It's a rant----grrr---when I think I have a handle --I really don't. At least I'm not just buying coz the arms fit anymore.
It's pretty much anything that's suppose to have shape that frustrates me--since I have none and can use what ever I can buy--in jackets or tops and dresses.
Angie---I am 5'11". I carry my height thru my torso--as Gaylene reminds me of measure--three hands (thumb to pinky) from under little old bust to belly button and 34" leg length in pants.
Jonesy--I don't have a cam with me when I'm out and don't know how to post it anyway--I don't get to the store often either---not trying to be hard about this but this is kinda adds to my frustrations. As well has don't have cash to mess with.
Gaylene--you remind me about belting--I bought a wide elastic belt last fall--my giant foray into modern fashion--I ask the sales person how to wear it and put it around my natural waist--she says no--higher up. What?? It won't even stay up there-hike,hike, -----half on my ribs half off and I can't breath.
Kari--I am so team store and cannot risk buying online for anything for fit!

I know how you feel, Patty. I'm also long waisted; I can fit 2 1/2 hand widths under my bust with no problems-- and I have large hands! I do have a definite indent at my waist that I'd love to belt, but most belted jackets end up with the belt around my rib cage. Tighten the belt and I have trouble breathing. Jackets that are supposed to fit above the waist end up with a waistline 8-10 inches above MY waistline making anything buttoned look really weird. Because I'm only 5' 6", jackets cut on a tall size can look like I've raided my husband's closet. I'm waiting for Angie's answer.....

Hmmm. I'm sure we can sort you out. How tall are you, Patty? And are you leaving your jackets un-buttned?

I have exactly the opposite issue, Patty. I am very short waisted (but also high waisted & long in the rise - I feel like that is kind of a double whammy) so jackets that are cropped on other people hit me at the hip, and proportions are often off. It's just trial and error - and that's why I am more "team store" with clothing, because I like to try things on to see how they will actually fit my body.

You can't know how something will fit until you try it on (and preferably snap a pic so you can see what's what). Are you talking about a jacket that is nipped in at the waist hitting you too high (like, almost empire)? Maybe tall jackets might do the trick? Some retailers do talls in some of their jackets, like J. Crew, Gap, etc.

I am a triangle; my sister has a longer waist than me, and she definitely has this frustration! I have very few tops that fall to where they are supposed to ... I either tuck in or buy tunic tops (my favorite trend EVER).

I say if it fits nicely, then it was meant to be that way. If it doesn't fit nicely, I don't care how it was meant, it is a *back to the rack* by my books.

How do you know where a top or jacket is suppose to fit you when you buy in store?? I am a long waisted rectangle (long arms) and have problems finding anything fitted that fits to my waist. THEN while checking out some of your great finds here in your store links I see that in many descriptions it will say that the item is made to fit above waist or something like that--how do I know if that's right and how it's made to fit when browsing and trying on. I mean basically EVERYTHING fits me higher and i feel like nothing fits and now I know that some things are made to be high waisted by how do I know? Meant to be high waisted on what frame?
I'm more frustrated these days coz for some reason I have been able to find arm length fit but not body length taper to fit at my waist--and I want the taper (or belt!!) there not on my rib cage.
