I am one of the few here who has a fairly high tolerance for wear I can't keep white soles white and have kind of given up trying. I do try to keep leather clean but small scuffs don't bother me. I would actually hesitate at light suede because it seems like it would be harder to clean than leather. Now that I think about it I have some tan suede loafers that I worry about dirtying, even though I sprayed them before wearing.

This is why I go for premium bench made when I can afford it. Not just on light colored shoes, but those are the ones where the quality shows. I don’t need my shoes to look pristine. I want them to wear with distinction.

For superficial dirt marks, depending on the finish, I’ve had good results with acetone, but be sure to spot test first! Premium leather will absorb a coat of wax into the scuffs and buff up to a shine. Suede can be harder to care for, but not impossible. Quality is king

My best white shoes ever are a pair of Churches Burwood brogues. I have had them for years. Love them so much I had the leather soles completely replaced at great expense. They are a long way from bright white these days so I gave up on blanco a long time ago. I only use wax on them now. I think they look elegantly distressed.

It is frustrating when footwear gets scruffy before it "wears" out.....
four
My blush shoes currently need a touch up but it's minor and I think I can find a close enough polish. These black boot are such a soft leather that it is very frustrating as the toes are worn. I purchased them in 2019 and my estimate is about 50 -60 wears- I would expect more from boots.

I have had good success with light suedes Irina. There are special bars that you can use to rub off marks.

WOW, Irina! You are right! They look and feel just like suede though! The sticker on the shoe says it's leather too:

"This is the hide or skin from an animal that has been put through a process called tanning. There are many types of leather"

I think it's a typo on the site. These shoes are suede, IMO. Not synthetic.

I only allow scuffs on my gear. For my dressy outfits, no scuffs allowed. Today I wore very light oxfords. They’re actually a bright silver. If they were to get scuffed I would try to polish them somehow, and if that didn’t work I’d donate them.

Angie, the damage on my shoes is on the top layer of leather, it’s just scratched off. I thought of trying suede..
Thank you for posting your shoes! I’m with Jo and Sam, love them and I just ordered the same Mary Janes! We have similar low volume feet (mine are with bunions, bane of my existence). Hope they will feet. How do you find they fit? Also, I don’t have shoes with synthetic upper. Do you feel any difference with leather?

I've seen you wear red shoes, Irina! Maybe you'd like light grey too?

My 2 cents:

I wear white, cream, and blush shoes ALL THE TIME. My snow boots are cream too! In bad weather, and I walk almost everywhere. I spray them all first. I regularly wipe them down, clean them, wash laces in oxy-clean, wipe off scuff marks with acetone, and keep their vibe polished. I wear red, burgundy, gold, shocking pink, light blue, and citron shoes too. I don't wear dark shoes. I have a pair of tall navy dressy boots, but they seldom come out. I wish they were LIGHT!!!

I share the wear of my light shoes, so all pairs look pristine for longer.

I wear out the inside linings of my low top sneakers in two years - all ECCOs - and I pass them on. I have no problem doing that. I am hard on shoes, and that's that. My leather Converse last longer because they are hardier.

Cardiff girl, your comment on DH made me smile! :)

How interesting! I almost never wear sneakers in the summer. Before Covid, I wore them sparingly at all and they last me forever. I don’t remember wearing out a pair of sneakers before. I bought my first city sneakers in 2016 and still have them, downgraded for neighborhood walk. I mostly wear jeans now and don’t really like them with sneakers, too sporty?
Light color sandals would be an answer but it’s a very difficult task to find sandals that fit me. My preference for summer is simple flats.

I think it depends on your personal style aesthetic.l have quite a high tolerance for signs of wear(l did marry on older man!) but l can totally understand those that don’t paticularly if the rest of your look is very pristine.Mywhite footwear is wipeable so l haven’t had these problems as of yet but l would be very wary of light suede shoes and staining issues.

I don’t wear light-colored shoes for the most part, unless they’re sandals or sneakers, but I’ve had that scratched/gouged leather thing before, so I commiserate. Back when I wore pumps for work, it would drive me nuts when the backs of covered heels would get banged up, I think mostly from wear while I was driving. Nothing to be done as far as repair, so I wound up not spending a lot of money on those styles, and letting them go as soon as they looked scruffy.

Once my light-coloured shoes are scuffed (I polish my light-coloured shoes which gives them a protective coating), I say goodbye to them. Generally, I am able to get scuff marks off with polish as I check my light-coloured shoes after each wear and deal with scuff marks immediately.

One advantage of now wearing block heels and flat shoes is that I no longer get scuff marks on my heels - the tearing of leather on the heel from pavements was the bane of my office shoes and something that I refused to tolerate.

I don't wear dressy shoes at all in summer because I have no call for them --but I do wear light coloured sandals and sneakers, almost exclusively, all summer.

I somehow manage with those. But honestly, my high-rotation sandals last two seasons at most (some less-worn items can last longer) and the same is true for sneakers, which really only have one year if they are white, though I will often wear last year's white ones into the next year in more casual situations and buy a new pair for "better" wear. I've never really expected my daily sandals to last more than a season, though -- I'm tough on shoes, I walk a lot, and I usually get between 50-100 wears in one season from my most worn pairs -- what more can I ask?

I hope Angie weighs in because she wears light coloured footwear in all seasons and somehow keeps it pristine. I think she has two secrets, really:

1. Lots of shoes to rotate!
2. Donating as soon as they don't meet her standards.

nemosmom, no, nothing will help, maybe if a stain applied to make shoes darker but I don’t need another dark color shoes. The top layer of leather is gone in the scratched places. Like Jenni, I have low tolerance for worn out shoes.

Oh Irina I am sorry. I don’t tolerate less than pristine shoes for very long. A few months maybe, then the scuffing or whatever else gets to me and I donate. The saddest letting go ever was my cobalt patent boots after 111 wears- scuffs were unfixable and boots misshapen.

I’m one of those women whose shoes are mostly black. Practical but admittedly somewhat a boring choice. One of my goals in the recent years was to add more interesting shoes. Interesting to me, first of all, means other colors than black. I don’t want another dark color like brown or burgundy for summers, I’d rather wear black or navy. I love cream, light beige shoes for summer but I’m hard on my shoes and they last at the most, 2 seasons. I decided not no repair a pair of comfortable, nice shoes because they are scratched in the toes area. I bought shoes polish in a similar color but damage is still very visible. It makes me sad that I have to give up otherwise good pair of shoes.
What do you do? Ignore the scuff marks? Wear light shoes only occasionally? Have a lot of them in rotation to split wears? (Mine were the only pair of summer beige shoes).

I placed an order for a replacement pair but I have my doubts.
