This is a big one for sure. I think sewing helped me to realise I had to fit my biggest bits & tailor the rest to fit:)

Another lesson is just because something fits and flatters and is a bargain doesn't mean I have to buy it! It may be destined to become a wardrobe orphan because it doesn't go with anything else or really isn't my style.

We live in a consumer oriented society, and learning to walk away from something is one of the hardest lessons to learn. . . .
Yes, exactly, Jewell! I cannot spend a lot of money on an item AND a lot on alterations. Hemming is ok, but major alterations are just not in the budget right now. I also realize that I need to stop ordering shoes from sites that don't do free returns. That's how I ended up with my too tight pumps, because I thought I could live with them.

Huge realization for me too! I learned a variation of that in the last year. I was always fascinated by other people's style and I'd buy things that reminded me of styles I loved, with mixed success. One of the most valuable realizations I came to after joining YLF was that I had my own style. I didn't need to mimic others. I needed to explore and hone mine. I can adore someone's style (Ironkurtin, Annagybe, Alaskagirl, Cocolion, our own little Ms. Suz) but it didn't mean that I needed to dress like them.

Learning to leave behind something that doesn't fit or something that is a style you love that isn't flattering enough for you or something that is just a phenomenally good deal is the absolute best lesson learned!

Well congrats on adding another valuable lesson to your list of lessons learned! The issue of fit is a hard one. I think women tend to make the most compromises in this area when we should be doing just the opposite. I've had to learn to leave ill-fitting garments in the store for the same reasons you listed plus I'm usually unwilling to pay the added cost of alterations.

I think this will make shopping easier in the long run. Not settling on fit or hoping that shoes stretch out. Happy for you that you could return the coat and put that money back in your pocket for something excellent.

This is a huge realization and one that many of us have to come to the hard way. Alas. But better a return than an unworn mistake.

I've just recently realized that just because I like something does not mean that I can wear it! For me, most often the issue is one of size. I find myself between sizes a lot, so I'm usually buying something that's either a little too tight or a little too loose. I've finally come to the realization that neither is going to work! Even if I force myself to wear ill-fitting clothes that I love on the rack (because that's how I do), I still won't feel great about myself.

For those of you who saw it, I had to return the red trench coat I bought last week for just this reason. The shoulders were too tight in a small, and the whole coat was too large in a medium. Right now, I'm wearing a shoe that I've been hoping and praying would stretch out, but it hasn't so my little feet are suffering. They were cheap, but I still wasted $35 if I'm not gonna wear them!

Thanks, YLF, for helping me come to my senses!
