I ended up with a black cardigan that's acrylic from TJ Maxx. It looks like cashmere and it works great for me. This is a terrible photo of me, but it shows the simplicity of the sweater. It has ruined me for shorter cardigans, though, and I've got an awful lot of them that I'm no longer wearing...

I also have wool itchiness problems. I had a two tone scarf that I hadn't worn because it was two colors that I loved together but didn't work for my wardrobe. I had a friend turn them into two separate infinity scarves and the moment they were on my neck I knew something was wrong. 5% wool. I'll be giving them away.

Cashmere definitely varies. I thought I could never wear it, but I had a wonderful pair of gloves that I could wear. And I tried on an - even at the outlet- expensive EF sweater that wasn't itchy. I guess I usually look at too low a price point, because those are the only items I could wear.

One reason I have more success at outlets than other stores in winter

is that outlets are less likely to have wool or other scratchy fibers.

I can't wear wool, cashmere, acrylic Etc Etc. and have made many shopping mistakes thinking "this one could be the exception".
I recently shopped TJ Maxx for the first time in a year, specifically looking for the cheaper rayon, spandex, nylon type sweaters. I found a long cardigan to wear with my checked trousers and a slit side pullover for casual wear.

I've had a lot of wool issues, too. Mohair and alpaca is out of the question. But merino wool, pashmina and cashmere are great, especially if you find it with a silk blend (preferrably ca 30% silk, 70% wool). Keep looking and be patient. No reason to givo for second best.

ETA: I see now that I revived an old thread. Would be fun to hear how your search went anyhow.

I have this long 100% rayon cardigan that I've been wearing a lot lately. The brand is Joseph A. -- Mine came from Marshalls or TJ Maxx but apparently it's also available it Macy's. It's a great weight for fall.

JAileen, I've always had wool issues. I used to suffer even with a turtleneck under my fair isle sweaters in high school, but after that I just gave up on wool completely. I'll be heading to Tyson's Corner within the next couple weeks and will look at Lord & Taylor, Arizaphale, thanks for the tip. Texstyle, I don't think I've ever seen anything by Everlane in person, but I will check into it. Thank you!

Have you been bothered by wool before or was it just that sweater that bothered you? I can wear wool, but mohair is a whole different animal. I find it extremely itchy. I definitely wouldn't wear mohair near my neck.

I used to think I could't wear wool -- I'm super-sensitive to anything even a little bit itchy -- but it turns out that a good, soft, fine merino is totally fine. I got a long cardigan in fine merino from Lord&Taylor at the Bay last year. It's knee-length, with buttons, and is still in heavy rotation. I noticed that they still have some of the same ones this year -- in black or in pearl grey.

I don't know what size you need but I wonder if Everlane's cashmere cardigans would work for you? I love the v-necks I've got from them - they don't seem itchy to me and I delicate cycle wash on cold and lay flat to dry. I have a couple now.

I just wanted to second the suggestion of cheaper places like Target or Old Navy. They have lots of synthetic blend sweaters.

Thank you! I went back to TJ Maxx today and tried the sweater on for about ten minutes, and there's no way I could make it work. But I did try on some very fine merino (not the style I wanted, not quite long enough) and I do think that would work. I tried on a lovely cashmere but it was pretty warm and since I often work in a computer lab and overheat (it's the *machines, not me) I don't think that would work for me. Thank you all so much. I've just been a no-wool person for so long that I didn't realize the difference between the kinds of wool. And Diana, excellent point, I guess it would sag if it was cotton.

100% cotton knit, especially in a heavy winter-weight or large garment, is going to be prone to sagging as cotton has little memory and is heavy compared to wool. If you really want a heavy garment in cotton I'd look for something that has some nylon blended in. I don't like acrylic as it is prone to pilling and static.

Personally I would try an extra fine merino or merino blend if I were you. Mohair is one of the itchiest wools so don't discount all wools on account of it.

If it was TJ Maxx, it was probably Max Studio. I see that brand at Marshalls and Ross as well.

I don't wear wool sweaters either and my usual purveyors are Talbots, J Jill, Loft, Old Navy, and Boden online (in the warmer months, they also carry a lot of wool and cashmere). Angie's right that most of the ones out there right now will be wool or wool blends since we're coming into winter clothes in the stores.

I'd check cheaper stores, TBH - TJ Maxx and its ilk, Target, ON, Dress Barn, which are all more likely to have cotton, rayon, or synthetic blends.

I really don't think I can wear a blend, but I don't really know. Do you think I could get away with cashmere or merino? Is cheap cashmere more irritating than expensive cashmere? The cardigan I had on was about 25% wool (mohair) and with a long sleeved silky tee it was still starting to bother me. Believe me, I wanted it to work! I will wear polyester/acrylic/whatever we call manmade fibers now. I've been trying waterfall cardigans and with my short waist and big chest they don't work for me at all. This was so simple that it seemed to streamline everything. I was mesmerized.

I did some looking on the TJ Maxx website and I think the brand was Max Studio.

I popped into TJ Maxx the other day for the first time in years, and the color of a pale grey cardigan made me try it on, even though I haven't tried on a long cardigan ever. The only thing that was wrong with it was that it was wool! It came just above my knees, it had deep vents, dolman sleeves, a slight v neck, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. I just can't wear wool, even over a long-sleeved tee, or I would have snatched it up. I can't remember who the designer/manufacturer was... I want to say Max somebody, but I'm really not sure at all. I'm on the hunt for a similar cardigan to wear with pants to the office (I've gone back to work a couple days a week at a non-profit and am enjoying slowly building a work-appropriate wardrobe). If you've seen something similar (it's got to be under a hundred bucks, I think) in grey, plum, or navy, possibly even black, would you let me know? I don't have time to look everywhere, and I'd greatly appreciate some direction.
