So it wasn't gel. I had the polish removed today and she used pure acetone she said. Came right off! Man my legs looked ashy after she used it though :/

I get a manicure about twice a year. If I lived in an urban centre, I would go more often. These days I keep my nails short and bare. Once in a while, I will apply a light polish.

When I was working, I got my nails done weekly. I usually kept them bare for work. Polish was frowned upon in the hospital.

I use Jin Soon brand polish. I redo the polish once a week, mostly because I like to keep my nails short, the polish, once dry does not seem to chip on my hands. It resembles gel polish when dry especially if you use their top coat. I love their hyper repair base. Sometimes it’s the only layer I use. Their products are10 free.

Before the pandemic I had pedicures monthly. I love the look of polished toenails with sandals. My person retired, and I haven’t sought out a new person. This last summer I noticed my feet looked a lot worse, but I didn’t worry as much working in the garden. I’ve never done fingernails. I have a problem with my nails breaking, so maybe I should.

Interesting thread. I am on the low maintenance team but every so often wish I was better at having pretty nails. I buff once in a while but polish very seldom because I hate chips and as soon as that starts then off it comes. A long wearing one could be nice though. I've never tried the gel because the removal process seems intimidating. The Dazzle Dry is tempting. Off to check out Olive+June too.

Janet, the one Dazzle Dry mani I had (at a salon) did use all those steps. I would imagine all the steps are needed to get the longevity. However the polish dries much faster than other brands so it's less time consuming.

Helena, I’m curious about the nail wraps and wonder what the brand is called.

Re: Dazzle Dry — is it necessary to use all of their products to get good results? I notice that it’s a full line of base coat, color, top coat, etc.

I’ve also been intrigued with Olive + June — their social media marketing game is strong, LOL.

I am my usual low-cost, low-maintenance self with regards to nails. I don’t feel fingernail polish is good in my job so I mostly do toes, they last better. But then I prefer them to match my sandals and outfits so it doesn’t get done very often!
I have a Christmas do tomorrow evening though and have today off so maybe should do some red toenails!
I like OPI, Maybelline, and an Aussie brand called ChiChi.

The home manicure for me.
The drugstore brands (Sally Hansen, OPI, Essie) all have gel polish lines.
Apply color first (I use a base coat first then color), then there is a top coat that dries to a gel finish. Easy on, easy off with acetone remover. No soaking or scrubbing.
I have also used the nail polish stickers.
They are fun because you can buy them in cool nail art patterns. Easy to apply, even with short nails. Not artificial nails, just nail polish. So remove with regular nail polish remover.
Lastly there are those polish lines like Essies Treat, Love, Color. Easy on the nails. Good coverage and no base coat needed.

Another Olive & June fan here! Lasts a pretty long time especially if you follow their tips, and a reasonably clean formula too. The other brand I discovered over the past two years that I really like is Static Nails. Unconventional colour palettes, pretty clean ingredients, and good staying power. I’ve never liked going to get manis/pedis, but home nail care became a hobby for me during the pandemic, and fun colours incentivize the maintenance routine for me.

I was wondering if someone was going to chime in on Olive & June! They were a pandemic discovery for me and I have started doing my own nails once a week. I used to barely bother because polish would chip after a few days, but this lasts pretty much until I take it off, usually a week later, because I, too, hate the grow-out gap. I will mention that a friend borrowed a polish from me and didn't find that it lasted for her, so, a: try one or two colors before you jump in, and b: maybe add the top coat, which really enhances the long wear. (I also usually add some fresh top coat 3 to 4 days in.)

elpgal, my cousin sells one of the popular stick-on nail polish brands, so I tried a few just to be supportive - and they are actually fantastic! They last longer than a regular polish (esp. if you use a regular top coat) but don't do the damage that shellac does when removing. I don't use them regularly because it takes so long to ship from her (she's in Idaho; I'm on southern Ontario) and I'm just not that organized to plan my manicures in advance ha ... but if I had a more convenient way of getting them, I'd use them.

Has anyone tried Vinylux? I had a mani/pedi recently where the manicurist recommended it - the mani lasted a full week with no chips (and I am hard on my hands); the pedi I eventually had to remove because of re-growth and it didn't chip at all. And again you remove like regular polish, so doesn't do the shellac damage.

My nails are not well groomed. Well I keep them short (and they grow fast!) and clean but am a disaster at filing or buffing them.

I’m dying over here . I didn’t have time to do a manicure before my lunch date today and as a result , had to look at my ratty little nails with their super dry cuticles - all afternoon . Hangs head in shame .

Chris, I didn't have a lot of room either as I like my nails VERY short. But she made a tip that was slightly too big for my super short nails at the start, and by the time it had grown out for a week, it was about right. It worked for me.

I rarely paint my fingernails these days as they don’t last long enough before chipping etc. I file and shape, and sometimes apply a clear coat. I’m yet to do my toenails this season as our spring and summer has been cool and wet and rarely sandal friendly. I will do a splash of colour when things warm up! I like good old Revlon or OPI polishes.

DonnaF, what a great solution to your bedsheet texturization problem!! I do take an Emory board to the tips but sometimes that makes things even more jagged.

lisa p I KNEW you'd have some great inputs! I can only imagine the time and $$ involved in constant gel manis but I bet they looked good.
Interesting that your regular manis only last 4 days. Dazzle Dry's HQ seems to be in Arizona. Their web site says they ship outside the US but you have to call to ask how it works. I just stumbled onto the brand because my primary salon carried it.

Janet - yeah I'm with you, just thinking I might try doing it more often for a while and see what I think.

suntiger - if your salon had used gel on your toes you would have had to put your feet into the UV light thing which you might remember.

Runcarla I'm jealous of the longevity of your manicures. You must have a slower growth rate than I do. Or some other magic power. :-)

Rachy, I bet your nails looked great with that regime. The biggest PITA is how much time and work it takes to get the gel polish off.

elpgal I used a version of those stick on films once for a Halloween party maybe 25 years ago. My costume was a sexy vampire, with super pale foundation, bright red lips, and Lee press on nails in fire engine red.
The nails cost abut $5, were super long and I didn't cut them. They stayed on really well, and I got SO many compliments on my manicure at that party, mostly from guys! Of course trips to the loo were another matter. I bet today's versions are better.

kkards acrylics do look great but I've always stayed away because I've heard they can be very bad for your nails and can cause long term damage.

CarolS I have a neighbor who does the gel French tip routine, and you're right that the grow out line is less visible with a very light color. When my nails are as short as I like there is no real room for that white tip. I totally agree with "left to one's own devices, hands are what they are". Not necessarily a bad thing!

SF - yes there do seem to be a lot of newer brands.

UmmLila interesting about Olive & June. The stick on gels are a pretty low investment in time and $$ to see if you like them ... at least they were 25 years ago.

Sal, it's a good think to give nails a break. My regular summer pedicurist told me I should take a break from pedis over the winter because my toenails were so dry.

I used to get gel polishes but have stopped as I resented the time spent and commitment. I can’t maintain fingernail polish well - I am not careful.

This year I have been having podiatrist pedicures and not painting toes either. But plan to paint over summer.

I've been wondering about the stick-on nails, myself.

I started using Olive & June polishes last year. I'll buy a seasonal set of six with various manicuring supplies. By no means do they last like gel nails, but I find them to have a pretty decent wear period.
