The shoulders fit perfectly as is and I don't think I'd be able to layer it over anything if I was to get the smaller size. The shoulders are also a bit too wide. It does seem a bit too roomy on you in the lower part. The color is good on you - it is purply burgundy color really rather than red. Are you wearing any bulk (i.e. sweater) under it at all? I also fell in love with Sveta's coat and tried on a Small at the store. It's a similar style to my favorite corduroy (I know, I know--corduroy gets no love round here) coat but after seeing the pics, I'm wondering if the shoulder line is too strong for my already broad shoulders. FWIW, my only waterproof jacket is a short, black trench from Costco (going on 4 years old.)
