What styles are you looking at? I'm wondering if you have less stock at your Danier.
Something like the following seems like it would layer immaculately under a coat:
http://www.danier.com/tonya/d/1735_c_20_cl_6810

Your first leather jacket? How?
For me it's THE piece, the one I wear over and over again.
I always wear a leather jacket as indoor wear.
I wear under coat, under ponchos, under trenchs!
It's perfect as indoor wear, better than knits, knits get worn out quickly and you have the replace it after a season, leather jacket last forever!

I just posted this in Staysfit's leather jacket thread, then realised I should have put it here. Edit, edit. It must be Monday.

For myself, I prefer soft, lightweight leather and a close fit. I have two which I treat as toppers in transitional seasons and mid-layers under coats in cooler weather. I don't layer much underneath. I've worn Mr Edge's Perfecto-style jacket once or twice over a woolly wrap style jacket and it worked OK but the look didn't really grab me. Makes me look like I'm about to hop on a motorcycle.

Don't think I've ever worn them indoors.

It's true, some jackets "say" outerwear and others not as much. One more thing I thought of is that if you wear a silk blouse or think silk blend sweater under a leather jacket it can be quite comfortable but if you try to wear a cotton blouse under the same leather jacket it migiht feel bulkier. So I guess if you are used to buying things to be worn in layers you are going to have an easier time because you might intuitively know this.

Sara -my thoughts exactly when I looked at Angie's jackets. So I was interested to see that she does layer her (apparently) "outer" wear jacket under a coat. I am going to bring my coat and try it at the store.

I agree totally about the look tending toward outdoor or indoor too. Like Angie's #1 above says outerwear, and her #3 says indoor wear to me. But if they can cross over, then all the better.

Sara, that's a very helpful thought process. Thank you!

I guess my primary wear would be indoor blazer substitute to be layered over if necessary.

And I think the ones I tried felt like light outdoor jackets to me, primarily. But maybe I nee to try them on again and reconsider with that in mind.

Texstyle, you are right - the fit is the real issue, not the fabrication. But style also plays into it. Some styles just "look" like outerwear more than others.

At least to me. Maybe I'm wrong in my thoughts, though!

I love shiny's comment about all the choice and subtle nuances ;-)

I've ended up along the lines of Diana where I might be 'able' to put my winter coat over my leather jacket, but that's way too layered up for me. I always have a roomy winter puffer that can fit over anything if needed, but I hope not to need to.

I'd never put a leather jacket (being worn as outerwear) over another jacket for the same reason (well, that and the whole hemlines/lengths would probably never work out either).

But unless I purposely bought leather for outerwear, I DO expect my leather to do double duty -- indoor wear and light outdoor service. That said, I am likely to take off any jacket (leather more likely than fabric though) during the day because I'm too warm or restricted. SO I must be able to wear some sort of sleeves under it comfortably so I CAN remove when necessary. Catch22 - because that's probably warming me up/restricting me so I'm more likely to remove it.

I have worn sleeveless under leather, but just when running errands or going for coffee when the jacket can stay on the whole time.

So, I guess in all the discussions, I've lost track of your intended function for the jacket. If you can get secondary/tertiary functions out of it great, but I'd buy with that primary use in mind.

I do think it's a personal preference of how much material (bulk and lack of free movement) one can stand. A fitted leather jacket is going to be tough to layer under, aside from a thin fitted top. A blouse under many fitted jackets would end up a mess of wrinkles if you took the jacket off. So it probably depends on the wardrobe you have. If you wear a lot of thin, fitted tops, a fitted leather jacket will work. If you like to wear bulkier items like thicker sweaters and blouses that tuck, etc., I'm not so sure you want a fitted jacket.

I have jackets that are more fitted and some that are not. Doesn't really matter if they are leather or not, because it's the same issue no matter what the fabrication. My only leather jacket is an outside jacket with enough room to layer over a couple of thinner layers. My warmest coat has enough room to go over bulkier items but not over that leather jacket.

It's totally subjective! Diana and Jonesy couldn't wear the leather jackets that I wear indoors because they run hot.

Leather jackets do come in different weights. My white one is much lighter than this particular black one.

You know, Angie, it is clearly subjective, because Sveta wears the first one as outerwear with stuff layered beneath it. The very same jacket!! And she said she could never wear it indoors. But she wears two other leather jackets indoors. I am a bit stumped because all the ones I tried seems approximately the same weight and heft - just that the ones I liked had more collar stuff going on so felt a bit more substantial in that respect than a typical blazer would feel.

Right. Got it, Angie. This is a helpful visual.

Now I just need to figure out what the heck those jackets I tried on WERE!!

I would prefer to wear my leather jackets as blazer alternatives, layered under a coat. OR as stand-alone jackets.

The ones I tried felt like stand-alone jackets. I could have worn a light sweater under them....but layering over them would have felt odd.

I THINK. But maybe I need to go try that. Bring my coat along and see how it feels with one of those in the store!

