An update, and a big thanks for all the suggestions!

So far, the Saucony trail runners and the Merrill Siren Q2's are in the lead, and I'm waiting on delivery of a pair of Brooks trail runners (in photo).

The Ahnus are cut too wide in the heel for me, as are, sadly, the Arcteryx approach shoes. I loved the look of the Arcteryx ones, but I could feel my heels slipping up out of them as I walked, which is a common problem for me and cuts down on my shoe options.

I tried the Scarpa Crux approach shoes (Finds bookmarklet will not work for me at the moment, but I've attached a photo), and they would have been good, but the tongue comes up too high on the foot and rubs my instep/front of my ankle.

I also tried some from The North Face, and they're overall too wide for me.

I could probably justify keeping both the Merrell light hikers and either the Saucony or Brooks trail runners. I get enough use out of this kind of shoe that it would relieve the beating I give my regular running shoes.

None of these are terribly fashion-y for travel around-town wear, but at least these particular styles are relatively low-key in styling (no shocking pink and fairly low-profile), so hopefully I won't look like a total dork out and about. :-D

Following with interest. I note that in most discussions of trail shoes, people do or don’t want higher cut boots because they do or don’t want ankle support. But nobody seems to mention snake and poison oak protection! These were the reasons I was taught to always wear boots and long pants. But come to think of it, I haven’t seen a snake in years- and I often think that others on the trail look more comfy in their shorts and sandals.....maybe I need to be less uptight.

I have had good luck in the past with Merrell "Siren Sport". There are a lot of variations, but this are the ones I've had. The look may be a little "busy", but I like the climbing shoe vibe.

I have these approach shoes (EVOLV Cruzer Psyche) and get compliments almost every time I wear them. Sleek and comfortable, they have VERY grippy soles and are good on smooth rock trails, flat gravel trails and walking around town. Because there's no ankle support, I would not wear on rocky trails.

Another bonus - soles are flat - which I like. If you need a lot of arch support these are not for you.

I own two pairs. One was comfy right out the box and the other needed a week or so of break-in time. Both are holding up well.

So the REI didn’t have any women’s approach shoes, but i did like some Brooks trail runners that I tried on. I have to order the colorway that I like though. Some Merrell lightweight hikers also felt good. North Face is too wide for me, apparently.

I ordered a couple of pairs from Zappos to try too. I’ll update later!

I continue to struggle with the look vs. comfort of these type of travel shoe and have had to choose comfort over looks. I was going to suggest going to REI and trying shoes on. The sales associates in the shoe department are very knowledgeable and will suggest brands based on your feedback. I was able to find two brands that work for my feet, Salomon and Ahnu. I don’t love the way they look but don’t hate them either. I do like the way they feel when I am on a multi day walking adventure. Also, since I am always a carryon only traveler, I have accepted the fact that I will be wearing them on the plane (because of size and weight) and looking unfashionable! I do pack nicer flats for the occasional nicer restaurant!

Well, if it’s a trail runner you are looking for, I’ll put a plug in for my Scarpa Hydrogen GTX trail runners. They are superlight, have a narrower fit (Scarpa is an Italian company), and are reasonably waterproof (Gortex liner). The sole flexes easily at the ball of foot but is firm underfoot which I find more comfortable on rocky terrain than the softer soles found on many NA trail shoes. The lugs are a standard 4mm and there is good lateral support so the shoe works well on slippery or uneven terrain.

To my eye, the toned down aesthetic of my Scarpas don’t scream trail runner so I’m fine with wearing them in town.

Gaylene, those are not bad at all, style wise, for SAS. I admit, I have some bias against them because SAS was my 80-year-old mom’s shoe store of choice. I know, I know, no retail stone unturned! They worked well for her because they fit a narrow foot well.

But I actually *don’t* have trail runners. I have regular Brooks running shoes, and Sportivo sturdy hiking boots, and both are perfect for their purposes, but I could really use something in between, and if it has the added bonus of being slightly more city-refined looking, that’s so much the better!

I think I’ll be able to get to REI in the next week, so that will be a good opportunity to check out options. I’m thinking of ordering some possibilities online to be delivered to that store, so I can be sure my size will be there.

If you already have the hiking boot/trail runner category covered and are looking for a more refined alternative for travel, you might find something from SAS which fits your requirements. Since Angie’s enthusiastic endorsement of this company, I’ve come out of the shadows regarding my ownership of SAS shoes for just that category.

I do a lot of walking (10-15 km most days) on city sidewalks, shale pathways, and wet surfaces. My hikers and trail runners come out to play when I hike on muddy and/or rocky mountain trails, but my SAS shoes nicely handle the rest of my walking needs. The bonus is that they allow me walk into a nice shop or restaurant without feeling out of place.

