I like the lip shimmers from Burt's Bees, too. There were coupons in the Sunday paper a couple of weeks ago, so I bet they will be on sale soon.

Okay, it sounds like the Burt's Bees has a large following. I have the medicated lip balm and I used to use their lip shimmer, which was nice but I think I lost it! I might need to just get a new one, but I can't remember what color I got for the life of me. Grr.

Anyway, if I can find something that ISN'T lipstick that works, it would be the best possible situation, so I'll check out some of the balms that have been recommended. I think I'll start with the Burt's Bees because I already use their products and like them. The lip shimmer is nice because the color I got was close to my lip color and not too sparkly and obnoxious. Just a little livening. I need to go see it in person and remember what color I got...

Maya, I actually have worn the Clinique Almost lipstick, and it varies from colour to colour. Some of them are more sheer and moisturizing, but a couple of the more opaque shades can be a bit drying. Overall though, I really liked the product. I haven't worn it in years though, so the formulas could have changed.

About chapped lips- I have tried *loads* of lipbalms over the years. I've tried Aquaphor in the past but it didn't do anything for me. My boyfriend is a Burt's Bees fan and I like it, but Kiehl's no. 1 is my all-time favourite balm. It also comes in two tinted versions, which add a hint of colour (one is a coolish pink, and one is a warmish red-orange). I find them to be super long-lasting and moisturizing.

I use the Burt's Bees with pomegranite oil, too. I'm going to look into some of these other products. I actually wouldn't mind a lipstick, but I am picky about what I put on my lips. I don't like petrolium products, so I think the Aquafor is out for me.
Maya- the Gayle Hayman one is the only one that it seems like it doesn't have to be reapplied frequently (according to the reviews), and it comes in sheer colors:

Maya, I second the reco for Burts Bees. I have tried SO many lip balms and chapsticks it isn't funny. Burt's Bees got me the best results. But in addition to this, and I discovered this by pure accident, exfoliating my lips with a moist washcloth seems to work wonders for my eternally chapped lips. After that, almost anything I dab on seems to stay put for a LOT longer through the day. I'm having to reapply one or two more times at the most.

This is the one I like:

http://www.burtsbees.com/natur.....e-oil.html

I've tried other kinds of Burt's Bees items, but this one is really good. It's a lip balm, in a chap-stick style container, but it seems to moisturize and stay on a bit better than other products, and there is a faint (very faint) hint of rosy colour. Not a gloss, and not a lipstick though - it's a lip balm. I like the stick applicator as opposed to a goopy pot of balm or gloss too, easy to throw in your purse or coat pocket.

You can get this at Target, the grocery store, various drugstores - just about anywhere. Even the local health food store will likely have it.

As for the Aquaphor, it comes in a little box of two tubes. It's texture is a little bit like Vaseline, but I'm pretty convinced on it's moisturizing properties, it's somehow "better" than Vaseline, though I can't explain why or how. The texture could be a tiny bit thinner than thick Vaseline. The nice thing about the mini-tubes of Aquaphor is that you can use it on your hands, your fingernails, your rough elbows or what have you. It's a great all-purpose product, which also happens to work well as a moisturizing lip balm.

Here's a link to what the box of two mini-tubes of Aquaphor looks like:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001I.....B001I90NEA

Again, it's pretty much available everywhere.

That said, I much prefer the Burt's Bees Replenishing Lip Balm with Pomegranate Oil for daytime. It's *pretty* (non-sparkly or goopy though) and it really does the job.

If I don't have the Burt's Bees handy - then a really good trick is to apply the Aquaphor to your lips while getting ready in the morning, and then apply some colour if you like. I guess the Aquaphor makes just about any lipstick or lip colour instantly moisturizing and lighter/more sheer in tint as well.

Actually - I like both of these products - I have both on hand all the time. Inexpensive too - which is nice.

I don't really have a lipgloss preference. I had a great Mac one that was not sticky at all. I think it's all trial and error with the glosses. I hate the sticky feeling too!

I really recommend giving Aquphor a try!

Renata, that sounds FABULOUS. I'm definitely going to look there. I always forget the Body Shop for some reason.

Michelle, where did you find the Burt's Bees stuff?! I haven't seen it anywhere unless it's the lip shimmer I linked to above.

Marianna, I'm getting sick of the sticky feeling of lip gloss, which sort of prompted me to give a sheer lipstick a try. What gloss do you use?

Juli, the Fresh Sugar sounds great but $22 is pretty steep for me!

Buttershine sounds like it might be good, but the reviews seem to say the color is bold. I will have to check it out in person.

Shiny, I guess I should rephrase: I don't mind a hint of color. It can look nice. I just don't like opaque lipsticks. They never, ever look natural to me. As long as no one can tell I'm wearing lipstick, I'm happy. That's why I was intrigued by the Almost Lipstick. It seems like it gives a tiny bit of color, but the color is based on your natural lip color.

