I see I'm not the only one who loves stretch denim!

Sterling, I looked through Nordstrom's regular-price assortment and found a few pairs (see Finds). Not much for me, as I'm looking for a 31-32" inseam with at least 20" ankle opening, so the 34-35" flares tend to lose too much width when hemmed. I did see one pair of COH petite flares that might work, and an inexpensive pair by unknown-to-me brand Tinsel that I'll probably order just in case it's awesome.

Christina F, thank you for the recommendations! Will definitely check those out.

Keix- your post resonates with me because I’m also sensitive to pressure at the waist/ belly area. I sit all day at work so mostly stick with dresses and ponte pants or leggings. Everyone gets so excited about blue jean Fridays at my office- I always get a kick out of this because I find jeans so uncomfortable to sit in and would rather wear anything but! (I do wear jeans outside of work when I don’t have to sit a lot). Thanks for the Anthro link. Will definitely be looking into those.

I have the same tummy-area type of issues. I swear by the Wit & Wisdom Ab-soluton jeans, and now also Ann Taylor jeans (specifically, the ones with lycra, which they call "performance stretch").

My waist is sensitive too and I hate pants/jeans that dig in when sitting down. It's why I don't wear jeans all that often. I've found the pull-on JAG jeans are comfortable and cute (as long as you don't tuck in your shirts). No buttons or zippers to dig in and a nice wide waistband makes them super comfortable.

I knew about trying on shoes later in the day due to potential swelling, but it had not occurred to me that jeans/pants might also fit into that category. I'm with you on the "hard" denim. I can't believe I ever wore it the first time around. Stretch denim is one of humankind's greatest inventions.

Interesting thoughts, thanks for sharing. At the moment I’m tending to stick to dark blue and black slim straight jeans. Although they’re not especially trendy I just prefer how they look on my body.
I do have other types of jeans but I save them for when I’m in the mood for something different.
However.... it’s good to push myself sometimes to try new things.

I need to apply this logic when I sort through my closet. I have a tendency to do it early in the day, which means that I often put things on and wonder why I kept a thing.

I agree, great post, and great analysis. You inspire me to go do the same.
I have the same issues with high waist "hard" denim. In fact, I didn't even get in the band wagon of thick cotton denim because as soon as I tried it on I was reminded of the horrible feeling or the cardboard like material digging into my stomach etc. and also how hot they were. Th 80's look good on paper, but ther was a reason why most people sighed a sigh of relief when they were officially over (circa 1993).

Brava! Fashion is not stylish if it makes you uncomfortable, doesn't suit your taste, and doesn't not make you happy. Great lesson.

Great post. I am getting ready to shop NAS. So far all I have done is collect Finds like a demon.

It never occurred to me to try my pants on at the end of the day. I have always tried them on on weekends while drinking coffee (so you're obviously correct, not the best time). Slaps head.

And hard denim. I could not agree more with you. I purged all my hard denim in early 2018. Gone. Not missed at all. Those Anthro jeans look very interesting. I will definitely be checking them out. Thanks for the link.

I have not seen any pants like you describe. EVERYTHING I have seen is cropped/ankle. And on me, ankle is cropped. Have you had any luck?

Not shopping NAS but your advice is wise. Shoes and jeans need to fit at the worst times of the day - not just when we feel at our best!

I like a mix of stretchy and tailored pants. For me an elastic firm waist is the worst - they just dig in.

Being clear on what works and what we actually have really helps make wise decisions.

I'm feeling inspired today to take Angie's advice! After letting dinner digest for a little while, this evening I physically tried on all of my current pants/jeans to determine if I had any holes to fill from NAS shopping for next season.

I learned a few important lessons:

1) It's vital to try on pants later in the day, not first thing in the morning as I tend to do for a mini closet edit. My stomach is the most sensitive part of my body and it expands multiple inches throughout the day.

2) Last fall/winter I tried out a few pairs of "hard" jeans, boyfriend and straight styles made from thick, mostly cotton denim. Thank goodness they were fairly inexpensive, because those are the pairs that I purged... One pair of old sized-up BF jeans stayed, but otherwise I learned that "real", old-fashioned denim is not for me, especially in high rises.

3) As un-trendy as it is, I should stick to jeggings and ponte pants. I spend all day sitting in my casual bottoms (which are worn a lot for 6 months of the year) and my sensitive waist craves the comfort of stretch fabrications. I have managed to find several pairs that don't stretch out in the rear, which was a perennial problem with early iterations of the jegging trend. I'm glad I picked up the Kut ponte pants from NAS and I think they'll earn their place in my wardrobe.

If anyone else is fond of stretchy pants, I particularly recommend the Anthro denim leggings (attached in Finds) for multiple-day wears without stretching out.

4) I was really hoping to find a pair of flare (not bootcut, not cropped) jeans in the NAS this year, but they seem to have fallen out of fashion. I have an old pair from Express that I'm hanging on to, but they've shrunk enough in the wash that I can no longer wear them with heels. Crossing my fingers for some options in the general pre-fall assortment.

I hope this inspires you to edit your closet before/while shopping for fall this year! If you've done so already, did you learn any interesting lessons?