It is possible that what is showing in the store right now is the mid-range fall jacket intended to be worn on its own as outdoor wear in autumn weather with maybe a light sweater layered beneath.

And perhaps they just don't have too many indoor blazer alternative jackets in the store now.

Hmmm. Off to ponder some more.

I can layer all my coats over all my leather jackets, and below is the proof:

Black leather jacket + red coat

White leather jacket + red coat

I won't buy a leather jacket that can't be worn in this way. I absolutely keep my leather jackets on inside when it's cold. I run very cold.

I can also layer a camisole, thermal undies and a turtleneck under my leather jackets if need be. I do not layer a blazer under my leather jackets because that would look funny with my style of leather jackets.

I hope this information helps you, Suz. I take perfect fit very seriously because my style is minimal so - I'm anal about these things.

Ha, Jennifer - thank you so much for looking.

Alas - you have missed some of this week's hot threads. Una already discovered this jacket for me. Various others also fell in love. Several (including k can shop and CocoLion) tried it on. You can see it in their threads. http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ket-report and http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ot-so-much

Angie weighed in before they showed the pics and said it wasn't the right style for me and seeing it on them, I know she is right. I have a long neck, short waist, etc.

I'll be interested to know what you think based on the reports. I'm sure it's not my "it" jacket.

Suz, I think I found your jacket. This thread got me surfing. I may run to the mall today and try this one on myself:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/tr.....ltback=966

It's NAVY.

Only thing I'm not thrilled about (other than the fact it's regular, so likely will not fit me -- though 20 inch length is same as my white jacket. Sleeves undoubtedly will be too long...) is that it has a strip of knit. What is up with that? I suppose it makes for a more forgiving fit that will fit a range of body types, but to my eye it seems to cheapen the jacket.

But it's NAVY. So maybe it's worth a shot?

I have a heavier leather jacket which is clearly outerwear, which I can layer under.

I have other jackets that are quite thing, which I could probably layer over if I were so inclined.

I think it depends on the actual item and your style. I don't think all leather jackets and coats can automatically be layered.

Shiny - that was my perception, too - i thought of longer, much heftier weight jackets/coats when I thought of leather that could be layered under.

That's why I got totally confused at Danier. And Sveta's post confused me even more because she layers under what is clearly a jacket.

I agree with Sveta that her teak jacket is probably too heavy for indoor wear. But I could not get anything to layer UNDER it in my size.

Ditto for the red one I tried.

In other words, I'm actually experiencing your fit problems, I suspect.

Sveta, I think there must not have been any of these thinner leather jackets in the Kingston store. Because every one I tried on was about the weight of your teak one. There were one or two that felt a bit lighter but that was only because they didn't have foldover collars, etc. Less detailing.

There were THICKER heavier jackets than these - and those were the kind I imagined were definitely for outer wear. But I couldn't figure out the ones I tried.

Shannon, not a stupid question at ALL - clearly I am confused. And Danier's website isn't much help because they don't distinguish. And neither did the SA.

Sorry to be such a pain. I don't want to buy an expensive closet orphan. I think I WOULD be too hot in either of the jackets I tried for indoor wear. I guess I may have to wait to see what else they come out with, or try the raspberry with a sweater under and see how I feel.

Oh, to have such choice, and be able to fret about such subtle nuances! I am resigned to whatever will fit me, and beggars can't be so choosy. I have two pleather jackets (F21 black moto, AT white scuba) and one real leather (BR-- a buttery color).

I wear the F21 black moto as a light indoor layer all the time. Even though it's pleather it's so lightweight, has 3/4 sleeves, is cropped and looks best unzipped, so it does not make me hot at all. In fact it's fairly useless as an outdoor layer as soon as temps dip: it may keep my shoulders warm but since it's so cropped my midsection will be too chilly. It layers quite easily under all of my coats -- as easy as any cardigan, easier than many of my blazers. With 3/4 sleeves there's no tightness in the arms and good freedom of movement. The big downside with it is the zippers on the sleeves: I worry about snagging the lining of my coat and ruining it.

ETA: the F21 black moto is so light and insubstantial, I can actually roll it up and fit it into my handbag, just as I do a cardigan, to bring along just in case.

The AT white scuba, which is also pleather, is a more substantial weight and thickness than the fun F21. It fits quite snug/form fitting yet I can wear a cardigan under, no problem, and I can zip it up too. I do wear it as an inside layer from time to time, but only when it's super cold inside, in other words, it wasn't necessarily my intention but wherever we are is freezing so I just leave the jacket on. If I layered it under a coat, it would probably fit, but likely the restrictive feeling in the arms would drive me nuts. And it'd have to be super cold out to want to do that.

Finally, the BR buttery-colored leather jacket, which is rather old (pre-YLF) but I still like it, is even more substantial weight. It would not fit under any of my coats. It is outwear only, though it's shaped more like a blazer, as instead of a zipper it has buttons. There is room under it for a sweater, but not a blazer, unless it was a super thin one, and a short one, because it'd look sloppy having the blazer hang inches below the jacket, no? It doesn't fit as snug as the other two, has a bit more room than that, and I believe I may have even purchased it when my weight was 10 lbs higher.

