In NZ I don’t believe that we call any style a “Mac”, they’re just called raincoats! I only own one, bought in 2004 for practicality not fashion, for a canoeing trip. It is getting worn looking as now over 20 years old! I might need to buy one more to see me through the rest of my life! (Now aged 65.)
Both your new one and your Jones New York one are much more fashionable. I would probably keep it without altering and just roll up the sleeves.

I’m with Star - I would just turn sleeves up on the Mac and wear it as is. I need sleeves shorten often but sometimes just have to accept the imperfections.

Thank you Angie and all for your great advise/suggestions/feedback.

I was able to get two separate quotes on alteration cost and they both came back for pretty close to 2x's what I paid for the coat (!) - and that is sleeves only. Yes, it was a fab consignment find at a really fab price but I haven't needed alterations for quite some time and was surprised on how expensive tailoring is these days - along with everything else. (Irina, you are so right!).

I am now need to decide if I invest in the alterations or return the Mac. I like it lots but can live without it.

Here's I photo of a very light weight car coat that I have and love (Jones New York from many, many seasons ago) It is quite a bit different from the Mac and definitely not for rain. I do have several rain jackets and other colder weather jackets and coats. Maybe I just continue to enjoy the JNY piece. They are really two different styles so maybe can't compare the two? Anywhoooo...now it's yea or nay on keeping the Mac.

Your feedback , please

Agree with what Irina wrote. I had an actual trench coat the length of your acquisition, but removed the trench details, and now wear it as a Mac. I also own a cropped trench that I got on sale for <60$ CAD.

Tailoring can be expensive. Fix the sleeve length, but enjoy your classic Mac at it’s current length.

I really like your Mac coat. I agree with others, it’s not a question of either short or longer length. If you don’t have a rain coat, this one should be #1. A short trench is a trendy item, you can add it for fun from one of the inexpensive brands or not.

I have been drawn to this style and probably have ... 3 or 4 in different colors. One is an actual trench, in black with trench feature like vent flap, epilates, double breasted, and belted. I have two more, same length generally as yours, one in Navy (Angie has it in a black and white check!), and another in a khaki, both single breasted. I don't think I'll ever own a full length trench coat again, but I find this length and style to be very useful. I also have a green double breast crop, but not crop, just shorter, waist/hip length. I honestly do not reach for this shortest version very much.

Yes, I’m not sure I call this a “ classic trench” but do think it is more wearable than the longer trenches. I don’t often ( as in never)!stride around in the longer trench coats. So the more comfortable “ car length” is more practical. I would want a hood for sure though, or it wouldn’t be grab- and go for actual rainy/ inclement weather.

I also don’t look at the cropped trenches as real rain- wear. Except similar to when I’m wearing some sort of jacket and it starts raining! Or maybe ok, like an umbrella or rain hat. Instead, I think of it as a trending jacket that has certain proportions that work better with tending pants like wide- legs and over bulkier tops. Or maybe a midi skirt. So if I got one it would be important to have a fit and color that worked with whatever I have like that. So to me they are totally different wardrobe/ shop decisions.

Yes! I wrote about the short trench coat trend last month, and here is the post:

https://youlookfab.com/2026/03.....nch-coats/

Encore, the coat is quite nice, although not a trench coat. (It doesn't have trench coat features). Have the sleeves shortened, anyway!

Personally, I don't think it's an either-or-decision! I think you'd enjoy a cheeky cropped trench coat because it will elevate and refresh classic attire. I live in wet and windy Seattle - and am outside on foot most of the time - and find BOTH types of trench coat absolute work horses and wardrobe essentials. Here are mine:

I like this length on you. It reminds me of what they used to call a “car coat.” Very practical and streamlined. Good find!

I’m not a fan of long-to-the-knee trenches, probably because they look frumpy/conservative on short me. But I’m definitely now a fan of the short trench, mostly for looks/trendiness! I have plenty of raincoats/gear for bad weather.

I agree that a cropped one would be fun, unless you want it for rain coverage. Then the longer the better IMO. I do think the style of this one would look nice in a cropped length. Great find!

I have a coat from COS just like yours, and don't consider it a trench , btw. I find it extremely useful in terms of length as it provides the coverage I'd want from a coat . A longer trench is a whole other beast .

The cropped trench is indeed everywhere right now, but I personally don't see it as particularly useful in terms of coverage in wet or windy weather . To me it's a look, rather than a practical piece.

The coat you got looks like a stylish classic to me. I agree with Suz that the cropped trench fulfills a different purpose: it's on trend (but maybe won't have the same longevity as a longer one), and it's good for less wet weather, when you don't need as much coverage. For my climate, I think of a coat like the one you bought--i.e., a long coat for spring and fall--as an essential, whereas the shorter version is a fun addition. And I do have both!

Well, if you wear raincoats a lot and your climate demands it, why not both? :)

This one looks nice, and you got it at a good price, but you will have to alter the sleeves. It is not "trendy" but it is classic. And it keeps your thighs dry if you don't have an umbrella. Does it have a hood? Is a hood a requirement where you live?

The cropped trenches are indeed all the rage and they are really fun! I thought I wouldn't find one useful but mine has turned out to be a workhorse already -- who knew? I also have longer raincoats, though. I don't really see them as equivalent.

Mine's a Helly Hansen (gear company) and it has a removable hood, but I've seen so many now -- if you do a search on the forum you will see many versions on members from different retailers and all the ones I have seen so far are FAB!

I just purchased a Gap full length belt-less trench - a consignment shop find at a super great price! My daughter just returned from Paris and said the current trend is cropped trench. So now I don’t know if I should stick with the classic full length (and pay extra $$ to have the sleeves shortened as roll up doesnt have a finished look) or be trendy and try cropped style??? Your feedback is appreciated!
