Suja - Agreed, and all the flats and low heels are such a breath of fresh air. Looking forward to seeing your rendition of the flared skirt look.

Kellygirl - You are going to rock the sneakers look for sure.

Crutcher - You always make me smile, thank you.

Angie - Hugs! Missed you too. *nodding* about your upscale athletic sneaker comment. Belgium is very much into this look too:-)

Ginkgo - I think going with a leather sneaker for your European trip in the Fall is a very smart plan.

Neel - Couldn't agree more:-)

Shannon - I can so see you rocking white sneakers. And thank you so much for the heel lift tip, I am going to give that a try asap. Can you just buy them in a shoe store? Also, the Achilles tendon thing makes a lot of sense, I think that may be the case for me too.

Suz (and Angie) - Ah, so that look has been around for quite some time then, good to know. And exactly, it's takes a minute to adjust to but I thought it was fun on the gals who wore it.

Mia - That is an excellent point.

Aida (and Shevia) - I hear you, I too am hoping the pointy toe will be around for quite some time to come. I noticed the black sheer hose because we really don't see it all that often here in Belgium (in Summertime that is), interesting to hear women are also sporting the look in your neck of the woods.

Gigi - Yes! I'd love to read more about that too.

Deb - Thank you, sweet lady.

Joy - I always wonder why that is: that certain items that are all over the stores are just not being worn on the streets.

Firecracker - Exactly, that was my first reaction too (about it being weather-related).

Deborah - Do report back on the Birkies situation once your Summer is in full swing.

Sparks - I like the idea of storing some shoes at the office, so you don't need to schlep them around each day I saw some people in suits with sneakers, and tons of other outfits worn with sneakers too. It was the most worn shoe for sure.

Rachylou - Good question:-) I'm starting to think they never stopped wearing them indeed.

Marley - *nodding*, I share your enthusiasm :-)

Thank you, Mona!

I have a question... did London gals ever stop wearing black stockings? I feel like that's been going since the '80s without a breather...

Having grown up in London, it doesn't surprise me at all that nobody wears Birks. They are ugly as all hell and not appropriate for the very changeable weather in England. They just look sloppy and dirty, I dont care how they are styled.

Londoners wear trainers to and from work. They'll keep shoes in their offices or carry a pair in their handbag to change into. It also means they don't have to carry their trainers (sneakers?) to and from if they're going to the gym before/after work. I have to be honest and say it's not really a fashion trend except in certain areas (out East for example). If you saw sports trainers and suits/skirts it was probably a comfort while commuting issue.

The black tights and short skirts has been raging for years in London - 9 days out of 10 it's too cold for anything else. :)

Birkies were trending about 10 years ago. Not so now. In the UK they're quite a high price to pay for something you may only wear one or two weeks a year due to weather constraints.

Great report, Inge! Thank you! I wonder if Londoners aren't on board with the Birks yet because it hasn't been warm long enough? Mia may be onto something, too--London may have "been there, done that" too recently and/or may be resisting the Birkie trend with a bit of obstinate or contrarian attitude.

Inge, thank you for this report. I have a friend going to London this fall who will be interested. I saw lots of Irish girls in black stockings and ballet flats with flared skirts too. It reminded me a little of River Dance so I thought it was a regional thing there. I remember years ago seeing lots of bright dresses in London shops but no one on the street was wearing them. This past trip I saw lots of fabric belts and sashes and scarves as belts in Irish shop windows on mannequins, but not on the street.

Fun! Thanks for the report, Inge. How interesting about the pointy footwear, I just can't get enough; I'm going to be sad if/when rounded toes swing back around. The sheer hose is a London thing? I notice it off an on out here in the PNW too, though a bit less these days. Glad to hear your feet were happy and comfy for all of your walking!

I love these reports. Funny about Birkenstocks because about 10 years ago it seemed every woman in London was sporting a pair of white single strap Birkies with their cotton skirts and dresses in high summer. I always notice that there is a very clear "dress code" at any one time though and it doesn't necessarily reflect what we see in North America in magazines etc.

