Thanks everyone this helps!

Sveta & Jenava - both good plans! ;)

MaryK - maybe I should start doing that with the philosophy that I can't buy until I get something to purge that it will replace?! I like that idea!

Bella & Scarlet - you are right, I think that makes it MUCH easier!!

MNSara - Funny you say that as I'm doing something similar right now with some things to see if I still grab anything from in there.

Marley - I about spit my coffee on my screen when I read yours. I thought I was the only one that did that?! LOL!!

Kate - good point!

Jen & RoseandJoan - I need to work those ideas into my plan!

JUST DO IT is what I need to do!!!

I simply tell myself that I deserve better, the shoes are not worn because they are not right for my lifestyle or because they are too uncomfortable. I want my shoe wardrobe to be perfect.

I've had to become ruthless about this because my feet have just become high maintenance. If it doesn't fit, support, AND flatter, or fill a specific need, out it goes. Believe me it hurts even to chuck the 12 dollar target clearance flats, but the health and comfort of your feet is more important. It helped me to try each pair on, admit what specifically was wrong (ie fit, duplicate pair, no arch support, rubs wrong) and then give myself permission to chuck or donate it because I've learned that lesson.

I try buffalo exchange first, and if I can't sell them there I try ebay. I sold a pair of shoes for 99 cents on ebay once; only one person bid. But knowing that they aren't fab enough to sell for more helps me part with them. If practically nobody wants to wear what I'm already not wearing, I shouldn't keep trying to make them work.

It's always easier for me if I can find someone to give them too. If they are nice shoes maybe they work better on someone else's feet. If they are horrible stiff shoes that will never be comfortable on anyone just throw them away.

I just get sick of not having a nice selection of "real" shoes to pick from day after day. That motivates me to make room so I can add some carefully selected, very practical choices...Although I did buy this pair on NAS and I've only worn them a couple times but they are too new and cute to go anywhere yet! I'm sure I'll wear them once summer rolls around...next year...(-:

I (like those above) go very quickly and ruthlessly through my closet - throw my rejects into a bag and hand them to my husband and order him to remove them from the house ASAP! He usually complies (he's a good guy!) and takes them to one of our local thrift stores. And its done. I don't look back.
The reason that I give them to my husband and he takes it from there, is because I used to get to the thrift store with my bag(s) and then have 2nd thoughts and start pulling things out of the bags and putting them back in my car! (Kind of embarrassing - and NOT a good way to purge and make space for new/better shoes!)

I need to be in the right mood and then quick be ruthless before it passes. . .

I also have a holding area (in my daughter's closet - she is mostly moved out) where I stage things I am considering consigning. It is definitely easier if they have languished there for a month or two - unloved and unworn - to take them away.

Sometimes I think you just need to take a load to the consignment store and not be a perfectionist about their outcome. I have only felt relief when things are out of my closet and out of my car. . .

I donate anything that doesn't have special meaning or value to me. For taxes, I sometimes take a pic to refresh my memory come tax time. I find that quicker than making a list.

There have been threads over the past year as people struggle with this. I can't go looking right now, but you might search -- trying words like consign, donate, etc.

We talked a little bit about this today and decided that best way to get rid of such items is to pass them on to someone that you know will make good use of them.

Always a problem, isn't it? I have to be pretty ruthless because I have VERY limited closet space, so I have a "one in, one out" rule for the most part. If I bring in a new pair of shoes, I look in my shoe closet and try to find a pair to let go. I have no problem just donating -- I keep track and take the tax write-off. I tell myself it nets me almost as much as consigning without the hassle.

I find it all rather freeing, actually. I did a big shop today and I have three big bags of stuff to be donated tomorrow.

For me letting go of shoes I never wear is an excuse to buy a new pair which I love and going to wear. It is an incentive! I just donate them as I do not want to bother with the consignment...

How do you let go of those shoes you never wear? You know the one's you either used to love, or still love but picked up the wrong size in, or the one's you paid a song for but just never wear? How do you just let go? I know I'd only get $3-$10 probably @ consignment. There's always donations....It's the 80% in the closet that don't get worn, how do you let go?
