Oh, guilt. I see Helena and Ket both mention it. I call mine “Protestant guilt” as a riff off “Catholic guilt” which I have often heard of, but I was brought up very Protestant. I have worked hard to get over it and am doing OK! Hence buying the more expensive small chocolate blocks sometimes with special flavours!

For me its:

High quality liquors like single malt Lagavulin Scotch (often a birthday gift for Hubs)
Coffee
Tea
Cocoa
Cigars and pipe tobacco
Cheese
Fruit orchard visits
Loungewear, camisoles, underwear, and pajamas
Magazines, catalog, and coffee table books

Some of these we keep on hand all the time, some are thrifted, some are very seasonal or occasional.

Additionally to those:
Herbs and flowers for the garden. We have filled our tiny yard with tons of lavender, fruit trees, and potted herbs. Zero grass to worry about. I love walking around it in the mornings and evenings.

Chickens. We keep chickens. I love our girls. They're precious to hold and relaxing to watch. The fresh eggs are outstanding, too.

Perfume. Favorite all this year is Narcisco Rodrigues For Her. My bottle is nearly empty. I also really love a niche perfume from Poesie, called Elemental Tea Party. It smells of tea, whisky, leaves, and smoke. It's sweet with an aftershave type musk and smoke to temper it.

I feel like this list makes me seem rather stuffy and such. I actually grew up very poor and can feel guilty sometimes for such indulgences. :}

I am a National Park geek, so every time we visit a National Park I get a mug. My favorite thing is choosing one of my NP mugs every morning and relaxing with a cup of coffee.
Another little luxury is a sunny summer “zero day” - one with zero appointments or commitments (we help take care of my 89 year old MIL, who we love very much but she can’t get around well anymore). I live in nature’s playground- right between the Catskills and Adirondacks in NY - so that luxurious zero sunny summer day gets spent kayaking, paddleboarding, and/or hiking.

I'm struggling with this haha ... My DH says I never do this! I am very practical and also have guilt issues haha. Not to say I'm not supremely blessed, to Jenny's point, but just that I struggle to do things for myself for the pure joy of it. I do buy fresh flowers something 'just because', and I definitely will splurge on unnecessary lip products, although I've been working on not doing this!

Clarifying that the luxury of the fresh local food isn't due to the cost, which is probably about same as the grocery produce, but it's fleeting nature/harvest variability due to weather conditions/ watching it grow/ knowing the farmers.
If something is grown locally, I generally won't buy it fresh out of season in the grocery store.

I love this thread but feel like a party pooper because I actively dislike tea, scented candles, most scented body products, and being touched and fussed over by non-intimates in things like beauty services and massages, and (TMI) I usually sleep naked so have no need of fancy night clothes.I really sound like a curmudgeon when I see that all written down, haha. However, I do love nice bras. I also got two! Printfresh robes, one cotton and one light flannel (with print of dogs!), and they make me happy. I love Smartwool socks for padding around the house in the winter. And, of course, BREAD. Also, a small Greek food shop that is not that convenient but also not that inconvenient (just enough to make it feel like a special treat mission) makes the best yogurt I have ever tasted.
Fruit-flavored seltzer waters are another favorite tiny indulgence. But you are inspiring me to get it together and buy some good sheets, and also to feel less grumpy about the price of berries at the farmers’ market.

I'm with Judy about nature and time :)
I've been enjoying my back porch again, in the mornings with my coffee, then at night with Dr. ST and the pets. Mindful screen free time!

Living in a rural area gives me access to fresh local produce (and sunflowers!) and I have my own little garden space and herb pots. Started making sourdough bread too this year.

Of course this time of year I'm outside a lot- biking, hiking, paddleboarding, etc, which feels luxurious since I have a non traditional work schedule and don't have to deal with crowds. I no longer even feel the need to travel, I just like having the time to enjoy my little part of the world.

I can relate to many of the luxuries here...like great foods or sheets. Or clothes with luxurious feeling fabric, for me it would be Japanese denim. But I think one of my greatest luxuries is time. To take time. Like to just sit and get immersed in reading a book, or to just feel the day, to notice how the light comes in the window or something simple like that. Or observing or hearing nature like the birds. Even when life was busier for me with working and long commutes, to take a moment to relax and take in my environment, even if it is just a moment on a bus or a freeway, can make me feel like I have time and having time makes me feel luxurious. Hope that makes sense!