I am glad to hear that London lasses are staying true to flat shoes.

I noticed the black hose trend in London when I was last there, also. It's definitely a London thing. It takes my eyes a bit of time to adjust to a pastel dress with black nylons...but then again, in the 80s, it was white nylons with everything. So...

No Birkies in London? Wow. I'm quite surprised. I may have to look at the white sneaker trend myself. I'm so glad this season of footwear includes comfortable options for Team Fussy Feet.

I found out that shoes that rub on the back of my heel is caused by the fact that I have a low heel indent - in other words, where my Achilles tendon is and where it dents inward on the back of my ankle, is fairly low. All I do is add a slight heel lift into my shoe and voila - my foot is lifted just enough so that the shoe doesn't rub. Give it a bash Inge and see if it helps.

I haven't quite seen birkenstocks or even sneaks with dressy outfits here yet. So it's definitely a Euro thing and it makes complete sense with the amount of time people spend on foot commuting in public transports there.

Thanks for the report, Inge. I'm still contemplating sneakers, probably neutral, as I figure the bright color trend might taper off quickly. Because of an upcoming trip to Europe in October/November, I'm thinking of waiting and getting some leather ones (maybe Seibel) so that I can better handle the rain.

GREAT report, Inge. Thanks, and SO glad you had a great time. I missed you.

"It was ALL about practical, low-heeled footwear, both for tourists and Londoners!" That's the Euro way.

I had a hunch that the upscale athletic sneaker worn with fashionable intention reigned supreme in London. It makes soooooo much sense. In the Netherlands and Paris too. Wooohooooo. HAPPY FEET.

I knew about the black stocking thing too - very London. And of course - booties are year round these days.

No Birkies is a big surprise. High five on the Propets. xo

p.s. Ask Shannon what she does to lift her heel in shoes so that they do not rub.

I was in London this weekend and had a marvelous time. The weather was absolutely lovely: sunny all weekend with temps around 24-25 °C (75-77 F), so I paid particular attention to what people were wearing on their feet (for lots of city walking in warmer weather).

It was ALL about practical, low-heeled footwear, both for tourists and Londoners! I think I only saw about 10 women wearing high heels, and that was for going out in the evening. Otherwise, not a single heel higher than 1/2-1 inch, and most shoes completely flat, actually.

- The big athletic sneaker ruled! It was everywhere. Nike, New Balance, Puma, Adidas, generic brands… Worn with trousers, shorts, skirts, dresses, all jeans silhouettes. With casual and more dressy outfits. Some bright-coloured styles, but most often neutral colours. So fun to see. And it makes a so much sense. Many people cover a lot of distance every day, and commute by bus or tube (lots of stairs to navigate).

- In second place were flat sandals (mostly strappy styles, some cage sandals) and round-toe ballet flats. Black, brown, white, cream, metallics, some bright colours but not a lot.

- Quite a lot of booties and ankle boots around too, despite the warm weather. And again, mostly dark and neutral colours.

- Some oxfords (as sported by the ladies, lots of blokes were wearing super smart outfits with oxfords), slipper flats and loafers, but not many at all.

- Nary a Birkenstock in sight. That kind of surprised me, because they are everywhere in Belgium. I didn't see more than 20 people sporting them, myself included :-)

- Another surprise: there were plenty of pointy-toe shoes in the stores, but people in the street were not wearing them (yet).

Oh, and something else that really stood out to me: women in their twenties, thirties and forties wearing black nylons (not opaque) with shorter flared skirts or frocks (just above the knee to several inches above the knee) and flats (usually ballet flats, sometimes booties). Definitely a "mini trend" in London.

My feet were extremely happy in my white Birkenstocks, and in the white Propét sneakers that Angie also has (super comfortable and supportive for all day walking, I did add socks to protect the top of my heel).
