I totally remember ripping the heck out of my wide legs and flares in high school on my bike. A chain guard is a miracle cure! It's one reason I went for the more stodgy commuter style bike. I ride as a commuter!

Roberta, yes, my plan is to cut out the excess pocket fabric so it doesn't bunch up and then sew them shut. It's just risky for me to put things in the sewing pile, because it often takes me months to get around to those little chores.

The t-shirt is also Everlane -- from quite a few years ago!

I'm impressed by all of you biking in wide legs! I destroyed a beloved pair of corduroy flares in high school getting them caught in the chain, and ever since have pretty much only ridden in slim pants or something easy to roll up. I am, however, guilty of riding in open toe shoes, like, all the time... :D

I am really liking wide legs these days. That extra deep hem is also a super detail. I would just stitch those annoying pockets shut. Then they'll be a cute detail and you won't have to worry about them.
The other jeans look great on you too, no question of that. Specifically, I love that t-shirt you're wearing!

They both look really terrific on you, with wide legs particularly on trend right now and the perfect inseam length too. However, only you can truly assess whether you'd get enough wears from them to make them a worthwhile purchase in the end.

I think the wide legs look great on you. Buy 'em! As someone who owns several pairs of the barrel jeans and loves them, I'm right with you on those. I'd love to have them in a light blue, but the icy blue is too light for me, otherwise they'd be mine.

I like both jeans but understand the easiness of the second pair. I wear my black wide leg jeans to work and after - it works for Bay Area ( no bike rides for me ).

Another vote for both - I don't think the wide ones look dressy to be honest, but they do look great. Once you overcome the idea they are dressy (and possibly remove the pockets) they might become workhorses.

I do wear my wide legs on my bike, FWIW. For commuting. Mind you, my bike has a full chain guard and is a step-through style, so YMMV. And I'm a bit nuts, or Euro -- whichever you prefer. I don't go as far as wearing heels on my bike, like that woman you noticed on your trip, and for safety's sake, I stay away from sandals. But I will definitely wear a skirt or dress on my bike. As long as it is full enough.

I wear my wide legs for work-from-home, classroom teaching, walks, lunches/ appointments out, shopping --- basically, daily wear. Not for gardening or dirty outside jobs.

I've worn the barrel legs (but mine are off white) for all of those but also not gardening or getting down on the floor stuff.

Thanks everyone! Leaning towards keeping both, esp since the wide legs are a bit discounted (still pricey, but under $100 usd).

When I say dressy, I don’t mean “formal” — they’re still jeans of course, and light wash at that — but rather “fancier than the usual iteration”. Everlane even calls them fancy jeans! The barrel legs I will wear to work in gardens, build sets, bike commute, all the daily stuff. The Mariners, I won’t. Higher rise, longer inseam, extra fabric, more “structured”. They would come out for certain parties, arts gatherings, and indoor teaching gigs.

I cannot imagine what I would put in the little front pockets. A single credit card, if I’m not going to sit down? My key fob (three keys and a tick remover) is too bulky. My minimalist wallet is too bulky. They’re just… weird.

Re: stretch factor and sizing on the barrel jeans… When I bought the Rosewood twill pair several years ago, I tried them in my usual size, one size up, and one size down. The size up looked basically the same but would have needed the waist taken in (saggy crotch). The size down would probably have been fine after a day’s wear, but the waist sat a little higher than is my preference with this shorter-for-me rise (wedgie factor). So I went with my usual size and they are structured at the beginning of the day, relaxed at the end, which is all good. Basically, my impression is that the waist increases and decreases while the volume of the legs stays pretty similar across several sizes. I have big legs for my size (thank genetics plus all the hike and bike days) so barrel legs look like straight legs on me, and straight legs look like skinny legs.

They both look great on you, so I don't think you can go wrong, though it depends on just how annoying the pocket issue is. Is it tolerable given that fabulous wide-leg swoosh factor, or would it drive you nuts every time? But appearance-wise, they're both sublime.

I also tend to think like you regarding "dressy" jeans if I am going dressy I reach for a skirt or casual dress.

Of course I vote for both since I'm the happy owner of each style! I have had mine since March and have worn both (esp. the wide legs) a TON. I don't find those pockets in front a problem -- I just smooth them down when I put them on and they stay put. They do open up, so a person could use them, theoretically, I suppose, although I don't.

The barrel legs are fun. They do stretch out. Mind you, mine are in the twill, not the denim. I got a size down from my usual and still find them loose, but in a good way.

I wore the barrel legs in the twill most in late spring (esp. April/ May). I wore the wide legs most in March/ April. They are a heavier denim so will come out again in the fall. They are very sturdy, launder well, and have been an excellent purchase for me.

These two pairs of Everlane jeans came last week. I LOVE the barrel legs in the icy pale wash (#2). Super comfy, easy to wear. Haven’t done a direct comparison, but I think the fit is a bit more relaxed than the same size in cotton twill (I have them in Rosewood), or else they’ve tweaked the fit in the intervening years? Anyway, cute and comfy, hard-to-find color — definite keep!

On the fence about the wide legs (#1). They look GREAT, but the nonfunctional front pockets are super fussy (have to be un-bunched every time I put them on). I could remove them pretty easily, but will I get around to it? They are a bit dressy and I can tell it will take a while for them to rack up wears (I don’t do a lot of elevated jeans looks; almost always reach for a skirt or dress, or non-denim trousers, in those scenarios). But finding my inseam off the rack in a trouser jean? It’s hard to say no to that!
