Yeah Angie! I have a pair of penny loafers too, but I don't know what to wear them with without looking like it's 1980 again.

Classics are classic for a reason. My DD22 came home from uni and found me wearing loafers and said "Wow, you are so on top of the trends. Wait... are those new or have you had them forever?"

The thing with classics is, you can pull them out whenever they cycle through trendy. In the meantime you can file them away, or you can wear them anyway, with more updated pieces, when you don't mind being boring.

I would keep a classic, quality, comfortable pair of footwear like this for sure. You can style them to suit you and fabbers can help for sure.

I have a similar pair (mustard yellow ancient prada) and I wear them with my narrow cropped trousers a la Angie's post yesterday and usually throw a current looking top and a short trench over it. I am in my 50's and I think it's appropriate and not too dowdy. I also wear them with bf jeans (faded wash) and a blazer.

What I've found with my shoes is they cycle in and out but they have always come back. Some of the more "out there" riffs on the look won't have the longevity imo.

So long as you aren't wearing them with khakis... hehe. But I'd try them with straight legs...

Since the humble loafer is currently having a fashion moment, bringing out your classics and having them look up-to-date is the kind of thing that will completely depend on what you wear them with.

Kind of like "geek chic" eyewear. If your style is conservative to begin with and you're reaching a certain age, the "chic" part can really get lost.

I'm sure we could go googling and find tons of pictures of 6-foot-tall 110-pound teenagers sporting classic penny loafers and looking cutting-edge and sexy as hell. But let's face it -- they'd look like that no matter what they wore. :)

ETA: the main thing I meant to say is that I think you can absolutely wear them and look current, but it's probably going to take something edgier than bootcuts.

I have a pair I've owned for a long time that are SO comfy but I'm not sure if they are loafers Angie is recommending. They are brown Bass penny loafers and they have a lot of life left in them. I usually wear them with boot cut jeans. Is there another way to wear them? Are they so dated I should give up on them?

They look very similar to these but are women's shoes: http://ghbass.com/shop/weejuns.....3_634.html

I'm hoping I can still get away with wearing them. I don't mind the mannish vibe of them.

But be honest! I can take it.
