoking slippers are so very in right now, so that's a great option!

Anyone have flats they love that go with skinny or straight leg jeans? I have bunions so need to avoid the super cute pointy toe styles and like a little cushioning and nice leather. I am feeling like I have picky feet. I love clogs but am moving to a different look now that I'm not dragging kids around all the time. Don't really need to worry about budget since I keep my shoes for a long time and haven't had a ton of success with budget shoes (but am always wiling to try!) Thanks!
