Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the feedback. I'm still trying to figure out just how many plain white tees I need in my basics line-up so all of your suggestions might find their own place in my closet.

I found some of the more expensive tees are in fact sheerer than I'd like but maybe that's why they drape better? Alternative Apparel had a nice fit but is too sheer. I tried a Three Dots and it was good in thickness but runs pretty small - it's tighter than I'd like. I'm thinking Market T's by Rebecca Beeson is going to be my next try.

Target also has some great (and very cheap) tees with a double layer of fabric in the front that keeps the visibility G-rated.

My new go to is the Ann Taylor elbow length sleeve tee with scoop neck in front and back. Love it.

I don't wear plan tees very often anymore, but I found that my Caslon knit tops held up very well, were comfortable, and a substantial enough knit that I wasn't as concerned about "headlights" showing through... hope that's not TMI. *blush*
http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/ca.....FinderId=2

If you're looking for a long sleeved tee, I have this one in chartreuse from Ann Taylor Loft, and really like it both on its own or for layering under other items: http://www.loft.com/loft/produ.....Color=4886

I have had good luck with Banana Republic, although they've changed the cut slightly this year. They have one with some lace trim at the v-neck right now which is still pretty basic and fits perfectly, but I imagine it depends on your body type.

I have tiny shoulders and waist but giant boobs so I need something tapered and not too thin, and I have a very short waist so I need a shortish shirt. I realize those are very specific requirements.

With a white tee-shirt I don't think going very expensive makes much sense because, even if the fabric holds up wear after wear (and wash after wash), in my experience they end up getting yellow in the underarms sooner or later (or, as I refer to it, "pitted out").

I did just find a white tee-shirt I liked a lot at Ann Taylor. It was on sale for $15 in the store--I didn't see it in their online sale. I bought mine Friday, and there were a lot in my local store.

I have wondered if it was worth it or not to spend a little more on a tee because I know my cost per wear comes out to very little since I wear them so much. However, it is my experience that price doesn't seem to equal quality with tees. Thoughts?

I used to think James Perse was good, but honestly for the price they just don't hold up. My Target t-shirts have held up better.

Lands End has varied in my experience. I have some good ones from a few years back that have kept their shape and were good in style except for having cap sleeves. Their layering tees I have found significantly less successful... (I'm buying in the UK though and so the naming/what's available is not necessarily the same)

I'm going to see if the ones that Joy linked to are available on the UK site, though as they look promising!

You might look at Lands End. they have nice smooth cotton tees with enough weight to not be see through...at least they used to, but don't know how quality runs currently but the reviews seem mixed. Here's just one example:
http://www.landsend.com/pp/Sho.....038;sku_0=::CHB&CM_MERCH=IDX_Women-_-KnitTopsPolosTurtlenecks-_-KnitTops&origin=index.

I have some EF tees that were gifts. They are great with skirts or to tuck, but mine are too short for pants. Lately she has had some longer tees and tanks, however.

I like the Favorite Crewneck Tee from the Gap. I currently have 2 black, 2 white and 1 grey and they work perfectly for me. They come in tall and petite sizes too. They go on sale pretty frequently as well which makes it easy to buy backups.

I am getting ready to replace some of my basics and white t-shirts are topping the list. I have never found a "go-to" tee--they are either too thin, too long, too short, etc. Does anyone have a "go-to" tee that they replace year after year? Thanks!