When I think of leather jackets that a blazer can be worn under, I think of more classic styles, that are longer. Like this:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/pro.....slotId%3D9

http://www1.macys.com/shop/pro.....Type=PDPZ1

And to be picky I'd call those "coats" not jackets.

OK, I may be a weird one but I have quite a distinction between a leather jacket as a outerwear and indoor wear. The key for me is the thickness of the leather: to be considered an indoor jacket the leather should be very thin and soft - otherwise it would be too hot indoors. My teak jacket is an outdoor wear for me for this very reason: the leather is too thick and it will be too hot inside. So because it is an outerwear I treat is as any other outer wear (trench for example): I need to layer under it for it to be practical. I can wear a thick sweater of a think jacket under it: in this case I remove my leather outdoor jacket in the office and have a jacket to wear indoors which I like to do.
My other 2 leather jackets are purely indoor wear for me: I only layer a thin shirt, top or t-neck under them AND I can layer all my coats and trenches over. The leather is thinner in them and the design is less covered. Of course they can be worn as light toppers outdoors but honestly in our climate it is not very practical: we have too short a window for such outdoor wear IMO. For me they cannot both for that very reason: if a leather jacket is warm enough to wear in a chilly weather it is too hot to wear indoors.
So my teak jacket is an alternative for a trench really when I need the warmth of the trench for the elements but want a different silhouette.
BTW I would also consider Shannon's jackets as indoor wear - meaning I can wear them indoors without suffocating.

I have three leather jackets and wear all them indoors and as light outdoor toppers when the weather allows. I'm not sure a jacket needs to be EITHER indoor or outdoor - why can't it be both?

Also, there are jackets at Danier that are clearly outdoor jackets and others that are blazers and I'm wondering if you're confusing the two? (sorry if that sounded insulting - wasn't meant to)

The black one I recently purchased is a blazer - the lining is light and the leather soft. I will be wearing it in my office with a dress or shirt underneath. But I can also wear it now over a tee with jeans as my outerwear. It can serve both purposes.

The purple one my hubby bought me I also wear indoors as a blazer, as you've seen. But I've also worn it as a light coat outdoors.

The other one I have is the Gap drapey taupe leather jacket - it is very light and is strictly indoor wear.

These three jackets were purchased to be snug and although they do up, are tight with layers underneath. But I bought them knowing I would be wearing them as indoor toppers and undone 90% of the time that this didn't bother me.

So, to be honest, I can't imagine ever wearing a leather jacket (although *maybe* a very soft suede one might work) as indoor wear. I run too hot, but the main reason is that they are too restrictive of movement. I need more arm movement when I am in lab or at home than the leather jacket allows.

I can definitely fit a thin knit or lightweight blazer under all of my leather jackets, although they might be very tight when done up in front (I don't usually close my leather jacket though so I'm not worried about this, and I *can* still close them if need be). I bought all of them to fit very snugly through the body but they have stretched a little bit.

I am considering getting a leather VEST though for indoor wear!

ETA: Sometimes I swap toppers too for indoors and outdoors so that might also be an option. Like, I carry the blazer or sweater with me and just wear it at work after I've taken off the jacket.

In my recent Danier thread Sveta mentions that she layers UNDER one of her leather jackets, i.e. she wears a jacket beneath it.

Then, Claire mentioned in Makrame's thread that Angie layers OVER her leather jacket, i.e. wears a coat over top.

I'm looking for my first leather jacket now.

The ones I tried in store could NEVER have been layered under in the way Sveta describes. The SA told me that they were supposed to fit very snug. I could fit a long sleeved shirt, maybe a thin knit underneath. I can't imagine wearing a blazer underneath.

Thing is? One of those jackets was EXACTLY the jacket that Sveta wears with a jacket underneath!! What's up?

Meanwhile, in my imagination, I had planned to wear my new leather jacket like a blazer. I happily layer OVER my blazers with my trench or winter coat, just as Angie does. It never occurred to me not to.

However, with the jackets I tried on...while I didn't feel I could layer UNDER them successfully, I also wasn't sure I'd feel great with anything layered OVER them. They felt somehow too substantial for that. As if I'd have been all bulky. As if my arm movements would have been restricted.

So, what is going on here? Are these jackets just not the right weight for indoors? I looked at a few others in the store that might (arguably) have been considered thinner, more "indoor" type jackets. But I did not care for the styles or fit as much as I liked the ones I showed you. And to be honest, the difference in weight of the leather was not that great. It may have been nonexistent. In fact, what really seemed to differentiate the jackets was that instead of collars they had simple stand or mandarin collars so there was no extra overlapping fabric. Otherwise, they felt the same.

I would love your thoughts on this and your experiences, oh, leather experts!
