JenniNZ--I am working on the art gallery method. For me, it's more like, oh, that's nice....but it's on sale, too! Need to get it.
AndiB--that is probably good advice, in general. At least for shirt dresses. I like a waist, but you can just get a waistless one and put a belt on it.

kkards--I am also loving the linen section on Quince, but not sure about the shirt dress, because it looks a little short when belted. I like it as a beach cover up, though. The Linenbee web site has some fun, airy linen items.
VioletMyra--that sounds cool. That sounds almost like a project, to make shirt dresses out of work shirts.
bella--these are beautiful, love the first. And I did not think about the "authority" angle--I guess they are great for work.
Dee--Those sound like great dresses, and I can picture the navy one. I, too, have items in my mind I feel like I need, or once had, but the truth is, I have enough!
cat2--It sounds like you have some experiences with shirt dresses. I like the companies you picked--I bet looking at American sportswear brands is the way to go.

JAileen--those are all nice. The last is closest to my style, but the first two are lovely. I especially love how the first is styled with matching leggings and slides--gives the outfit a Georgia O'Keefe vibe.
Janet--this is a fun, easy dress, and that color is so distinctive--really sort of a grassy, Kelly green. I looked at the web site, and if I were one of those uniform dressers, I would get one in every color. They even have a "Lisa Frank" leopard print.
Karie--I could see that happening to me, too. That's why I like the dress in the video--it just looks like a big man's shirt (no waist) belted in the middle.
JAileen--it does seem like a debate. Since I have never owned one, I would probably start with a classic one that looks like a literal dress shirt. But collarless ones are nice, too.
Suz--wow, your technical knowledge is on point! Thanks for the lesson--I am sure you are right about all the variations.

SW Ann--I don't think of them as cool, but I'm sure they are, in the right material. I tend to forget about putting effort into finding the right material, so sometimes I end up with synthetic clothes that I did not realize would be synthetic.
Julie--that looks like my style, I think because of the thinness of the material, and the cap sleeve. You are the second person that is selling a black version to me.
DonnaF--you make the unbelted shirt dress very appealing, and I think that is because you pick a distinct look--above the knee and often utilitarian fabrics. Makes it fun.
Runcarla--I love that--it looks like you could do a lot with that. I love chambray, and I also see it is sleeveless, which makes it extra breezy.
JenniNZ--I never worried about drowning, but some of them do look hot! Including the one in my post. I will have to see some of your other posts to remind myself what clothes you usually wear.

Lisa--maybe a shirt dress over some fun jeans.
Star--because of the "coffee spill" resilience, I think I could go anywhere in a black shirt dress.
Angie--those are all so lovely, and so distinct in their own way. My favorite has to be the RL striped number. Just so sharp!
Jaime--it seems a number of people like the unbelted look, whether they have a waist or not. I like the belted version--especially if I got to wear the one in the video.
Suz--red patent--tell me more! I love 80s fashion. Nice black dress you have there, and nice shoe pairing. I like the other Zara one, also. I think you have a couple that Angie does.

I Love Love Love shirt dresses but I Can't Can't Can't wear them! I have purchased and returned SO MANY over the years. I have a high waist and seems like no matter what, the waist will hit . . . at about my hip bones lol! Which means so much excess fabric when pulled to the proper spot at my waist. My incredible seamstress told me to just not buy any waisted dress. She said they are super difficult to even alter, so many seams. Best advice ever.

Oh Dee I am so with you regarding nostalgic reminders of something I once felt fab in! That’s something I have had to really dial back. I have to think hard just like you have done, in practical terms. I think that I love dresses and skirts but in fact I rarely wear them and already have plenty that I love for the odd occasion. So now I use the “art gallery” method- “Oh, isn’t that beautiful- but I don’t need to own it”.

Big shirtdress fan here. I like sleeveless or dolman sleeves with an inset waist or a beltable fabric. Poplin, gauze and linen blended with cotton to make it soft. I stocked up last year because it was the end of a shirt dress trend cycle and I found several on sale. Mine are from Faherty, Tommy Hilfiger, Tommy Bahama and old one from Tucker,

I had 2 button shirt dresses back in the early 90s, both midi length. One was a 2 tone vertical stripe, 3/4 sleeve with a matching tie belt, the other was navy, more structured and sleek, sleeveless, with a collar, tortoise shell buttons and a belt. I loved that navy dress, felt so chic and put together in it, but for some strange reason I passed it on and I've been looking for something like it ever since. Why? I don't know why really? I doubt I'd really wear it, I hardly ever wear dresses, I'm more of a skirt person and don't wear them very often either. I think it's just a nostalgic reminder of something that I once felt quite fab in.

Hah, the eternal question: What makes a shirt dress? The collar or the buttons? :)
While I do own a v-neck shirt dress, to me what makes the shirt dress is the collar. It is a small way of projecting authority in the sweltering summer temperatures without having to wear a jacket. I've always owned a version of it. This is my current collection.

