I think a wool coat would work for both London and NY at that time of year. I'm in NY all the time and rarely wear anything heavier than a wool coat.

AG, very few people wear weatherproof coats in Europe/Britain. They carry umbrellas and wear hats. Your cashmere coat will do just fine.

Angie, if you're serious about the coat, I have a fab long cashmere coat that will be just perfect... and I'm sure I can borrow a bumbershoot!

Good luck with the carry-on yoga!

Oh, AG! You don't need a weatherproof coat! Get yourself a nice wool coat and carry a fun umbrella or wear a rain hat.

I'm off to take lessons with my yogi so that I can fit into your carry-on.

I'm familiar enough with Seattle weather. I just need the right coat/jacket for rainy cold. Here it's either rainy but 50s OR cold and snowing.

I love London in November. Boots, scarves, coats and gloves for sure. The weather is just like Seattle - bring an umbrella too. Have fun!

The average temperature for that time of year would be 4 degrees celsius, at this time of year I would be wearing a wool coat and boots. I would definitely pack an umbrella as it is very likely to rain at some point. I would pack flat boots if possible because the tourist regions of London are quite a walkable distance apart.

Oooh, thanks everyone! Sounds like I have an excuse to go trench-shopping! Now, on to outfits for the wedding. Actually, my Indian clothes are always out of date so I'll be better off buying when I get there!

I was also thinking trench. I haven't travelled to London though but in piectures everyone always seems to be in trenches.

i think layers will be your friend. this way you can adjust outfits as the weather changes in each locale.

I vote a trench with lining then. If you're not doing a lot of walking around Manhattan or such, it'll be enough (with layers). I wear my down coat when walking out and about, but am perfectly fine with a lighter jacket (parka or such) when driving and coming in and out of stores...

Could your sister lend you a coat for the layover in NY? That way, you don't have to worry about a heavier coat. I've never been to London but from pics I see that trenches are mandatory there LOL. It sounds like a fun trip...

Blargh! I grew up in Boston, and actually think the East coast feels way colder than Alaska, because of the dampness. I will only be stopping in New York to recover between flights, and staying with my sister or brother there, so not a lot of outside time. I could bring my down coat from Alaska and leave it in NY...

I agree NY will be freezing in December. Granted, we're in the 70's today and it will still be nice and warm till the end of October and *maybe* at the beginning of November, but it gets pretty cold around Thanksgiving... I live in my down coat from December on :(. How long are you going to be in NYC? Will you spend a lot of time outdoors?

When I lived in the UK I got a ton of mileage out of trench/raincoats with removable linings. And that would probably be fine for London, but in December it will likely not be warm enough for NYC. (How long are you going to be in New York?)

I'm a frequent traveler and so a light (you might say lazy) packer. When I pack for a trip, I think coat, bag and shoes first--I usually only bring one of each of the first two (not counting a small evening bag/clutch), and typically only two pairs of shoes--a dressy pair and a pair that I'm comfortable walking in. Would something like that work for you?
