Thanks for the update, Coffeegirl! I really like the look of all three dickies, but if it does not have the crisp feel you're looking for, then returning is the right thing to do. Can you get a full size shirt at Goodwill's or a thrift store? Then you could experiment without spending too much. I've had success making dickies from thrift pieces in the past. Not sure where I've stored them now. Must have a search tomorrow.

Nice idea! I always love this look, but the size of my arms relative to the rest of my torso makes it tricky to layer sleeved items.

I think they could work but don't think I would wear one. Somehow seems less comfortable than a blouse but I know many people don't like the feel of blouse sleeves under sweaters. I saw many crisp white versions at COS this weekend with different collar shapes.

You know, I'm with Sisi and English IS my first language! I had never heard of dickies until this year on the forum. I would run too hot to do this.

I have a sweater from Joie with a fake collar and I love it -- I have a couple of Veronica Beard jackets with zippered dickie sweaters which are interesting.
I'd love to find dickies that work!

Donna, I am sure you could do a DIY version. Back in the days of Dickies, removable cuffs were also popular. Often they would snap in, but fashion tape may also work. It was common to make a Dickie with the buttons down the front to wear with V-neck sweaters.

I wonder if one could make them by buying a shirt or blouse from a charity shop like Goodwill, and then doing a hack? I would make them large enough to tuck under bra straps so as to anchor them in place.

Because I can overheat unpredictably I always layer with things I can remove and reveal so this wouldn't work for me. I used to buy the plainest version of everything so I relied on layering to create interest. I've been trying to buy the more interesting version recently and have found that things with a little detail can actually be just as versatile.
The practicality of the concept is nice though, getting that crisp effect and only washing those little pieces.

One of my favorite purchases from this past fall was a Tommy Hilfiger gray crewneck sweater with a removable crisp white dickie - it's a softer rounded collar, not quite Peter Pan but in that vein. I love it - and it had me contemplating buying additional ones because I love the layered look without the bulk.

I actually saw one at COS this spring and regretted not buying it.

Do share how your purchase works out, I may follow suit!

I have a friend that wears them flawlessly. Like you, she runs hot and the dickie serves the purpose of adding interest while allowing her to remain somewhat cool. I certainly think they are worth a try, but as Joy suggested, try it out at home first to make sure it stays put.

I agree with Joy, it would look like a blouse/shirt, so I do not see anything wrong with it. Unfortunately I have no recommendations because I do not use "dickies" (interesting new addition to my English vocabulary )

I grew up with dickies. They saved on washing and ironing of a whole shirt. I doubt anyone would know that you are not wearing a shirt or blouse under your sweater. The problem I remember is that some did not stay put when worn during the day. Try it around the house first so that no one is telling you, " your Dickie is out."

I don't care for a lot of layers because I run warm but I still like the look of a collar peeking out from under a crewneck dress or sweater. A dickie might solve the problem as it's basically a collar and flaps. For reference: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw//.....dp_summary

My questions are: 1) is this a tacky look? 2) does anyone else on the forum use them? And if so, 3) any recommendations on brand?

I've ordered a cheapie from Amazon to try and will report back with photos if it's not too horrible, but in the meantime I'd love to hear from you all on your impressions!
.
.
.
UPDATE: Ok, so the dickies arrived and I am...less than wowed. I purchased a polka dot, white embossed, and dark denim.

Couple of thoughts. The quality is about what you'd expect from an Amazon item but I think for something like this it's not terrible, as the cheap fabric isn't going to be up against you like a trash bag all day. For those that are plus sized, these are definitely sized for misses. The denim was the most forgiving of the bunch.

In all, I was hoping for something a bit more crisp which the polka dot and white options don't provide, so those two will go back. I am going to play around with the denim a bit more and see if I'd actually use it. Denim can be tough in business looks. I'm also going to search Etsy and chat with my seamstress mother about possibly cutting down a full sized shirt as some of you wisely suggested!

I hope this was a helpful rundown of my little experiment! Thanks, everyone, for your comments and helpful thoughts!
