I'm 49 and it was so hot the other day that when I saw several considerably-older-than me women out in public in really quite short shorts I donned a pair of baggy (but not long!) shorts and asked my early-20s daughter whether it would be unbecoming for a woman of my age to be seen in public wearing shorts. She said "absolutely not - it's fine!" I queried her reaction and asked her to reconsider with due consideration for innocent strangers who would be thus exposed to the sight. She carefully inspected my legs from all angles and again declared that it would be fine, and that I am fit and have good legs. "It might be different if your legs looked bad but they don't." Again I asked her to reconsider, pointing out that I AM NEARLY 50. She would have none of it. She didn't hesitate to tell me to change into a closer-fitting top though.

So I say wear your capri leggings if you want to and don't worry about it! And if you prefer to wear skin-coloured capri leggings, wear those -- or any colour you like, if you feel more comfortable covering up in that way, and consider yourself decidedly modest compared to certain much older women!

Below the knee leggings is a Trinny recommendation, especially for pear shapes. I've been meaning to try it out, but I haven't come across a legging that falls in the right spot on me.

I'm wearing Capri leggings today! I think there is an Angie blog post about book ending black capris with something black on the top of your outfit, even if just a cami. I don't always do that but it's an idea.

I am in my 40's and do this, but I tread carefully. Don't want to be cutesy. I did get some cork (taupe) colored cargo leggings by Hue for the warmer weather. Might shorten them to capri length.

I hope its ok to wear short dresses and leggings in your 40's because I quite often do! I have the same problem: lots of great summer dresses that are too short. I bought one viscose one that was perfect.. and then it shrank of course. I have also other dark colours that I wear with dresses, like navy and a very dark turquoise that are good too, not too childish.

I just saw "a woman of a certain age" sporting this look at a local boutique. She had kind an "arty" dress and funky sandals with it and it totally worked. She looked comfortable and like she owned the look. Go for it!

Oh yeah, I would start with basic black and then branch out.

Definitely. Last year I saw this woman looking totally fabulous in a horizontal striped dress and black leggings and sandals with some heel. I'd maybe stay away from ice cream colours and lace trim on the leggings, but it all depends.
Hi Wendi! I live in AZ too. Some people swear by leggings in the heat because of their wicking properties. I think they're fine for someone in their 40's (better than wearing a mini-dress alone, right?). I'd try black to start. Khaki might look too much like bare skin. I like the idea of neutrals, but then I like neutrals in general!

I live in a hot climate (AZ). I keep seeing lots of cute summery dresses, but some of them are shorter than I'd be comfortable in. Some of my young (20s) friends wear capri leggings with short dresses to be more modest. Would this look okay on someone in their 40s? Should I wear a color that coordinates with the dress, or stick to a neutral like ivory or khaki or black? Any advice?