Shirt dresses are like a shirt in other ways besides the shirt collar -- and after all, shirt collars come in different shapes, from Nehru to Peter Pan to point collars, to a simple band collar.

I do think some designers play a bit fast and loose with the terminology, but if it is 1). made of a shirting type fabric -- which, let's face it, could also be any number of fabrics from cotton poplin to seersucker to gingham to tencel to denim to silk to ultrasuede! --- and 2). is either straight cut like a shirt (or with princess seams, like some fitted shirts....) and/or buttons down the front like a shirt, and/or can be worn straight like a sack, like a long shirt, and/or has cut out or vented sides at the bottom like a shirt, it could be classified as a shirt dress. ;)

Some are mini length. Some knee length. Some midi. Some maxi. Some have elastic at the waist and are meant to be worn belted only (esp. back in the 80s). Some have shoulder pads (ditto!). Some have self belts. Some are sleeved, some without sleeves. Some have narrow straight cuts like a men's shirt and some are wider like a sack and some have voluminous skirts and some are more or less A-line in cut. So I think all the examples people have shown do qualify.

I guess the collar is one really important reason people either like them or not, though....and ditto the shape. The loose straight ones are great on IT and apple body types. The belted types can be nice on an hourglass or can give curves to a straighter body type. The loose straight ones can also be worn open like a lightweight coat jacket, which is a style trick several fabbers have showed to great advantage! And the shorter ones can be worn as tunics for those who suit tunic style!

I like them in theory but have a hard time getting the details right. Some styles that are cut with a shaped waist are too long in the body or too short in the skirt for me, or they feel wrong for my style. And the straight cut ones often have too much fabric by the time they fit me adequately across the bust.
Since I don’t often enjoy belting dresses, that limits my options there too.

However I did recently order this one in Finds because I liked the color and length so much. It’s a Tencel fabric, which I usually like for its drape and softness. I actually quite like it on, even unbelted and loose. The long sleeves a little warm for our summers, so I have not committed to it yet, but I like it well enough that it may be a good addition to my closet. Casual dresses in good-for-me solid colors are not easy to find!

Back in the late 80s, I had a tan cotton shirt dress (not a good color on me!) that nonetheless I wore to death. It had a fitted elasticized waist and was a midi length. I remember wearing it to work in my early work days — office jobs and even for a stint managing a hotel housekeeping staff. I remember cleaning hotel rooms in that dress, LOL!

I have a few shirt dresses. I like loose shapeless ones. The first two are Eileen Fisher, and both are gingham checked fabric, the navy one in tencel and the green one in linen. I love the green one and wore it a lot last year. The third one is also linen, from Tommy Bahama. I bought it for my mother’s big birthday party last year, planning to wear it without the belt. I ended up not wearing it at all, instead wearing cropped jeans and a nice top. I might wear it tomorrow - it’s been in the 90s, and it might be just right.

I love shirtdresses; I think it's the collar. Fitted ones (with waists) are hard for me to fit unless they come in Petites which they never do. I have the green one below, however, but I had to have it hemmed. Loose ones are more versatile for me because I can wear them over pants or tights or (gasp!) even bare legged. The twill one will never be worn bare legged because it is so short. They all hit me a good three inches longer than on the models.

I love them. I don't wear dresses often due to a work dress code involving long pants. But one of my two casual summer dresses is this washed black one. I find it very comfortable and versatile, with or without a belt and with almost any kind of shoes. I've worn it out to dinner, to a party sitting at the edge of the pool with my feet in the water, and just hanging around the house.

I wear shirtdresses all the time all summer. Which in Arizona is LONG! I find them comfortable, versatile, and cool. I can wear one with sneakers or sandals for casual wear, or add a pair of wedge sandals and more jewelry to dress one up. I have several linen and several cotton ones. They are easy to launder, and look good all day.

That's a great 80s shirt dress! I wore them then -- I even had one with a red patent belt that I wore with -- yes! -- red shoes! And I definitely wear them now! I don't have a lot of them at the moment but I really enjoy them.

Well I would certainly if I looked like that! I don't do well with waisted dresses (due to lack of waist!), but do like straighter versions.

YES, Carol! Fun '80s throwback. Great dress! That song was wonderful in the movie Footloose too :)

Shirdresses are MY BEST DRESS! My favourite - hands down. No contest.

LOVE shirt dresses!!!

I wear them belted, AND as a sack like Irina is showing up top. Wore a few shirtdresses last week, actually.

Here's my current collection of shirtdresses:

I am not a dress gal, but I do like to wear collared shirts, so if I were a dress gal I'd say yes to shirt dresses.

Yes, I wear mine. I’ve had this blue linen one for a couple of years and use it a lot. I duplicated it in black this year. The shirt dresses are fairly common in retail and easy to style. I would highly recommend to buy one
