Cute dress would love to see you in it. And yes this dress fits your litmus test.

As for me, my litmus test outfit would be just simple jeans, tees and ballet flats. Boring me, I know.

Thanks ladies.

Caro - you're right, they're clearer colours. And I suppose it is a bit girly. It's from the Lily Pulitzer era.

Thanks Sarah!

Thanks Lyn* - I was sort of thinking about the feeling that I associated with that dress. It just made me so happy to wear it, that I would like my other clothes to give me that care-free kind of feeling too!

I think that dress is "feminine" because of the print, and also "playful" ... I suppose it could be "boho" depending on the accessories and how you style it.

I think there are a lot of variables with one dress that it might be hard to "litmus test" everything - for example, I'm sure if I worked that dress into one of my outfits, it might look completely different than what you would do. So while the test would be able to tell you if the style could work for you, it wouldn't be able to tell you if the dress could be styled in other ways as well.

That dress does fit those adjectives so well. What a good idea to have a "litmus" test.

I think this dress fits all the adjectives except womanly (it's more girly imo) & spicy/earthy neutrals - they are clear colours that pop again imo.

I was getting some help from you ladies figuring out what my style priorities (after fit and comfort) were.

My list of adjectives is still a bit of a mix:
Flirty/feminine/womanly - could this all be summed up in ladylike?
Boho/50s/60s - Structured boho?
Spicy/earthy and neutrals
playful and fun
body skimming

Then I realised that this dress, while it was wearable (it is fraying now), was the absolute bomb and my favourite thing in all my wardrobe to wear. It seemed to work for so many occasions and may have been the biggest compliment magnet I have ever, or will ever, own!

This could be my litmus test for purchases- I can ask myself "Does this piece of clothing I am considering complete an outfit/is an outfit that is as fabulous as my old dress?"

Have you ever had a piece of clothing that served as a litmus test? What was it and did that work for you?

PS I am showing it on my dress makers dummy because I am still in my pajamas and I haven't even finished my coffee or washed my face! No photos of me in this state!! hehe
