Nomad, someone posted that on the Redefining Strength page today, lol. Cori is all about muscle activation/getting people to use their muscles correctly instead of, in this case, letting the legs or lower back take over. She's also super positive and very real. Can't recommend her highly enough. https://redefiningstrength.com/

For all those who wonder how to add muscle to the rear, there is a genetic component to how we each gain muscle (I have a really hard time adding to muscle around my shoulders), but there's also a widespread condition called "gluteal amnesia" (yes, really! ). Because we sit so much and spend so much time in nonideal postures, our glutes can forget how to fire. It's really common, but also fixable.

https://www.self.com/story/what-is-gluteal-amnesia

RL, right there with you on the flat butt bench. I can develop muscles in my arms and shins but my butt remains flat as ever. My cross-fit friends tell me I can lose my saddle-bags if I try cross-fit but another contingent tells me they are genetic.

Christine F, that may be true. When I was young, I don't think it occurred to me to worry about that kind of stuff. (When I was in high school, a trainer told me she had exercises to make my thighs thinner--I thought she was nuts) And I probably didn't need to worry. I had a pretty decent little bod, if you like soccer thighs, including a bubble butt. As my weight has fluctuated over the last few years, there have been times that I can put on pants from high school. There is always an awkward poof at the top of my butt, about as big as my hand. If not for that past, I don't think I'd mind the way it looks now.

BTW, the trainer I wrote to, Cori Levkowith, really helped me get back on my feet (literally) when I pulled my back so badly I was crawling around our apt on hands & knees for a few days. She borrows from PT as needed, and has several programs that focus on the low back/butt area that you mention, and started me with exercises from her Booty Burners. It's a silly name, but solid exercises and science. She's at Redefining Strength online. She has tons of followers, and I swear she remembers every single one of us and what's going on with each person.

FashIntern, I suspect many people dislike their own butts for one reason or another. Leggings seem to live at some nexus of anxiety people have about that part of their body. Maybe it's because we can't really see it?

I have a flat, wide, low slung butt. My husband likes it (he has NO butt) and I don't care about anyone else. That said, the exercises I do for my back and hip, which I learned at PT, have helped a bit with the flat part of things. I'll always have cellulite, so I'll still treat leggings as leggings, because no one but me and my husband need to see it.

"I personally wouldn't if my legs & butt weren't small" lol, what I dislike about my butt right now is that it needs to get bigger--it's too flat! Need to add some muscle, especially on top, to build up its roundness again. But to each her own.

I'm retired, an artist/designer & leggings fit my lifestyle. They also are perfect for my figure because I'm lucky enough to have really great legs (I'm 72 & barely 4'11" on a good day) and my butt is ok too. My "signature look" is leggings (heavy enough to not be see-through) usually with a tunic top (to crotch-level) with unusual booties and kimono-type jacket if I need a cover-up. But I'm not in the work force so I have more latitude than most. When I worked (admittedly not since middle 2000's) I wore mostly unmatched suits and dresses (in the legal/administrative field) & that probably hasn't changed too much. So it's dependent on your lifestyle, and also what suits your figure. I see LOTS of women whose thighs & derriere are 2 or 3 times the size of my own and they're wearing leggings to the supermarket. I personally wouldn't if my legs & butt weren't small, but that's their choice & I support everyone having a choice!

I have had a lot of discussions about this with my friends and this is what I learned

- it is preferable to show the butt as opposed to the bust. My Brit friends find showing off the bust more attractive.

- folk also believe that shapely butts can be obtained by fitness activity and so it is fine to take pride in and 'show off' the butt

My eye has adjusted to leggings as pants. Mostly! I have a poison eye for leggings that are so thin that they veer into wedgie territory.

Lots of good discussion here.

Rachy, to April's point - substantial leggings are like pants these days. Dead right. Ten years ago leggings were like hosiery, and that's when they should be worn as an accessory.

mntsofthemoon, I liked your thorough take on the leggings situation. Nicely done.

