I also carry my indoor shoes to work... it sucks when your nice shoes get wrecked by salt. And when your feet get wet.

I bought the Baggallini Elena tote last year to take as a carry on bag and have found it is also great for work. It's light, can take some abuse, and has lots of room for shoes/lunch:
http://www.ebags.com/product/b.....ote/242552

Most days, though, I tuck shoes and lunch and whatnot in my Kate Spade Beau tote. It's not as light or convenient as the Baggallini, but it looks much nicer sitting on my desk. :)

i recommend anything from mz wallace….expensive but these bags are built to last and designed by a women so they work. i have the jane (1st find) and its amazing how much it holds, when i use it, i use it as both a handbag and a tote, one less thing to carry. if you go to the mz wallace site, they had excellent dimensions and details by bag on the numerous pockets.

It's true, the Longchamps bags are the best... but I like a bag that I can put over my shoulder if I need to, if its too heavy or my hands are full. There are so many great tote bags on sale online right now, its hard to decide. I would recommend a bag that isn't too fussy-- one you can close if you need to, but its easy to get in and out of...

I would vote against a Longchamp bag. Mine developed small holes in the bottom within a month of use and apparently, as I later discovered, this was a complaint by others.
What about a Baggu tote?

Oh yes. Carrying two to three bags is practical and on trend. I don't have any suggestions Thistle, other than that a lightweight tote bag in a neutral colour is what I would use in your situation.

For those times and situations where I might as well be a commuter (or a sherpa porter), I'm now a backpack convert. Makes me wonder why I waited so long to get one . I have a black faux leather Moleskine pack with a moulded bottom that keeps it upright on the floor and is also completely wipeable. Now that said, the very first time I used it, I forgot to zip it shut all the way (I never close my purse ,either, duh) and a brand new expensive hand cream (this is why I can never have nice things, says my mother...) fell out. Never make that mistake again

My commute is fairly long (1:15 door to door at worst, :45 at best) and involves walking to a bus stop which takes me to a train which I take into the city and then walk a few more blocks to work. As you can imagine, I carry shoes almost every day - mostly because with the amount of walking I do, even if the weather is fair, I don't want to wear out my "good" shoes. Or, or course, because I'm not going to walk a mile in heels haha!

But to the question at hand - I have either a backpack (of which I would really like a nicer one, preferably black leather) or a canvas non-disposable grocery bag. Not very stylish at all. I do also keep a pair of black flats at work all the time for 2 reasons - in case I ever forget to bring shoes, and/or in case one day I can't wear heels any longer.

Yes, corners wear out on La Pliage, but it's nothing a little duct tape won't fix. Reinforce it when you buy it and it lasts twice as long.

I do a fair bit of my commute on foot so wear flats in and swap to pumps ag work.

All our desks at work are 'hot desked' so I have a locker rather than desk drawers but I keep about 4 pairs there. If I want something different I put that in my (large) structured tote. However I carry a separate lunch bag (on a shoulder/cross body strap) to keep the tote slightly less loaded so I can do this. Plus nog carrying pumping gear.

In your situation I'd be tempted to grab one of the nylon 'le pilage' bags in a fun colour or one of my key neutrals and rock that as my second bag.

I actually think MZ Wallace makes better nylon bags than Longchamp but they are twice the price. I don't have one of their totes, but I do have a hobo and a crossbody. I like this tote that I've linked below.

I like my Longchamp (note my earlier find goes to the sold out version I have which is called Planetes, and the new version (purple one in the finds below) is called Le Pliage Neo; the regular le Pliage has brown handles and is slightly lighter nylon) but all the pliages have an issue with the corners wearing out. I'm told that they will repair this if you take it to one of their stores though.

The MZ Wallaces have feet and I've not had an issue with the corners wearing down on either of mine.

Fellow Wisconsinite here, so I definitely understand your dilemma. I too used to use plastic shopping bags (so plentiful, so practical), but last year finally upgraded to a leather tote that I found at TJ Maxx. Not terribly pricey (maybe $50?), so I don't worry too much about getting winter slop on it, just wipe it down and carry on. Bright blue in color, so adds some welcome cheer during our endless winters, and big enough to hold papers, shoes, lunch, wallet, and other odds and ends. I don't often haul my laptop home, but when I do, I use a separate bag for that. Good luck finding a bag that suits your needs and hopefully makes you smile every time you tote it!

I would love to hear of a tote with amazing compartments. I have a new job as a substitute teacher and I have to take so much stuff with me to school that I am currently using a rolling suitcase! A small one though. Fits gym shoes, binders, books, office supplies, prizes, lunch.

I know leather would be more luxurious, but I like the idea of a lighter weight, more weatherproof synthetic zip bag--trying to find ones that combine style with function. Sporty luxe (which could end up being quite luxe) instead of high-end supple leather tote typical for carrying office items. Color seems like it should be winter-brightening. but if you have a bright coat or different colors of coats, you may want a light neutral / metallic.

I have been guilty of carrying my shoes in a plastic grocery bag, too! I carry a ( sizeable) handbag every day plus a tote with my agenda, lunch, iPad, shoes, ( sometimes two pair...I have to stand sometimes at work and I need comfy shoes.) I have been using a Ll Bean canvas tote...maybe not super professional but sturdy and neat. I ordered the zip top option and long straps, and I had it monogrammed. ( of course!). I love it but I love the one you pictured, Thistle! I know you live in or near Milwaukee, I lived there as a child and snow boots were a must from October to April! I remember my mother and my friends' mothers all had these drawstring bags in velveteen or tapestry to carry shoes to wear inside. Must have been a "thing". As kids we wore galoshes that pulled over our shoes.

I was just going to suggest the Longchamp Pliage tote that Diana recommended. It's a wonderful bag, comes in many colors, and has a zip closure. If the weather's bad, you don't want rain or snow falling into your bag. There's also the security aspect.

When I worked I used to tote my shoes in using a Rebecca Minkoff leather MAB bag that carried just about anything I asked of it. I don't go in to the office anymore but I still use it for weekends. It's a great bag, but I just looked and I don't think they make it anymore.

Lately I've been using my big nylon longchamp tote. I put everything in it. The shoes (if I'm bringing them - I keep a couple of pairs at work too) go in a plastic bag before they go in the tote. It also fits my laptop, lunch, hat, mittens, etc. If I don't have the laptop the rest fits into most of my other work bags. I have been mostly using the longchamp and my olive mz wallace because they are nylon and easy to wipe off.

I generally *don't* take boots or booties though if I am changing shoes. Usually it's my oxfords or maybe slipper flats. Obvs tall boots wouldn't fit in my purse! On the rare occasion I need to bring bigger shoes I use a canvas tote - shoes in plastic first of course.

Eta: any way you can just keep the shoes at work? For a few days at least. Then you don't have to lug them around every single day.

I don't commute daily and don't carry shoes but when I commute I do carry all manner of things, at least as big as shoes. I think the bag you posted looks like a very positive option.

I actually use my leather bags and just wipe them off if they get sprayed -- I have a charcoal one from Danier and a bone and black one. And I have a faux leather one from Orb that Viva recommended.

I am embarressed to admit that I carry my work shoes into work every day in a plastic grocery store bag. The parking lot where I work is poorly plowed and heavily salted, making it a mess for even waterproof boots (as they aren't usually salt proof!).

I want a stylish enough alternative. I have been thinking about the tote below, but it might be too heavy/too big.

What do you lovely ladies that live in the frozen tundra but commute in to work do? Links would be lovely
