Thanks Tulle! 13 is too abrupt for my tastes, although I like the front more.

Lol Maneera! I'm a short hair person at heart, so I'll just settle for looking less stunning. ;)

Donnat, it's funny how much hair colour and style can change someone's looks. I was a dark brunette for awhile in college, and suddenly people were calling me exotic, not cute. Once my hair starts to grey, maybe I'll start dyeing it again. I loved being a redhead, but it faded so quickly!

I'm torn between that windblown Dora Carrington look (#8) that I love on you, and the adorably sleek gamine style of #13. As your hair is fine and straight, I wonder whether clever cutting, with some tucking (and maybe pinning) behind the ears could give you both looks in one. Sometimes you just need to go for change! I was fed up with my bob this Summer, too. My hair is thick and heavy, with waves that need to be blown and tugged smooth. The new cut is shorter and slightly layered; when I wash it and let it dry, it looks like a wavier version of #10, and I'm enjoying the retro feel of it--for now. Hope you find a cut that makes you feel light and cool, too.

Eva, I've got the same straight thin hair with cow licks and same need for getting it off my neck in summer. I've got no great solutions but have it cut much like Diana's. Sometimes just putting on one of those stretchy headbands pulls and holds the back hair away from my neck. A small folded scarf or bandana can also work. I often go two months between haircuts, depending on the quality of the last cut. The longer it is, the easier it is to fix quickly with a barrette or something.

I'm so grateful for everyone weighing in! It sounds like moving towards #8 is the best plan; I think I've found a good salon nearby, so I'll go in armed with photos and opinions and hope for the best.

Dee, I think some type of angled bob would work, I’m just trying to figure out what words/photos to say to the hairstylist so I don’t end up looking like Victoria Beckham. Well, her hair. Thanks for the advice!

RachyLou, I’m fine with it growing out for a bit, especially if it’s shorter to start with. Thanks for the positive feedback about the updos; the problem is that a lot of days I can’t really reach my arms above my head to do one. And the low ones can cause neck problems. And none of them work well with the hats I want to be wearing. I do love my braids though.

Word Lily, I think I might just bring all of the photos that I like into the salon & talk about with the stylist first, making very clear my wash & wear preferences, lol. I like 14, but I suspect my hair’s too slippery to look like that without product. Good luck trying to sort out your hair! I’m sure the forum could help you, although I clearly have no tips. ;)

CocoLion, that is a great point re: the more open neckline! I’m glad to have found a hair buddy too. :)

Keturah, lol! My mom would agree with you: she’s always happy when I pull my hair off my face. Sadly, having a big bun on top of my head doesn’t work with hats, which I wear frequently enough for that to be a consideration. I’ll wear one tomorrow though, just for you! hehe

Viva, I’m glad one of us loves hair challenges! I shudder at the stacking in 13, and I think you nailed it when you observed how *modern* it is. It’s getting close to *edgy*, which is one of my anti-words. Thanks for the info on Sossamon; I’ll definitely google her! I loved her in A Knight’s Tale. :)

Thank you TexStyle!

Kiwigal, I’m perfectly happy with *not* being able to put my hair up when it’s in a bob & just having it look the same every day. hehe The problem with the longer hair/updo idea is the hat thing. And I just feel annoyed with my hair right now, unless it’s in a fancier updo, like the braids, which my arms just can’t manage a lot of the time. Even shampooing my hair at its current length has become painful. Hmm. My neighbourhood has an oddly high amount of hair salons, so maybe I could find one that does trims on a discount.

Thanks Astrid! Every comment helps form a consensus, so I appreciate it!

Thank you Angie! I agree; I gave up on my pixie dreams eventually. ;)

Diana, thanks for the photos! I’ll ask about undercutting. When my hair’s shorter, it’s round/full enough for my tastes in the back without any product. Just once it starts to get weighed down I don’t like it so much.

Lol, thank you RunCarla!

What about an inverted, undercut bob like mine? There's not a ton of visible stacking (it's mostly hidden in the undercut) and the back is short enough to be mostly off my neck. It's cut just to the nape in back and curves around my chin in front. The angle helps with my short neck. My hair is pretty thick though - with thinner hair I think you have to use some product or tease it a bit to get the fullness in the back.

I can't find a pic of the back but it's similar to pic #2.

Which reminds me, I really, really need to get a haircut...

Adding, after reading again ... those more modern iterations (13 and 14) will require more time styling and more visits to the salon for upkeep. I'm going to land on 11 - 7/8 as my final suggestion.

I agree with you mostly...I like the length in 2 and 8. A short blunt bob does suit you and if short enough will be totally off your neck which is the annoying part (for me anyway).

I am really drawn to 9 however. To me a bob or a short cut has the following disadvantages:
- constant cutting
- harder to change up
- a bob can be too short to put up but still have hair everywhere.

If your hair was longer, then you could put it up simply for days at home, or tired days, and do some more elaborate braids or up do's for days when you want something fun With your soft fine hair it would not be too harsh on your face, and I can see some up-dos adding to your gamine looks.

My hair is different to yours but I share a cowlick and a squarish face, and I agree that pixie styles somehow sadly don't work so well. I adore them but I find I need more hair somehow. Yet when I had long hair I did not mind a ponytail or up do.

Oh, I love this kind of challenge! My favorite of the E-pics is #8 -- it's a wonderful length on you, it seems to meet your requirements for summer hair, and it can go both ways - storybook sweetness and tomboy gamine.

