Seeing as our winter lasts for five months, lol I have quite a selection of winter footwear. So none of it gets worn too often as I rotate a lot (except maybe the Sorels). I try to wipe down leather after wear. The one saving grace is that they don't use salt here, only sand. Because it is too cold for the salt to actually work.

No new suggestions from me, Ornella: I too try to wipe off salt and grit and excess water (after walking in heavy rain e.g.) as often as possible. I do waterproof all my boots with a spray a couple of times each season, and get them re-soled or re-heeled when they are showing wear.

One of the German words for weatherproof sprays is "Pflegesprays", I believe. Or "Imprägnierspray".

"Weather" boots is a good term. I obviously have them too as other pairs (fashion boots) that I want to save are stored away, no use of them now.

I see I might add waterproof spray (Astrid... help!!! What's it called here??? ) to my boots care kit.

Joy, you are too fun

What Suz and Ceit said. We have not had snow and slush for two years! The boots appreciate it but the farmers don't

Yes, boots that I wear outside are weather boots, and I save my nice boots for indoors! I brush or wipe grit off, ensure they dry completely before wearing them again, and make sure I keep up on waterproofing spray.

Like Suz, I wipe off the boots at the end of the day to remove any grit and salt and apply shoe cream every couple of wearings. I also spray them with all weather waterproof protector that I buy from my cobbler.

I try to wipe salt off of them as often as I can (each night). I protect when it looks like they need it.

But mostly, for boots I will wear in actual bad weather (i.e. snow, slush, salt) I try to ensure they are waterproof to begin with. And accept that if they are worn a lot in bad weather I will need to replace more often. It is as simple (and sad) as that!

So I have "weather" boots and "fashion" boots. Booties are fashion boots. I used to have a tall pair of fashion boots but do not have any now. My two tall boots are "weather" boots that I hope have some fashion moxie as well. Plus I have real snow boots (gear).

I have your old lifestyle, so my tips may not help. I use the spray protectant from the store. I also usually carry my work shoes with me in the winter months and change into them at the office. I wear my Sorrels to walk to and from the building when it is snowing, supposed to snow, or there is a lot of salt in the parking lot.

I wonder what a cobbler could do and if it would be cost effective.

I use a protector spray that I buy from the shop at the same time as buying my boots. The sales assistant usually offers it as an option. I spray about once a week.

I don't have any tips but I'm looking forward to the answers. Like you I apply shoe cream regularly. I don't have boot trees (I didn't know they were called that), but I'm stuffing rolled up magazines into them, that works just as well.

I only have the two pairs, but the old black ones are beaten up. I think they definitely need new soles!

My leather boots have suffered after the move and my changed lifestyle. They really work hard and have a lot to endure, namely more walking and lately snow, salt and grit from the pavements. I have a feeling new soles are in order for those that survive to live next winter too, something I did not have to do often in the past as I mostly drove around and weather was not so extreme.

The usual way I take care of the boots is storing them with the boot trees (similar here) and applying shoe cream a bit more often than usual. Is there anything else I could be doing to extend their lifespan?
