You know, I've always had clarity about what I like and don't like about shoes but my pant/shoe game is weak. So thanks, everyone, for chiming in with the interesting and helpful details.

Angie, your shoe collection and thoughtfulness about putting them together with the PPL is an inspiration.

And thanks for the illustrations, verbal and pictorial, L'Abeille and Jenni! You've given me something to think about.

I have a variety of both. I personally find they serve different purposes in my wardrobe. I tend to wear the oxfords during winter and the loafers in the summer.

I would find those two pairs you have interchangeable with my wardrobe, they are both flat and I would wear them with the same bottoms. I don't think I would wear either with dresses but I like them with pants, both full length and cropped.

Personally, I don't find loafers interchangeable with flat oxfords for my own style.

Loafers are more dainty, dressy and streamlined - and often look better with my outfits than flat oxfords. Flat oxfords are more masculine, casual and maximal. See the assortment from my wardrobe.

I agree that those particular franco Sarto loafers are a bit sportier, preppier and slightly more masculine than the oxfords you show.

OK, my take on this. I have gold brogues ( are they also called Oxfords? Similar style but no stitching) and gold/navy/tan loafers. I wear them for similar purposes, but I see when comparing ( pic attached) that you can see sock with one and not the other. These are my new olive pants, wear number 3. BTW I would wear fine navy socks with the loafers but they are wet having just been washed, so have put on black socks for the pic. I think both have a similar vibe but with these pants I like the deeper gold of the brogues and that is what I wore earlier this week. Not sure if this helps you. For you I do prefer the Oxfords you have ordered actually, than the loafers. Just my opinion.

In my own closet (which has a lot of loafers and oxfords both), they do fit a slightly different niche. Now that you are making me pay attention; mostly I try stuff on and go "Naah".

If I had thought about it before, I would have pegged the oxfords as "masculine" and the loafers as "feminine" (or maybe neutral). I had orthopedic saddle shoes that I hated so much, I accidentally left them in Montreal after Expo 67. I have only fairly recently come around to wearing oxfords. I like the look with a dress or skirt (sometimes); it feels like a bit of juxtaposition. (I also think of it as a 30's or 40s look which I like to channel sometimes.) Wearing oxfords with pants feels more "masculine", in that I make an effort to put something more traditionally "feminine" in the outfit, even if it is just to wear my long hair loose rather than tied back.

Loafers on the other hand... They look OK to me with a shirtdress, or a pleated skirt, or something else with a preppy or "librarian" vibe, but I'm less likely to wear them with an A-line dress than I am oxfords. They are my winter default with trousers for work though. Largely because stopping to tie on oxfords when I change out of my boots in the morning, and again if I go out at lunch, is a pain.

It's entirely possible that once warm weather comes and I start wearing shoes outdoors again, I will remember all kinds of dress/skirt outfits that I like with loafers... I am fickle.

I am one of those who has a "thing" about matching vamp height and pants length. Mostly, I like to see a discrete amount of skin (or in winter sock!) between the hem and the top of the vamp. So with full length skinnies I like ballet flats, with the top of the foot visible, but with ankle baring pants I like a higher vamp shoe. It's the same principle I guess as the wearing of booties or high-ankle-strap shoes with true crops or midi skirts.

Weirder yet, I hear your point, JAileen, and don't disagree! Loafers have a greater range, I think, from dressy to very casual.

Loving that you're diving into oxfords again. I, too, wore saddle shoes as a young kid & am excited to try that style again.

I think of oxfords as masculine and loafers as feminine, the opposite of you, Greenjeans. Isn't that weird?

I used to wear loafers with skirts all the time for work. I've bought a couple pairs of oxfords recently, but until then, hadn't worn them since I was in school. I wore solid white saddle shoes from kindergarten through third grade, and then brown and taupe ones in high school. The white ones were my mother's choice, and I wore them with dresses. In high school I wore my saddle shoes with Levis. The oxfords I've bought more recently are a dark pewter and a bright bright silver. The silver ones are beautiful, and match my hair pretty well, but they feel too showy to me for some reason. The pewter ones feel more wearable to me. It's funny because I have several pairs of silver shoes that don't feel showy. I wore the pewter ones to a meeting Thursday with grey straight jeans (rolled up a bit), a chambray shirt, and my green utility jacket. I felt appropriate and up to date for once.

Great feedback, thank you.

Those of you with an eye for shoe-pant combos, can you say more about vamps, pant lengths and pant leg width? I am new to thinking about shoes and pants (it's been my way to buy one or so pairs of shoes or boots per year & wear them into the ground with just about everything). But paying more attention now to what works with what and why, & still learning.

FWIW, the oxfords above feel more like me. They are on their way (backordered) and should arrive in a couple of weeks. The loafers, on the other hand, are a little outside my comfort zone, sportier than what I'd typically wear, which makes them interesting. They are the Franco Sartos Angie has raved about. I think of loafers as a more preppy, urban, masculine shoe. Whereas the oxfords feel more old fashioned and feminine to me.

What traci said , but also, for me it depends a lot on the exact outfits I plan to wear.
Both of those have high vamps but some loafers have a lower profile vamp than those FS ones. So I can wear some loafers with pants that would not work with oxfords.
Plus, I have a super- ticky eye for certain shoe- bottom combinations.
I agree about considering both style and color in case you'd get more outfit out of something else instead of 2 nude flats. Yet, if the color and style are a wardrobe Essential, I might wear both a lot but trade off for my fussy feet.
The best way for me to add footwear is to get it home and try on with lots of things and then be ruthless about both comfort and versatility.

I think it depends on how minimal you're trying to go with your wardrobe. If you're trying to pare down to the bare bones, I think the oxfords are the more versatile pair of shoes. The loafers do give a little something different to an outfit. I wear loafers with some dresses; I especially like the look with a shirt dress. To me, oxfords can work with a more delicate dress that would feel more jarring with loafers.

I think the similar color of these two shoes makes them compete with each other too. Consider a loafer in a darker or brighter color, as more of a statement shoe, while the oxford will be your neutral, grounding shoe.

I have a hard time working my loafers into outfits, but I wear my oxfords all the time. So empirically, I think they don't quite fill the same niche. Now that I have more cropped pants I think it'll be easier to wear the loafers.

Both oxfords and loafers usually have high vamps so serve a similar purpose. If you wear socks, they show less with oxfords. I would wear both refined oxfords and loafers with a dress and not chunky ones, but that is just my style. I like them on others. Do you regularly take your shoes off indoors? Then loafers may be the most practical choice. Oxfords would be better for narrow or low volume feet that might walk out of a slip-on.
