My toppers are all either long (past the hips) or cropped (at the natural waist). I like to wear the latter under the former when it's 'cold cold' (I posted a Muji display a little while back that reverses this, but I think that's not as mainstream a look).

Lots of people prefer hip length toppers, but that never works for me, because:
a) it hits me at my widest point, &
b) if it's that cold, I'd rather cover my butt!

I guess I see my cropped jackets the same way that I see sleeveless puffers - at first I couldn't understand the point of them but, now that I have them, I get it lol. They're enough to get me through my mild winters without overheating - I pop on some gloves (I run hot everywhere but my extremities for some reason, lol) & I'm good to go!

My longest toppers for cold weather are currently knee-length - I'm drawn to the dramatic swish of maxi lengths, but I'm sure once I get home (where I'd need them most) the hems will just be a drag in the snow & whilst driving.

yes Jaime i like the shapes too - that's why i bought these pieces -- but having a hard time making it work without toooooo much thought!

I don't drive, as we have a great subway system, but I can see that a shorter coat would be easier for driving

On the sort of warm day that the kids wear shorts, I would wear a more cropped silhouette. I like to be warm so it is longer lengths when it is cooler. For me the key is something not tight on the bottom. I am not interested in any sort of body con, but am interested in architectural shapes if that makes sense.

I wouldn’t wear cropped outerwear in winter, and our winters are mild. Too cold. A cropped sweater with a longer coat or jacket over it would be my way of doing that look.

I do really like cropped sweaters and jackets for Autumn and Spring though. That’s when wearing a longer jacket or coat (even a lightweight duster style) can feel a little off for me, given our mild temperatures.

Good points here!

Weather: I live in a tropical temperate climate, so we get lots of rainy chilly weather but true cold is rare, Kkards. Of course teenagers still push the envelope by wearing shorts and miniskirts with puffers and bare legs LOL

Definitions: what is cropped? For most of us who err on the side of practicality, even waist length outerwear feels cropped. The bum gets cold! My cropped rain jacket thing is so cropped it barely covers boobs. Obviously I wear things under it but although I do wear high waisted bottoms , I rarely tuck a casual top. This may be the cause of my feeling of messiness, Irina! The tuck may be key!

LaPed I think I had noticed that 3/4 coats have a hint of “passé” …. Without really realizing I had noticed it. Recently I watched a few episodes of “Wednesday” and did register that in the outdoor scenes in the woods, the teens were all wearing short boxy jackets.

I once had a cropped vest (when I was a teen) but it wasn't outerwear.

In my climate, truly cropped outerwear is seasonally confused/ uncomfortable.

I like longer outerwear -- that covers my bum. I do have one waist length puffer -- I wear it in transitional weather, mostly. My other coats are almost all mid-thigh to mid-calf length.

I wear all the lengths, and I actually divide them into three groups: cropped, medium, and long. Cropped is as you show, waist-length or only a little longer, long is knee length or longer (equivalent or midi/maxi skirts), and medium is in between. Medium (anywhere from hip length to just above-the-knee) is also the most common outerwear length.
What I choose to wear is a matter of both weather -usually if it is really cold cropped wont work - and outfit underneath. To my eye, most pant outfits cant be styled with either medium or long outerwear, while cropped outerwear looks the best with wider/more relaxed pants. Skirts/dresses ( which I only wear in various midi lengths) to my eye require either cropped or long, knee covering outerwear or similar or slightly longer length than the skirt. I do not like to wear them with medium length outerwear as I dislike too many horizonal lines.

I LOVE shorter tops and toppers! But their lengths hit my waist or are a few inches below my waist. I don't wear midriff-baring cropped, or tops and toppers as short as these shown here, Jessikams.

I had a vest like that once, which I wore over untucked shirts and blouses for a while.

It’s function over form for me. Much like cropped pants, I find I am happier to have longer lengths that I can adjust on my own. Outerwear has to cover my waistband (at the very least). Ideally, no shorter than high hip/mid butt.

Don’t have any cropped toppers, but think you’re familiar with my red puffer and new green boiled wool jacket. They are short, but not extreme. I don’t do well with layers sticking out beneath. I think Sally & Nikki are good at that (in general, not rain gear per se).

Ok, for me cropped outwear means it ends at the waist or just slightly below. Mid to low butt covering puffers that I wear are not cropped. Your examples are certainly cropped garments.

I like the look of cropped slightly oversized outwear with high waisted bottoms. This is how it is worn here, in my city. Not the most practical outfit but not everything must be. I don’t wear, it is a style for those who feel comfortable wearing high waisted pants with tucked tops. I enjoy seeing it on others.

I especially like the vest you posted. Could be very versatile and fun thing to wear with high waisted pants or skirts and also with flowing dresses.

I have a couple of leather jackets that are high hip, but they're not really outerwear in any sense. All of my cold weather coats are thigh length. That seems to be my sweet spot. They work with pants or a knee-length dress and tall boots. I have one full length coat, that is lovely and elegant and warm, but it's a lot to wrangle at a restaurant or the theater. No restaurants seem to have hooks to hang up your coats anymore!

At a minimum I like to cover my butt. I will however confess to owning a couple of cropped puffers, one of which is probably 24-25 years old, Lol, and the reasons it’s lasted this long is be use it gets about 5-6 wears per year…so impractical.

I personally have a theory that the young, especially high school(ish) aged run warmer/hot…I live a couple of blocks from a large high school and I know it’s really really really cold if I see them wearing winter coats during morning drop off

as an aside, I don’t see the 2 items you posted as outerwear, I see them as fashion items with an outerwear aesthetic, but that could be a climate related.

I have noticed winter coats getting shorter! I'm sure part of it here, alongside what's trending, is that it's been unseasonably warm and many are reaching for their cute fall jackets instead of their burliest winter parkas. Long parkas seem to have developed a subtle "mom" connotation among the youth. I love the look of sporty cropped parkas, but it has to be mild for me to enjoy wearing them. And if they're too open/roomy at the bottom, they invite drafts. Brrr!

For years I only wore a cropped type jacket for everday use in winter, keeping my longer cloth coat for special occasions only.

However, once puffer coats came out, I decided to buy myself a mid thigh length one and haven't really looked back. To me, its such a practical length to move in, it keeps me warm and is long enough to hide most of my inner layers. They've really improved the styling of them as well, so I'll even wear it with my dressier stuff now.

This length proved so practical that I also bought my spring and fall coats in the same mid thigh length.

Yes l agree that longer is generally better especially for practical garments like rainwear .l think cropped requires more attention to the other proportions in the outfit and can therefore be tricky and if course the length of cropped varies as well making it all very difficult sometimes!I do think high waisted garments need a more cropped top though.

For protection from rain, I like long outerwear. The advantage of shorter styles is that I feel more comfortable wearing them indoors. Long coats tend to be bulky and I take them off when inside.

I have a couple items of cropped outerwear (a boxy puffer vest and a cropped rain jacket, similar to COS item below but with a hood). But most is long (3/4 or duster length vests and coats). I notice that I find a long piece much more practical and versatile: it keeps me warmer and dryer, and best of all I can throw it on over any outfit without too much thought. Whereas the cropped outerwear requires a lot more styling, or else I look like a hot mess with layers sticking out everywhere, colors not matching, etc. I guess I prefer the more cohesive look that a longer outer piece provides.

But I know “the youth” are into the cropped styles! So obviously there are some tricks I don’t know. How do YOU prefer your outerwear length, forum?
