Just to comment on the using brown to bookend brown hair: I think dark on the bottom to bookend dark on the top is the idea. Maybe brown works for you, maybe it doesn't. (When my hair was still mostly brown, I discovered that wearing brown on the top actually made my hair look greenish by contrast, so I was awfully happy when earth toned everything went away, and happily stuck to black for my shoe capsule.)

If you want to know if brown would work as a complement to your mostly cool toned wardrobe, I would suggest you start with a relatively inexpensive brown (or cognac) belt instead. If it makes your outfits sing, you would love the boots too. If you find you just never reach for it, you wouldn't get much use from the boots either.

Interesting thread, I like all your bootie selections although I'd keep searching for a dark red in the shape that you like. With calf-hair like your leopard booties, I really like the look, but it wears off quickly in my experience if there is anywhere it rubs -- so I'm now trying not to buy it at higher price points if I can avoid it.

With the cognac booties they could work on their own with dresses or skirts, and/or could look great with a cognac belt or bag in outfits with pants -- that's what I generally do with my espresso brown book-ending booties -- coordinate with the belt and bag.

I like Suz's bootie list in terms of injecting variety and fun into this part of the wardrobe. My list would be more in terms of booties as outfit completers, so I have:

A rate/tomboy black bootie - good with leather jackets/distressed jeans

A more feminine/classic black flat bootie - pairs well with with leggings/skirts/dresses

A dark espresso brown bootie - bookends hair - great for tonal looks with other winter/fall darks like cobalt/violet, burgandy, navy, hunter green or eggplant, although I'd love one of these colors in a bootie too.)

A taupe/gray bootie - great for tonal looks with lighter shades (but I really want an even lighter one too, an off-white or pearl gray)

A dressy heeled black bootie - works well with midi skirts, but not as comfortable for all day wear as the flat versions.

A gear bootie for snow and mud

I'd love an animal print/patterned bootie too just to add pop to solid neutral outfits.

Frannieb, you are absolutely correct -- I forgot one whole category, which is kind of funny because it's currently the category I'm searching for!!

I also bought the Sweetie boot as a sort of crossover boot/ bootie for poor weather. I also have snow boots (true snow boots) and knee high dressy and slightly less dressy boots as well.

But there are times (a lot of times) when the weather is lousy, and you don't want to wear knee high boots or even moto boots. So, one item I am really in need of right now is a shorter more casual, more rugged bootie for weekends and mucky weather. I'm definitely on the search for that!

Suz your "rules" are indeed helpful - I'm making notes too. My boot collection is random and allover the place. I'm interested in a animal print but haven't anything I like yet. Also "need" a bookending colour . Thanks frannieb for leading us all through this!

Such a helpful thread! I may have to print out Suz's bootie rules. By this description I definitely have two pairs to buy this year: basic and colored. Clarification is SO helpful.

Can't wait to see which you choose. I have been eyeing the SW. Please post pics if you try those!

Suz - That is a wonderful way to think about building my bootie collection

1. Basic bootie - check they might not seem like it but the black fringe booties go with everything. I am not one to wear a shoe day after day but they ended up being so crazy versatile.

2. Colored bootie - Nope - don't have (The blue SW could fill this hole)

3. Animal print bootie - Nope - don't have (The animal print I picked could fill this one). I have a pair of leopard print danskos that I wear the heck out of as a casual shoe - I should use this experience to help me select the animal bootie

4. Bookending bootie - Nope don't have - I'm thinking that I will hold off on getting this color bootie for a while - Maybe brown maybe not - Those Prada would be a great christmas gift from hubbie - I feel before investing in a boot like that - that I should do some more work on my style and figuring out when I would wear them and actually have moments were I feel "Wow" i could really use a brown boot. I'm sure YLF will get me there.

5. Wild card bootie - filled by the off white booties for me

6. and I would add - a workhorse rain/snow bootie - This year the aquatalia sweetie and I already know I will add another pair next year in a little shorter style. Hopefully the NAS will have another one I like.

I think I have just had a epiphany and this is what workhorse bootie capsule is all about. I have a shopping list and something to wait for.

First off, you are building a great collection. (Waving at my Sweetie twin!)

I also wear booties for about half the year, seriously. And my wardrobe is cool toned. And here is what I have discovered works really well for me.