Now I am lusting after a new perfume and a Max Mara wrap coat, haha. And maybe some tea , and the time to drink and enjoy it . Oh and I see your point about skin care not being a luxury - I find it non-negotiable too and it's a must for my mental health, lol. I buy the best I can as well, as looking youthful and vibrant is important to me as I'm still working a public facing role. Maybe once retirement happens , my standards will loosen . But I think luxury has different meanings to each of us .

Earl Grey, Lady Grey, Matcha Green tea.
Recently I felt that using my regular cologne on my day off ( Jo Malone - Earl Grey and Cucumber - my fav for the last 3 years ) makes me feel like I'm working and not having free day. I decided to treat myself to a new one -Jo Malone Frangipani Flower - very floral and summery.

What a lovely thread! I like how small indulgences create such comfort in daily life.

I am with Irina and Sal, a crisp linen bedding, especially when dry lined, is always a little treat! we use single duvet, so Mr Minu can have his light duvet and mine is extra warm as I am always cold.

My other luxury treats includes loose tea from Marriage Frères, it feels like a little ceremony each time I brew a cup - the ritual of it is almost as luxurious as the taste. Same with really good coffee in the morning; it can make an ordinary morning into something special.

My black wrap coat is one of those pieces that makes me feel put-together instantly, no matter what I'm wearing underneath. And investing in quality skincare and hair products means I'm treating myself well every single day, not just on special occasions.

What I love about these little luxuries is that it's about creating moments of genuine pleasure and comfort in everyday life. Sometimes the smallest indulgences have the biggest impact on how we feel.

Thanks for the post, Irina! These have been fun to read and it's also a nice reminder to spend some moments paying attention to those things we enjoy. A Glimmer List has always felt more authentic to me than a Gratitude List. Mine are:

Matcha on subscription from Kettl so I never run out and don't have to remember to order. I have three favorites and choose which one each morning based on what the day holds. Morning Matcha is a ritual so it's worth the best.

Artisan bean to bar chocolate from a local chocolatier.

Very interesting seeing what little luxuries people enjoy.

Mine would be french pharmacy skincare products, not overly expensive but after much trial and error with cheaper products, their prices seem worth it to me. I'm also okay with paying to see a private dermatologist now, as its practically impossible to get a consultation with a public dermatologist anymore.

I also enjoy buying items at artisan craft fairs. Love owning something that's good quality, mostly handmade and unique.

Jenn NZ, I want to reply to you separately, my reply will be a bit more detailed :)

I should’ve probably started with it, my understanding of “little luxuries “. I’ll try to do it now.

We all have our baseline when it comes to good and services. It’s based on our incomes, lifestyle, priorities and personality. And there is a little extra. Not one time extravagant purchase but rather something consistent, at least as a category. My luxury choices might be someone’s baseline and vice versa.

Here is my example. My hair care products are on expensive (to me) side. I consider it necessary to care for my thinning hair. I don’t feel anything extra special when using it. This is my baseline. Buying Chanel lip gloss is extra and pure indulgence. My makeup products are in more budget friendly category and expensive lip product is certainly a luxury to me.

Another good example is swimsuits. I use a serviceable kind and haven’t paid more than $40. I might pay more in the future but would rather not. Lots of women buy expensive swimming wear because it makes them feel fabulous.

My 40 pairs of shoes is OK for me. I don’t buy luxury shoes, this number is ok, it will fluctuate with time and needs.

And I always will look for bargains and on sale items! Even when buying little luxuries That is my nature. :)

So many great responses! Thank you. Too many to address individually but I would like to try.
Roberta & Penny, great ideas!
Echo, I’ve been promising myself for a couple of years to sort my loungewear. I would love for it to be intentional and not random old pieces I accumulated over the years.

Lisa & indigoprint, interesting! Thanks for shaping.

Cat2, thanks!
Runcarla, oh, you are my ironing sister! Only after switching to linen bedding, I stop ironing sheets and duvet covers as I like slightly wrinkly linen texture or don’t want to ruin fresh outdoor smell. I still faithfully iron all pillowcases!
Carol, yes, I agree some products are justifiably expensive and are a treat.