VC, I'm trying to find the Burt's Bees product you're talking about and I dont think I can find it Is it this?

http://www.burtsbees.com/natur.....immer.html

I really like Burt's Bees medicated lip balm in terms of healing, I just wish it didn't need to be reapplied.

I haven't tried Aquaphor yet. I'm not optimistic but I'll try anything. I have been applying Caramex at night and using Burt's Bees during the day. Both of them are good products and very soothing/healing, but I just wish I didn't have to constantly reapply them.

Whenever I can haul myself off to Sephora, I think I'll give this a try:

http://www.sephora.com/browse/.....inate=true

I like that it's natural and has SPF protection, and the sheer color sounds good.

I second VC's recommendation of Aquaphor... my lips are addicted to that stuff. I started using it when I was on Accutane for acne years ago and have never looked back. I apply it on my lips before bed and whenever they're feeling chapped (always).

I've never been a lipstick girl either, so I always put gloss over the Aquaphor. It works for me.

I've never tried the specific Burt's Bees product that VC was recommending, but I can vouch for the amazing moisturizing power of pomegranate oil. That stuff is almost solely responsible for keeping my body from turning to a scaly mess in the winter. It's also quite gentle, so it likely wouldn't agrivate your sensitive lips.

I'd highly recommend using the small-ish trial sized tubes of Aquaphor at night time, will soften up your lips overnight. I keep a tube on my night table, and also have a tube in the bathroom - I apply the Aquaphor on my lips first thing in the morning while getting ready for the day. I live in Colorado - very, very dry here and stuff like this helps quite a bit. It softens up and moisturizes my lips before considering lipstick or other lip balm.

For daytime - Burt's Bees replenishing lip balm with pomegranate oil - it's quite a bit better than some of their other lip balms. There's a very slight rosy tone to this stuff, but it's not at all lipstick-y. Love this stuff!

In terms of lipstick - I haven't tried the Clinique yet, but have found that Lancome's Le Rouge Absolu is pretty nice - feels sort of 'barely there' and moisturizing on the lips. That said, I wouldn't call it 'sheer' exactly.

You know what? I'd highly recommend that Burt's Bees lip balm with the red cap - it's called 'replenishing' or something like that, and contains pomegranate oil. Way, way better than any of their other lip balms and gives a lot of moisturization as well as providing a very faint hint of colour. Not a gloss or lipstick at all, just a balm that has a faint tint to it.

I'm going to try the Buttershine as recommended by Boof - sounds pretty good, actually!

I've used Almost Lipstick, but my lips still dried out. My favorite is Clinique Buttershines Lipstick. It feels great (like lip balm) but provides really nice sheer color. You don't get the sticky feel that you get from gloss. I also use Aquaphor on my lips compulsively. Hope you find something that works for you!

Have you tried Sally Hanson?I don't know the name of the product I've been using - it comes with two tubes, one for day (supposed to go under your lipstick) and one for night. Check the drugstore.

Sally Hanson also makes a lip plumper which is amazing. Not that I need any lip plumping. DD and I gave it a whirl awhile ago, just for fun and curiosity. She looked like she'd had botox done! LOL. It's really moisturizing though... which is why I tried this newest product.

Otherwise, why not hunt down a lipstick that is the same color as your natural lips?

I have tried every kind of inexpensive lip balm conceivable and don't like any of them. I like Burt's Bees and Caramex (despite the nasty taste) the best, but I get sick of reapplying them and having my lips feel gooey, leaving a film on my cups, and getting fur all over my lips when I kiss my kitty. I wish someone would come up with a lip balm that was actually absorbed by your lips instead of just sitting on top.

I like regular Blistex for moisturizing. In the last year or 2 I bought the expensive lip balms at the makeup counter and I did not find any thing better than Blistex for me.
I have the Clinique Black Honey as was recomended by Angie on the blog a couple of years ago. It is a good neutral color but I don't find it moisturizing at all. I have to use a lip balm under or over it.

I loathe lipstick but the cold weather is coming and my thirsty lips are reminding me of all those times I have been advised to wear a moisturizing lipstick instead of my usual combination of lip balm and very sheer gloss. I don't know if this really works or not but I'm desperate. My lips get so dry they crack and bleed. The constant reapplication of balm and gloss works temporarily, but leaves them sticky.

The reason I don't like lipstick is because I just hate looking like I'm wearing ANY makeup, and lipstick always looks like makeup. I just want my own color, but smoother and a bit shinier, and I don't want to have to reapply it every three hours.

Does anyone use this? It sounds like it fits the bill in terms of coverage and moisture, but does it need to be reapplied frequently?
