Sarah A, I love this idea! I haven't worn the coat much so it doesn't really need to be cleaned, it just needs to be de-odorized.

I will try the charcoal first and professional cleaning second.

I would get some activated charcoal (at the pet store for fish tank filters) and put the jacket in a tied closed plastic trash bag next to the opened container of activated charcoal (also in the bag, but not in contact with the leather) for about a week and eval if it is improved. Will cost you about $10, no damage/contact to the leather and may work wonders. (I learned of this trick after a handbag i ebayed without checking for "smokefree" in the description arrived smelling terribly, after a few weeks with the charcoal it worked wonders)

I had a leather jacket that smelled like cigarette smoke. The only thing that got that smell out was the professional leather dry cleaning. I don't know about your jacket's smell, though.

Love Isabel's suggestions about calling Danier or Nordstrom! I would recommend at least trying to clean it before giving it up.

April, I would email Danier customer care and ask if they have a suggestion.
They are everything leather.

Customer Service
2650 St. Clair Avenue West
Toronto ON, M6N 1M2
customerservice@danier.com

You may also want to call Nordstrom and ask who they recommend for leather cleaning and then call them.

Good luck. It is a beautiful coat.

Professional leather cleaning used to be very hard on the leather - it would make it very stiff and dry, as well as being very expensive. I'm assuming processes have changed and improved, but I would take it to the cleaner and ask how it's done.

I have this Marc New York leather jacket from Angie's 2012 NAS picks: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ma....._5OyFkb8SQ and I love it, but the leather has a musty scent.

It's been that way from the beginning (i.e., it's not the result of storing it in dampness or any mishap). At first I thought it was just a strong "new leather smell" and that it would fade, but that hasn't happened. I've hung it outside on breezy days, put it in the sun, I've misted it with Pure Ayre http://www.thepureayrestore.com/#home , I've spritzed the lining with my perfume, yet this heavy mustiness persists. Whatever hangs next to this jacket in the closet picks up the same scent.

My question is: will professional leather cleaning address this problem? Or must I give up on this coat? I don't know how leather cleaning works -- if it's just a surface "wipe down" I doubt it will help, but maybe it's more immersive than that?