Olive Green, oh, a good ice cream! We try not to eat it too often (and fail at that!) and splurge on it a bit. I buy small containers only! :)

Lately my little luxuries have been skincare- and food-related. Slowly but surely, I switched all my skincare and cosmetics to natural cosmetics made by local/artisanal producers in small batches using organic products. It is such a pleasure to use them.
Slowly, I am trying to adopt these habits in food shopping as well. Discovering varied, all natural, organic ingredients has been quite an enjoyable experience but somewhat luxurious as well, because the prices can run quite high. I am talking about raw cocoa, nut butters and flours, grains and seeds, 80% dark chocolate, etc.

Heh, Jenni, Bijou and I are food triplets. The most luxurious thing I do regularly is food shopping. The good ice cream (Tillamook anything) and the cheese and since we eat meat, a local butcher shop with almost all local ranch meats. And flowers, I make mixed bouquets with store bought and land trimmings, they are gorgeous and make me smile.
We are 30 miles from stores (a great luxury is semi-rural living in retirement) so services like Amazon Prime are lifesavers to older people here.
And books. Having two or three lined up and ready to go on Kindle is a joy.

Interesting post Irina! For me it's always been lipsticks and, lately, relaxing massages at the beauty salon with scented oils or salt on a regular basis.

If I have a store credit or something is just a few dollars, I'll be buying any little luxury.

Recently they had a great sale on nail polish at CVS, and I picked up a glitter coat, put it over my light blue. With its rainbow sparkles, it was perfect for the Fourth of July.

If we are focusing more on body-type stuff, I did just buy a peony facial serum, "happy" tea blend, sensitive skin bar soap from an herbalist. Anything that is a cottage industry I get excited about, and these are all pure garden and kitchen ingredients.

Also, I don't find it ridiculous that a bottle of pure rose essential oil is $200, while the same orange essential oil is $4. Working in body care, I learned why certain things cost that much. While I don't spend a lot of time learning mainstream salon products, there are certain natural shampoos, etc. that I would happily shell out a lot of money for. Even if I'm not at that income level, I am a fan. Just like a regular person buying an expensive concert ticket, I would buy a $50 shampoo without flinching.

I’m not sure that I have any “little luxuries”. I feel lots of things about my life are a luxury anyway? Like being able to have 35 pairs of shoes without any concern of not being able to afford them. I appreciate that I have worked hard for what I have but so have plenty of other people with way less.
I think what might have changed in recent years is more willingness to spend more on certain things I enjoy- cheeses is one, I still look for a small discount at the supermarket but will happily buy fancier brands than I once would have. It’s mostly food I think! Cheeses, yoghurt, berries, sometimes chocolate…the yummier items in these categories do give me a lot of pleasure.
We are also more willing to spend on a better quality of accommodation when we travel, and that gives a lot of pleasure on a holiday. If it can be a good price, yay, but for a short holiday I won’t worry. You mostly forget the price once you’re back home and it might have made the short holiday so much better.

Even when DH and I were poor students, quality bedding was not negotiable. DH and I have recently converted to euro-style bedding - using a bottom sheet and a down duvet with a cover we change instead of a top sheet. Long staple cotton percale - and I iron my sheets, duvet cover and pillowcases! Probably my most consistent luxury along with…

Cloth napkins! Sometimes a table cloth, sometimes a placemat. Always cloth napkins.

A massage with an RMT every 4 weeks or more frequently if I feel the need.

Really good small batch goods from local providers: chocolate, jams, honey, bread, etc.

I gifted myself a year with a personal trainer when I was in my early 50’s, and it was one of the best ‘presents’ ever - and felt like a real luxury, and also an investment in myself. I’m thinking of doing that again.

Irina: I always have a silk robe. Over the years I have had a vintage kimono and then a modern Chinese silk robe brought back by friends from travel. I currently have an RL robe that was my Christmas present. I like the light weight and feel of silk.

Freshly ground coffee in a favorite mug, hand made coffee grind hand soap for the kitchen, matching scent shower soap and lotion, hardback books, lovely cards for hand written correspondence, time and resources to thrift vintage prints for gallery walls throughout our house. Some of my favorite little luxuries.
Fun thread!
