I always find them uncomfortable. Definitely prefer the blue color on you, because it was so perfect with your eyes and hair. Agree with @Kathie that academia tends to be a bit more relaxed (bar very important meetings) but it depends on the image you wish to project. I'd wear an open weave jumper, wrap cardigan or even a shawl over the top of the dress if you wanted to 'formalise' it a little without going for a full blazer getup. </p> <p>With the hats, are the edges slightly wavy? Not sure if I'm reading the photos wrong, but it seems like your hair is sticking out on the sides from the edges, right? I'm no hat expert but personally I won't wear unlined cloth hats (like those ones) due to the static &amp; frizz it creates </p> <p>The velour looks great on you too! Every job I’ve had since I was 19 was in higher ed (spanning small liberal arts colleges and R1 research universities, on both coasts in the US) and with the exception of meeting with the president of my university or board of trustees, I think the dress is fine. It really comes down to your personal brand and whether you feel comfortable in it for the occasion.
