Gradfashionista-looked at both posts. I think the issue is, to my eye, it looks like the coat is meant to hit (at the hem as well as the pocket placement) quite a bit higher on your body than it is, and it's swallowing your frame up. It's also a bold print. I like the idea of a coat like this, but shorter.

I hope you don't feel chased away! We all have different footwear needs and challenges. I actually find totally flat flats or sneakers less comfortable than a round toed 1.5" wedge heel because of how my instep, arch, and toes are shaped, and I don't like to wear heels higher than 2". I tend to just ignore comments that don't work for me (due to comfort needs for footwear, or not accounting for fit challenges of living with a curvy plus-size body where clothes hang differently.) Most people don't mean anything bad, they just don't get what it's like to live in your shoes. (Literally, in this case.)

Have you ever browsed the blog Barking Dog Shoes, BTW? That's my go-to place for comfy shoe ideas (sneakers included.) The blogger features reviews for very serious or painful foot problems. I don't have those problems myself, just "higher volume" in certain parts of my feet that mean specific shapes of shoes hurt or don't fit, and feet that are kind of picky overall, so I benefit from the reviews of those who REALLY need a well made, comfortable shoe.

The peaked lapel fits you best, better than both of the leopard coats, and fwiw, I like it better :-)

I think it could also be shortened though. Not sure how much. But I think with shortening, it would be awesome!

Also, I think you need to be ok with the sleeves long (as opposed to scrunched).

Thanks for your boost, Angie.

Janet, the light shoes issue is a good point. In winter, my footwear is uniformly black.

Gryffin, so true. I ran the coats by my mother, who is in her late 60s. We have very different taste, age difference aside. She loved the longer length and said she wouldn't shorten it past mid-calf. A heel admittedly would make a huge difference here, but I'm going to try one size down in both.

Diana--yeah, it ends pretty low on me, and I have an average-long torso and am not short waisted. Hmm. I wonder if this can be resolved through sizing.

I like the plaid but I do think the leopard looks too overwhelming. For me it's actually that the stance is too low (see where the neckline ends on the model vs on you) and that's not easily fixed unless you grow several inches. As a very short waisted person I have this problem all the time!

Re:length. I would personally shorten to knee length or just above. I actually think the length of the plaid one looks nice but for me at least I find that anything longer than knee length feels too heavy and restrictive. Maybe I just take giant steps or something but I don't like to feel a heavy coat slapping against my calves when I walk. I used to have a very nice long wool coat when they were in style and it was so orphaned it wasn't even funny. I just never wanted to wear it. Unless your calves get really cold or something I don't think long coats are v practical either as they drag in the snow, on the bus floor, etc.

Thank you for the reminder about your foot issues -- I wasn't sure whether this was what you would actually be wearing on a daily basis, but if it is, I would personally have the coats tailored to be a little shorter, since you will not be wearing any sort of heels to help balance the length of the coat. Just my personal taste. I'd prefer to see a bit more pant leg beneath the coat because this current length really seems to call a lot of attention to footwear.

If you regularly wear *darker* shoes/sneakers that blend more with your dark pants, I think this length would be easier to work with. As pictured, and with the current coat lengths, the light colored shoes really sort of pull focus away from the fab coats. At least that's what I'm seeing, but I admit, I am not the biggest fan of light colored shoes with dark outfits.

GF - I love them both. I actually love the length. I'm 57 yo and in the 90's we wore "maxi" coats. (Man I still miss mine!!) Practical, elegant, dashing. Very 1900's menswear elegance. The gorgeous fabrics and menswear tailoring has me crushing on this look. Realize that this length is fringe. If you ask opinions, people's eyes will not be accustomed to it. I wear many things that would not get love from the forum. Remember personal style/signature style is just that. Does this length make your heart sing? I have the long alpaca coat from Peruvian connection and it's the same length or longer. I love it. But realize everyone is giving you their thoughts on what is most flattering right now. As trends change people eyes adjust. You can follow current thoughts on flattery, and that's great, or you can wear what you find most pleasing but if your aesthetic is ahead of the curve remember not everyone will appreciate the piece as you do.

ETA: my mortons neuroma beams sympathy to your feet. Happy feet at all cost!!

GF, look at the lengths of the coats on the models. They are shorter and less overwhelming. Plus they're wearing heels, which makes the coats even shorter. Visually, to my eye, the length of these coats swallow you up. They look longer with flats.

I completely understand the need for comfortable footwear. Wear your sneakers with pride. Plus they are very fashionable, so rock on. Please continue feeling welcome here. Know that your footwear choices will always have my unconditional support.

I like the leopard! Can you just add a disclaimer to your posts about your footwear limitations? I'm sure it's annoying to have to say it every time, but I know how hard it is for me to remember everyone's limitations.

Why does it look too long? I wonder if my hips potentially cause the coats to flare, since the latter hang straight on the models (then again, clipping). Maybe sizing down would help address that issue.

If this were to be a staple, then the footwear would necesssarily be casual and restricted.

In truth, I reduced my frequency of posting here in part because it was often suggested that I change footwear. My feet are physically deformed and I don't have the luxury of wearing refined shoes, heeled boots, etc., if I intend to actually walk. Yes, I would choose different shoes if I could, but I can't, and need to make do with what I have, rotating ugly clunky shoes with less ugly and less ugly counterparts. On occassion, I have posted photos of myself wearing more normal footwear but that was usually to preclude "choose more suitable shoes" comments. I know no offense was intended, but the shoe comments are particularly disheartening because my footwear isn't a reflection of how I'd like to dress.

I'm with Angie. It may help you to style the coat as you would wear it too - with boots, or a more refined shoe, and a knit top underneath . Wear all of this to your tailor's shop and have the coat pinned so that you can assess the look better.

That's a lot of coat(s)!
I'm following Angie , but I don't really like them as full- length long coats. Maybe I'm too stuck in other styles for that, like a straighter reefer or trench.
So if you cut them off to more of a walking- coat style, do you need the Smythe of would you look elsewhere for a shorter coat.

A good 8 to 10 inches too long, and you need to layer more than a tee underneath to assess fit. The plaid is a better length, right away.

Sleeve length looks good for a coat. Unless it bothers you.

Personally, I prefer the leopard.

I couldn't resist trying on these two styles for two reasons: both had a menswear vibe, with just enough feminine tailoring; and both had appealing fabric compositions, namely wool/alpaca and wool/silk. These are Smythe-pricey coats, and seem very well made. I imagine they won't hit the sale rack, as both are already or nearly sold out at several online vendors.

I sized up one size from my regular Smythe jacket size in order to accommodate my hips comfortably and allow for the option of wearing sweaters.

The leopard is a lot of fun, wonderfully soft, but clearly overwhelming. It would probably need to be shortened for anyone under 5'8", I'm guessing. The material is a bit heavier than the peak lapel coat, and there is a slight amount of resistance or stiffness when raising my arms--nothing unusual for jackets, though.

The peak lapel coat is so comfortable that you'll forget you're wearing it. The fabric is 20% nylon, which adds significant stretch to the extent that you can move your arms with ease in any direction. It's still a bit long when compared to the model, but I wouldn't shorten it. I like the length. While I prefer the higher button placement of the leopard coat, the lower 'boyfriend blazer' buttons here are not a make-or-break issue.

I suppose the benefit of having difficulty finding denim and shoes that fit mean there are more outrageous options vis-a-vis jackets. Smythe logic.
