Life transitions are tricky to navigate because you don't really know what you'll want to wear in the new life. I've found that it's best to go slowly and not toss things out that could be useful.

Your post struck home with me. I'm planning to retire in 12 months and considering whether to consign a lot of my wardrobe while it's still fashionable enough to sell. (Don't worry - I have enough clothes in my closet to stay decently covered even if I consign a bunch.) I know that I won't get a lot of post-retirement wear from heels and pencil skirts, so I'm not having a problem letting those go. I do wonder about blazers and other jackets, though. Do you find yourself wearing blazers with jeans in retirement? Or do you reach for a comfy cardigan or other knitwear?
And like Merwoman, I'd love to know if you miss the "dressing up" aspect of work? Some days, the "dressing up" is the best part of the workday for me.

Congrats for achieving retirement so early! Such a wise decision to empty out your closet, so that you can see what is there! It's so liberating! It's amazing how a lifestyle change can impact our wardrobe. Do you miss 'dressing up'?

Interesting I just spent the morning evaluating my spring/ summer clothes and then I open this blog about closet purging. Last January I moved into a new phase of my life retirement at a young 57 after working in a professional career. Needless to say I have a closet full of clothes. I have been editing/purging my closet little by little. Initially with trpidation that I was certainly going to need a certain item. Now after a full year I am getting better at letting items go and realize I don't miss them. Out of sight out of mind. Plus I can see what I have to make interesting combinations I never thought about before. I don't think I will get down to one of these people with 30 items in there closet but I do believe less is more.
This blog has helped tremendously in gaing an understanding of what is in style and how to put it together.
