Love this thread!

UmmLila you said it about the woodchucks. DH put up a huge fence and electrified it to keep them out of his veg garden. Last year there was a little hole and a young one got in...they can ruin a row of broccoli in about 5 minutes. A few years ago one got it and took a bite out of every single squash...and there were over a dozen of them. Ruined every one. Not cute animals at all....and we are huge animal lovers.

My Siamese cat trapped a possum in a tree in front of our house a few years back. She didn't know what to do about it other than sit at the base of the tree and stare up at it, and the possum seemed unwilling to move. That was the first time I'd seen one close up.

We took her back inside, locked the kitty door, and the possum then left on its own.

Very cute! So nice of you to rescue the little guy, we would have rescued him too. We have all sorts of wildlife in our yard that is a native prairie/meadow but I've yet to see a possum up close.

Nebraskim: When I was a teenager I worked at our city's science museum and gave animal talks about our resident opposum. I have loved them ever since. Many people think they are vicious and rabid which is such a shame. I hope he/she stays (but out of reach of my dogs).

Squee. I love possums. They are so unusual (marsupials) and misunderstood because they are not conventionally attractive and they hiss. But they are so cool. Thanks for being kind to this one.

Good for you for coming to possum defense UmmLila -- I stayed in a youth hostel once in the Scottish highlands and they had a pine marten that would stop by occasionally for peanut butter sandwiches -- they are pretty irresistible.

One time many years ago, my dog was out in the yard barking fiercely at a possum doing its best to pretend to be curled up and dead. She did not bite it. My husband and his brother who was visiting had never heard of possums and they could not figure out what this large, panting ball of fur was and they thought poking it with a stick to get it moving was a good idea. All three, dog and guys, got yelled at and made to come inside. I felt sorry for the possum so I went back out and left a peanut butter sandwich for it. Both were gone by morning.

I want a rock chuck in my yard. The local woodchucks are not quite as cute and they make it very difficult to grow vegetables.

Yes, they're marmots. I live in Eastern WA and we have them all over. I grew up seeing them running around rock slides or rocky river embankments. We now live in the middle of flat (but rocky) pasture ground and I didn't realize they lived here until just this week. They chirp like a really loud bird (I initially thought the dogs cornered a bird). I think they can hold their own though because our dog now has a nice bite mark on his leg.

JAileen: I love your terrier stories! I can definitely relate to the middle of the night showdowns. Although thankfully it's just been possums, squirrels, and rabbits!

Rachey: I didn't see a mama or siblings. 8 inches is not including tail, so I think he is a young juvenile.

I know this won't be everyone's cup of tea, but look at this cute little guy! He is about 8 inches long. He was disappointed when I suggested that a yard with two dachshunds was not the best place to camp. He and one of my dogs had a 1:00 a.m. growling and hissing match that I had to break up a few weeks ago. I didn't realize he had stayed until this morning when I heard him growling at the back of the garden. I relocated him and the log he was under to part of the yard the dogs can't access, so hopefully everyone can coexist.
