I would try one of the Amish leather goods makers here in the States. Not only is the quality excellent, they actually have some nice looking styles. And I bet they can tell you where they source their leather.

I know there are a few of those brands that tells you where they source the leather from, and it’s really keeping an eye out, to filter the many brands out there.

I got my bag from Silent Goods. It’s a UK brand. I first found them on a Kickstarter campaign. They actually tell you where everything is source from, including the zipper and thread.
https://silentgoods.com/pages/materials
In this case, the hide sourced from and tanning process took place in Sweden.

Not a lot of choices in the design, but I like its simplistic look and soft leather. I have it over a year now, and it’s still doing great.

There is a company in NZ called New Zealand Light Leathers which gets its hides here and supplies some luxury brands- it may be the company mentioned in Bijou’s link above. Some NZ made bags by a young Kiwi woman also use that leather- brand is Yu Mei.

Thank you, kkards, JAileen, rebekahphoto and Runcarla! Carla, I owned a wallet from that company several years ago and loved the many pockets and colours. My mum loved it too, so much that I gave it to her. Thanks for the tips!

One way to avoid supporting business in countries you don’t want to support is to buy used. I’ve bought a number of vintage Coach items used. Years ago their leather was more durable and you can wash the bags and wallets! You might be able to find things in thrift stores. If not, I’ve bought things on Etsy.

There are lots of non leather options that are professional....try MZ Wallace or lo and sons. Custom design an LLBean boat bag.

If you are still look for leather Cuyana feels like the kind of company that can tell you were it’s leather comes from. And everlane claims transparency so I’d try there as well

Ophelia, thank you! That book sounds hopeful, I will definitely read. It’s a struggle for me to pair my love of quality fashion with all the damage it creates. I work in a job where appearance is paramount. I experimented this summer with using some fun branded canvas totes, thinking they could pass as fashion-forward, but got professionalism shamed. Thank goodness I am retiring in a few years!

Bijou, thank you for that link! Like you, I am concerned about animal welfare, so I am grateful for your comment. There are so many products on my no buy list these days, and the hardest thing was parting ways with the only lip balm that kept lip damage from my skin trouble in check. But they abandoned their cruelty-free stance to enter the Chinese market—claiming they wanted to help Chinese consumers instead of taking a stand to force that government to abandon their draconian testing requirements.
I’m getting off my soapbox now, I realise it’s a downer on the forum. Thank you all for your advice and suggestions, they are very much appreciated.

Have you read Loren Eisley’s “The Star Thrower”?
One person —does—make a difference. :)
ETA if sustainability is a concern, look into the pollution generated by the leather tanning industry.

Thank you, Angie and Synne!
Synne, the ARV bags are absolutely stunning, exactly my style! https://www.arvdesign.no/blogs.....ige-vesken I will have to dig into finding a way to translate the site and see if they ship overseas. I absolutely loved shopping in Norway when I visited last year. Your attention to detail and quality are amazing.

Angie, you are wise, and confirm what I hear from the brands I reached out to. The bag I am trying to replace is my summer work tote so I have time to consider my options. I am troubled by what’s happening in the Amazon and the clearance is for food as well as leather production. I’m just one consumer, so when I take a stand it makes zero difference in the world. But I am using the ease of digital contact to at least alert my favourite brands about the issues on my radar.

Aliona - I have heard good things about this company Issara who make leather bags that are meant to last a long time. I think leather is likely to have less environmental impact that plastic, but I am concerned about animal welfare.
https://issara.co/our-leather/

Aliona, I have no satisfactory answers to your questions. It’s very, very tricky business finding out where leather came from, and if the information is even accurate. I saw a National Geographic talk a few years ago that documented the tanning source in India of 90% of the world’s leather.

My suggestion is to go with faux leather or another fabric - which also has its disadvantages. There is no easy solution. Simply one that is good enough for you at the time, and the lesser of the evils that are most important to you.

Seeking the wisdom of the forum: I’m trying to avoid buying goods made with leather from a couple of countries. Can anyone tell me if there’s a way to find out leather source on clothing items and accessories? For bags and small leather goods, I’ve had a hard time getting info beyond the country of manufacture, sometimes even customer service people don’t know.

I experimented with vegan leather goods, but my non-leather items just haven’t lasted and ultimately feel more wasteful, especially given recent awareness around the problems with plastics. I’m trying to replace a 20-year-old bag and 6-year-old wallet that can no longer be mended or cleaned.

On another topic, I posted last year about my switch from cashmere to merino. Since then, I have concluded my cashmere experiment and actually found two brands I like. If anyone’s interested, I can do a separate post on what I learned. Thought I’d ask in advance as it will take a while to compile—and to read—so I won’t be upset if it’s not a topic of interest
