sorry its taken me so long to get back to this post, i've been super busy and distracted by work. (how dare work get in the way!)….
lisp -- i've been super attracted to the stan smiths, but i was thinking that for fall white wouldn't be right (i have white cons for spring/summer and early fall). but you have given me another option to think about….

I agree with lisap that pristine Stan Smiths with the right outfit can look very cool to me in a minimalist/chic way.

Ha yeah, the yellow and black Tigers were first worn by Bruce Lee and then Uma Thurman wore them as a homage in Kill Bill.

I'm looking for the right pair of adidas Stan Smiths. Pure white if I can find. Green accent is ok too. They look ultra cool with a beautiful fine wool trouser, and with the ubiquitous BF jean.

I also have my eye on the Vince black croc embossed slip-ons but the price! They feel great on though and are nice and narrow on the foot. The Steve Madden knock-off might be my alternative. Slip-on vs laced? Two different animals to me. Like both.

I'm not a personal fan of the super-coloured hipster New Balance look but that's just me. My eye is drawn to the New England old-money look of the leather sneaker in a plain colour. Of course this may all just be some crazy vision I have taken from blogs and magazines and hope to make mine

I have a few pair of Nike Frees in plain black and a black/white abstracty print that are great with cropped leggings, shorts etc.

Rabbit -- i love all of the pairs you posted! and i totally get the Nike thing!
Viva, i totally hear you. i don't want to be the left behind " working girl".

my 1st thought on the new balance was to do red, but then i started to talk myself into the safe navy or black. but after reading the comments, i'm back to red......or the fab yellow and black pair rabbit attached!

If I were customizing, I'd go for a bold or bright color that works well with your wardrobe, or a shiny metallic. Something that makes a clear statement that this is a fashion choice, not a workout shoe. That was my strategy when buying the turquoise Nikes at NAS (can't find them online now, but pics are below).

I like my Cons in the cooler months with narrow-legged jeans. They always feel like they make my feet look too big and ungainly in shorts or capris, I guess because of the high vamp and white toe. I much prefer my slip-on sneakers for shorts, etc.

I have been struggling with the lace-up athletic sneaker trend. As an observer, I absolutely love it. I love it on men and women with suits -- especially the bright retros like Rabbit has posted. Fabulous and fun. Very urban cool. And I have seriously contemplated getting the New Balance ones from JCrew that you posted, which seem to have a nice hybrid of retro look and sleeker modern coloring.

But, I really worry that, for me, this would totally bomb .... sort of like I have to have my short hair cut just so, or I look matronly. I worry that this trend on me would just look 80s commuter instead of 2014 modern. (I don't really get Normcore, but I think on me this look could fall into un-ironic normcore. I think.) So, I ordered the black Vince slipons which have a clearer modern sensibility.

If you think you can pull it off, I would definitely try it. I really love the look when it works. Either bright or black/charcoal. Personally, I am not drawn to white/light gray. Too bland, not enough statement.

I'm loving that this is a trend right now as hipster lace up sneakers have been my go to shoes for years, the kind of brands carried in this nearby shoecandy store: http://theshoestorepdx.com/

So some of the brands that are popular among this group are the retro or classic styles of New Balance, Onitsuka Tigers, Saucony, Adidas, Puma, Reebok and Gola for example. They are lace up, often bright colors (if you aren't doing a pure white Adidas for example), but a sleeker fit.

Personally slip on doesn't fit me as well, although I keep trying them on just to see. I think they can work really well as a part of certain outfits, often a more subtle part.

I prefer the detail and cheekiness of lace up sneakers (and the comfort) for outfits where I want to the shoes to shine. I think classic neutral colors can work well, but also retro combinations of brights are fun.

I added a lot of examples, but really there is every color under the sun. I don't think matching is necessarily the goal when wearing them.

ETA: I'm personally conflicted about wearing Nike. I think I could picture people wearing them for fashion, but not to be hip (if that makes sense). It might be because they are based where I live and sort of still considered 'the man', in other words mainstream but not classic or retro. It's so silly I know, feel free to disregard my rambling.

I think you have made some great choices. I really like slip on style sneaks because you know they are just easy peasy to slip on. The lace ups are a PITA when you are especially shopping and want to try on anything :D. At least that's my issue! Wonder why I have 3 lace ups and no slip ons!

If I custom chose a color for my sneaks it would be metallic anything. Gold/silver/pewter. Do they even do those colors? (The new balance link doesn't work for me)

to my surprise, i'm loving the sporty luxe trend. and i'm thinking about how to work this trend into fall.
i love the converse with shorts, capri's, BF jeans look for spring/summer. and i bought a great pair of slip ons that i've worn all spring as well. so i bought the black vince slip ons during NAS, but.....i'm not sure this is what i want. as i looked thru Angie's sneaker style pinterest board, http://www.pinterest.com/youlookfab/sneaker-style/

the styles that i'm more drawn to are truer athletic shoes, but not really shoes you'd work out it. so now i'm looking for that type of shoe. i've found this new balance shoe,

https://www.newbalance.com/US5.....tms_mk_667

that you can customize. and i'm thinking about it. or there are these nikes.
so, a couple of questions.... what do you think about lace up vs slip on for fall? any other lace ups you have seen that you think are a good fall sneaker? if you were customizing what color would you pick?