I currently own the “Mesh Tour “ and “Sporty” models and am seriously thinking of adding a boot style this fall. The trick with SAS is to find a colour and style which suits my aesthetic; these are not “cute” shoes but the fit and comfort are super. Might be worth a look, especially since even Angie is sporting the “Free Time” style these days.

I used to run in Saucony Peregrines, til I had a kid and my feet got too wide for them. They are good shoes -- I like that burgundy, nice retro sneaker vibe.

I'll also put in a plug for Lowa Boots. They make really beautiful trail shoes, including a fair number of low-cut styles. Some of their casual sneakers may also have enough tread for hiking. They are superb shoes (made in Slovakia), and really comfortable. They have a decent range of "all terrain sport" shoes, but I think the Renegade light hiker styles are their most popular.

Merril's work for me for all kinds of outdoor "gear" footwear, and I need to replace my hiking shoes, so reading this with interest.

ChrisM - happy to hear your Hoka One One recommendation. I had Hoka One One Arahi's recommended to me a year ago at a running gear store where they did serious shoe fitting, and together with a superfeet insole, my feet have been very happy on my daily walk/runs.Lightweight, nice colors, and well worth the price. I just replaced them after a year or wear. (I only do a mile or two a day). I'm thinking I want a waterproof trail runner next and will look at your suggestions. To hijack this thread for just a minute....you and I are "name" sisters - my first name is also Chris and my last name begins with M, and I have used the moniker "ChrisM" many times for logins and the like, although I chose not to use it here.

The boot and trail shoe versions of the Ahnu Montara are popular. I like the black (you're all shocked I'm sure) - they look almost like classic old leather hiking boots, to me, but a little sportier. I have the boot version and they're great on my blocky feet, but you might prefer something narrower.

I think they're up to the third iteration of this design, and I haven't tried the new Montara III - sometimes the fit can change quite a bit.

I like those Arc'teryx approach shoes!

I ordered the approach shoes you posted last summer and returned them immediately. The fit was so odd I thought they might be defective. I think that at least that pair was intended to be worn very snug by a wider, higher volume foot than my own. The design of approach shoes might be too technical for casual wear?

I would recommend scrolling through reputable outdoor supply stores like REI, Backcountry, Moosejaw, etc.

Take a look at Hoka One One. I just ordered some trail runners for hiking - yes, there are some funky colors, but some navy, gray black models too.

Super duper lightweight - I ordered the Stinson ATR4 to take on our upcoming vacay out west. The Speedgoat seems narrower but get fantastic reviews. I have the Clifton for walking - highly recommend!!!

Ah, LaP, I was just looking at some Ahnu -- see the find below. These Saucony runners get good marks on a hiking site for trail running/hiking, too. I thought the Merrells were a bit more on the streamlined side as well.

I meant to clarify too -- I definitely want a lower cut for these shoes. These are for less rugged terrain so I don't need ankle support.

I think in general light hiking boots look a little cuter than trail runners, but I do pretty much all of my hiking in trail runners, for comfort reasons, unless there's snow on the ground.

You might look at the Ahnu line by Teva. They offer low-cut and mid-cut options, in both leather and leather/mesh. I had a pair of the Montara boots for years and thought they were very comfortable and pretty cute.

For trail runners, I think New Balance's tend to be more low-key than others; they look more like plain old running shoes, just with more aggressive tread.

Thanks, Laurinda! When I've tried Keens in the past, they've been a little wide for me, but I'm taking note. Haven't tried them in a while. I'm hoping for something a little lighter and if possible a little more refined looking. I'm starting to look at "approach" shoes, which tend to be a bit of a hybrid hiking/climbing shoe so they're a little less stiff and lighter in weight and appearance. Since I already have heavy-duty hikers covered, the approach shoe might be a good solution.

Keen Voyageur, if they suit your foot width.

I'm on pair #3. They are the most comfortable, best supporting shoes I've ever worn (I have wide feet and high arches). They have good ventilation and are good hiking shoes on hot days. Not waterproof.

It seems REI & LLBean are no longer stocking this model, but they are available through Zappos.

Thinking of getting a more lightweight alternative to my clunky, rugged, ankle-covering hiking boots for our upcoming trip. Bonus points for anything that looks good enough to run around town as well, or shoes that also function as trail runners. I don't really want crazy colors, just something kind of neutral and as lightweight as possible.

My foot is slightly narrow, but a B/medium width usually works on me with socks.

Any suggestions?
