I was in this situation just last month. I went to TJ Maxx and purchased a raft of pieces, like Joie silk tops on sale. When I got home, I realized only one piece was in my YLF purchase plan.... to upgrade my cheap shoes and add a few nice handbags. I kept the Rebecca Minkoff  handbag and returned all the rest. Sometimes just getting out of the store and bringing the stuff home can be a big help in assessing our true feelings for something. And good for you for taking the stuff back instead of just saying, "Oh well, it's such a hassle to return..." When I am on the fence, I think back to other items I have kept because they seemed "pretty good," and I ask myself whether they have become workhorses or just kind of sit there. I don't think any of them have become workhorses except for one pair of pants, and that was because it was the only pair of pants that I had that was a heavy enough weight for winter wear. That makes so much sense and yet sometimes I can't see it. For example, some casual-wear ankle pants I finally tossed out were in a print, but limited colors, for which I had planned to find a top, but said top with all the right features has never materialized, nor do I especially want to find one now as it would not be that useful with my other items, and the length is off--pfft. I recently "stopped by" WHBM and of course found a pencil (straight) skirt I had to have, and some casual pants, on sale, of course. Then at home I realize, no, it's not the right direction and yes, I have things I like better and somehow I could see why, at home. So back they went and with some slow creaking,   more  wardrobe progress was made as well. Then when thinking about that, I compared what I wore out to do errands with some other items I hadn't worn this year but surely,  probably would get around to it, they were about right, pretty good, must have or I wouldn't have gotten them in the first place. Or maybe they could be loungewear, only I'm preferring other items I have  now anyway.  And out they went.  Hocus pocus, find some focus!
