I work with college students so I see leggings in all sorts of interesting combinations! But I found some looks on department store websites today (I got curious!) and they were much better than what I usually see. You're right about the details; I think all I have observed today has been very different and more thoughtful than what I have encountered day to day. I'm still not super confident about leggings, but I'll have to play around with them! Maya's and Angie's replies make a lot of sense and based on those I won't pair them with skirts. I'm still considering the look with a dress. I don't worry so much about the young vs. polished look; I generally enjoy wearing funky combinations. But I would have minded looking "dated" a little bit if I'm honest. Seems like that's not an issue, though. I wouldn't wear them with a dress or a skirt, personally. It does look very young to me, but it's also not as polished as I want my style to be. I am in my low twenties, so I know I *could* wear younger looks, but I have always steered away from this particular look. What are the benefits of it? To me it breaks up a legline when a bare or hosed leg would create a longer, leaner line.