I wear leggings as pants, but only when I'm wearing a tunic or top or whatever that is long enough to cover my butt and lady bits and all. I even generally wear long tops with my jeggings & skinny jeans. I pretty much LIVE in leggings, jeggings, and skinnies when I'm not at work (unfortunately, my work has a dress code and I haven't been at this job long enough to test the boundaries LOL)
My favorite brands:
* Leggings: Hue & I recently discovered Ann Taylor Loft has good leggings at their outlet
* Jeggings & skinny jeans: AG Adriano Goldschmeid. Pricey, so I have to buy them secondhand (consignment or thrift), or at places like TJMAXX, Nordstrom Rack, etc
* standard skinny jeans: gap
* skinny jeans and jeggings in trendy colors/washes etc: h&m

Yea that’s what I’ve been worried about. I look at some leggings at the store and they are so obviously see thru. And I’ve seen some girls wearing those as pants and u can basically see the prints on their undies. And I just, since I’m so new to this, I just am like “wtf are the rules here” lmao...but again they look soooo comfy lol

Molly, you've got tons of good advice on here ... I think I'm now convinced this is generational (I'm from the cover your bum generation lol!). BUT I will echo the substantial fabric tip - leggings should not be see through!! If they show the print on your undies, they are tights and belong under a skirt or a dress. If they are proper pants thickness, then you've got more latitude.

Ok. I wanna *fight* about leggings I’m a baker (and a techical writer). At the bakery, we wear athletic gear leggings to work in production. Obviously then, we all appear on the street in them going to and from work. And I’m fine with that and even honestly feel now regular pants are stodgy when I see them. BUT gear leggings are substantial.

You do see people trying to wear footless tights as gear leggings/pants, and... Just no. It is better to wear a leotard and tights and let everyone think you are a dancer than to try and wear footless tights as leggings. Ok?

Just gonna chime in here and share my perspective/experience. I agree with others that I think how leggings are worn depends on several factors including age, region and for what activity.

For example, I live in the greater Los Angeles area and many, many young women (think Middle School up to early 30's) wear leggings with Cropped tops (all the rage at the moment). Think Nicki Minage, Iggy Azalea, Cardi B, etc. In my neck of woods there is no shame in showing off one's "booty". However, this way of wearing leggings is as a casual outfit - NOT in the work force.

I think as one goes up the age bracket leggings are worn in different and perhaps more modest ways. I work in a very professional environment and several years back HR put out an updated dress code (mostly for para professionals and clerks) who were wearing leggings to work as pants. It was not acceptable in that particular environment.

I have to say I do not see many women wearing leggings with tunics in my neck of the woods. Denim and trendy jeans are more popular.

Lastly, I see women of ALL ages wearing leggings as their workout gear and running errands. I see cropped tops, workout tops - but nothing so long as to cover the bottom as much as others mentioned.

So there you go - food for thought. I think it depends on where you live, your age and the environment in which you will be wearing said leggings. All the best to you! cheers

I wear leggings all the time but never without a long shirt/dress/tunic when I'm out in public. I'm just not a fan of the look on anyone over the age of 10.

It's become a completely acceptable fashion look to wear leggings as pants because of the ongoing and extremely popular Athleisure trend in the US/Canada. I see it many, many times a day here - especially on girls and women up to the age of about 30.

Yep, keep the butt and crotch covered, and you’re good. Leggings can be fab with tall boots and a tunic length top or sweater. Enjoy! It’s very comfy.

Molly, there has been a loooooong arc of discussing the correct wearing of leggings on YLF.

Way back when YLF was young, Angie's rule was "leggings are not pants, they're an accessory, like socks or tights." Since then, this view has evolved along with leggings: they have become thicker and sturdier and more pants-like and so the guidelines for wearing have broadened a bit.

Personally, I agree with SF -- cover the butt or it's TMI. Leggings are the perfect thing to wear with, say, a mini-dress. You get the look of the mini without the "I see London, I see France" problem (particularly when climbing in and out of a car.)