When I look at your pinterest pics, I am somewhat drawn to the more modern iterations of this style -- in particular 13 (I know, the stacking! But this is a particularly good rendition.) and 14. Either of these would work well on you, I think, but would lift you more into modern hair territory, and I am not sure if that is where you want to be. If you want to stay more retro or timeless, then I would stay with pics 7/8 in strip 11. This is close to what you have in E-pic 8.

Incidentally, I am pretty sure the actress in 7/8 is Shannyn Sossamon, and she is my hairstylist's icon for longish short hairstyles!!! She is always telling me to google her for ideas!

You may have well described my own hair. I have found that a shoulder length bob that I can also put up, is my best look. I don't do bangs, even though they look ok on me especially when putting up hair, because my hair is thin and getting thinner with age.

My favorite lengths/styles for you are 4, 7 and 9. Actually 3 and 4 are very similar but when you have hair this length the open neckline works best I think. (By comparison a pixie might work with higher necklines, I think it's all about having some openness around the face/neck, and you have less of it with neck covering shoulder length hair.)

I agree, that #2 if the best length of the blunt bob.

I think 11-sub-6 would totally work without bangs, and I think that ones' really cute! I really like #14, too, but yeah, I'm not sure thin hair could pull it off; certainly it wouldn't look like that without product and messing with it.

My hair is much straighter than it used to be, but it's still very thick, so it's a good exercise to think about!

I hope you figure it out! I'm being annoyed all of a sudden by how I look with the ubiquitous-for-summer ponytail, but I can't deal with hair on my neck in the heat, either. I'm growing it out, but I've embraced layers for decades now to help deal with my overabundance of hair (and help combat Triangle Head), so I'm struggling with how to put it up and/or if I'll have to abandon layers.

Actually, coming back to it, I think I really like #14, and I think it would look good with less volume, too.

#8 is my fave for you. The one thing about short hair is you really have to go every 6 weeks to keep it short. But if simple, you can go to a Supercuts or Great Clips.

Your hair also really looks great long and put up. If your hair is fine, then maybe having the length is not so bad. And you can do braids.

I have the exact opposite hair of you (thick, frizzy, and wavy underneath) so take this with a grain of salt, but how about an angled bob that is short in the back and longer toward your chin? It would give you extra time without hair on the back of your neck and mine used to grow out pretty well.

Of the pics you posted, I think the eight pic in #11 is cute but reminds me a lot of your current look. Pic #14 is cute too.

Ok lovely forum, I need to hive mind some hair advice. ;)

I love bobs, and would love to wear one year-round, but during the summer, I don't want any hair touching my neck. Since I've always worn blunt bobs in the past, that meant they didn't work in the summer, so I'd grow them out instead. But I'm tired of having to fuss with my hair everyday, and would love to cut it off now instead of waiting until September, if I can find the right cut.

Details on my hair: it is very fine, perfectly straight except for the cowlicks (including a double cow lick in the front), unwilling to hold any type of wave/curl unless I do something like sleeping in pincurls, and somewhere on the average/thin continuum *except* for the 'forelock' area, which is very thick (I learned this when I spent a couple years on a pixie quest, lol). Layers make my hair look thinner.

Details on my face/neck: bangs are atrocious on me, unless I wear the rest of my hair back at all times, and require far too much fussing due to the double cowlick. I have a short neck & round face. Side parts are my friend. ;)

Details on my willingness to put forth effort: essentially non-existent. I will spend 5 minutes on it on a daily basis, perhaps 10 when I'm feeling motivated. I don't want to use heat implements regularly & am very scent-sensitive, so prefer to go product free. However, I would use a product, if I found one that didn't give me a headache, just for the summer months. So I'm only interested in a cut that works with my straight, silky texture & makes my hair look reasonably full without any volumising effort (hence why I always end up in a blunt bob). I also don't have a big budget, so I usually prefer to be able to go quite awhile between hair cuts (another reason for the bob vs a pixie), however in this case I'd be willing to go in some time in the fall to get it all evened out into a blunt bob.

Details on my style: I like to look quirky, bookish, but relaxed/rumpled. My style persona is 'storybook gamine.'

I did a quick run through my outfit posts & grabbed some photos that show my last blunt bob at various lengths, in case that helps (I think #1 is a bit short; #2 is probably my favourite length, #4 is as long as it can get before I have to start fussing with it to make it look good down). And then I went back in time & found a few terrible photobooth self portraits from when I had shorter hair too. I really loved the back of the pixie cut in 6, how round it was (5/6 were taken just after I got it cut, before I put any product in it, so it shows you what my hair does on its own when it's short). Just for fun, I'm including one from the year before too, when I had long red hair. ;)

So does anyone have any ideas for a good cut that'll last 2-4 months before having enough length to be a short blunt bob, flatter my face, work my natural texture, and not touch the back of my neck? I suppose it'll have to be an a-line, but I'm not sure how I feel about 'stacked' bobs. I'd be fine with some type of *bang-free* pixie/bob hybrid, as long as it didn't require frequent trims (I just can't afford pixie upkeep, plus pixies don't work easily with big summer hats either). I've added a few photos from a quick Pinterest search of styles to get the ball rolling. In #11 I'm mainly looking at 7/8, although I like the 6 too, just not sure how it would work without bangs. #13 shows the kind of stacking I don't really like; I prefer #14. Of course, my hair isn't as thick, so it might not do that? Thanks in advance for any help!