1. One BASIC bootie. Mine's an almond toe (almost pointed) Stuart Weitzman chelsea boot. Oh, I love the simple lines of these, and they are black. Simple, but works with almost anything.

2. One coloured bootie. For me, this is the Munro Robyn, in a cranberry colour. It works well with skirts as well as with pants because of the V shaped vamp.

3. One animal print bootie. At the moment, I have the SE Pettys in a python print that harmonizes well with grey, black, taupe, white, cream, and navy, or of course denim.

4. One "bookending" bootie. For me, that is taupe. I have an older pair of Reports -- they are not ideal and I need to upgrade to a sleeker bootie as soon as I can find it.

5. One "wild card" bootie. I got a pair of ink blue neoprene topped Zara pointy toed booties last year that were my most worn item.

I also own a "dressy" bootie (more like a shootie) in bronze, with a narrower heel.

And I would LOVE to add a leopard print one. I would wear the heck out of that.

So -- this is my system. I think once you have "basic" or "core" and "bookending" covered, you can go crazy!

But note -- "bookending" isn't always literal. My blonde hair "bookends" with taupe, grey, leopard, phython. And cream (if I could find it). It would even harmonize all right with cognac.

So just because your hair is dark brown doesn't mean you have to have dark brown boots. In your case, any dark boot is going to go the job.

Frannie, my wardrobe colors are similar to yours: black, grey, white, navy - all cool colors. I don't have a need for brown boots, but there's a pair I really love (sigh). Maybe brown boots for when you are wearing navy and denim? That question is directed to you AND me.

Leopard booties can be real workhorses. I have a pair and the pretty much go with everything! Red is very on trend and can add interest to an outfit. I am looking for red ones, myself. But I don't care for those red ones, I like the look of the more streamlined ones (#7).

I also think you have made great choices on the ones you own. Are you a brunette? Perhaps a brown would be a good choice...bookending and all that jazz. The Prada's are beautiful but twice the price of your Aquatalia's....if you are spending so much it may be wise to buy something classic that you'll enjoy wearing for many years to come and that will wear very well. You have chosen less expensive leopard and red booties which is smart as they are probably more of a trend. Like you, I am generally not a round toe fan but I do find they work occasionally.

I'm not a big fan of a rounded toe, either. I like a sort of almond shape better. I, too, like the first three that you already own very much. The brown booties with some black on them could certainly be worn with black or black and white. I wear a lot of brown and black and like to pair a brown boots with black clothes and vice versa.

Agreeing with Tanya: that the three booties you already own are fab.
If I hated the rounded toe, no matter how wonderful the color, I would continue searching. You must have seen Angie's post on dark reds and cognac :
http://youlookfab.com/2014/08/.....d-booties/
http://youlookfab.com/2014/07/.....c-accents/

The first three pairs, that you already have are gorgeous!

If I were to add two from the remaining four, I would definitely go for the navy SW (#4) and cognac Pradas (#6), as they are both stunning! Angie has recently posted a lot of ensembles featuring those cognac booties or similar pair, so there are lots of ideas on how to wear them. They are very versatile and would go with almost everything.

Inspired by Alana's post on booties
So last year I accidently discovered the love of the bootie after finally accepting tall boots just don't look good on my calves. Maybe they do but i don't like how they look.
I want to round out my bootie collection - My style currently is completely evolving as I am editing my closet away. I wear skirts and pants with a topper.
Picture 1: black fringe bootie - the bootie that started bootie love - bought in late spring and wore everyday for a month didn't matter what I had on I just loved them that much.
Picture 2: off white cut out (not my bootie by similar enough) - 2nd bootie I bought in Paris. loved the concept of them and still trying to figure out how to wear.
Picture 3: aquatalia sweete from NAS - Cold weather boot I just bought (can't believe I spent this much on a boot) they are divine and will get lots of use in heavy winter as the boots I wear to work and then change into booties.
Pictures - 4, 5, 6 and 7 boots I have collected -
4 - like everything about them
5- like the color hate the rounded toe
6- like the color but how do you wear brown boots - isn't that such a silly question - i think I ask because my base colors are black, gray and navy with some white. I feel I should have brown boots to bookend my hair - but maybe I don't understand that concept correctly.
7 - I'm sort of obsessed with the concept of a leopard shoe or bootie and this is the first style I have found that sings to me.

So if you were to add two more booties for the winter what would you go with
another black, a pair of brown, a pair of red - All ideas and suggestions welcome
