Okay, so I used the Promo Code that was now available and did a BIG order. I ordered the coat, it was now only 140€. I also ordered the puffer in #1 below - I had tried it in a regular size last year and it had some fit issues, now I've ordered the petite. Also ordered the corresponding down jacket, thought I'd try it for just 55€. And the wrap dress in #3, plus some shirts that were about 8€ each. I'll post a big thread with pictures when I get it all.

Sorry for taking so long to come back to this, I'm down with a cold. :(

Inge, I might have another look at Benetton next week. I've been there a while ago looking for a wool coat, but they hadn't gotten the winter stock yet.

Thanks Amy! I've seen that now there's the 30% off, on all orders until Monday. I'm definitely going to try it now, for this price. I might even order one of the other coats to try too. I'm going to have a look what they have.

Thanks Ornella! I agree that down would be nice to have for warmth and it seems to be the warmest option, but I never had one before and was alright. Not sure I really need it. I'm at Galeria Kaufhof at Alexanderplatz quite often, it's on my way to Uni. Didn't find anything there so far. It's true that they have a lot of coats, but a big chunk of them is too expensive for me and I haven't found one that was long enough. As for the LOGG shirt, I've seen that one online and it has 40% polyester content. Is yours the same? I don't really like polyester very much, but maybe it would be alright mixed with the cotton. CECIL is available at Galeria Kaufhof for example, so I've seen that. There's no K&L in Berlin. I know them, but they only have stores in south Germany. They have an online shop, but no free shipping either. As for the Vero Moda, I don't like this look at all. Even if it were flattering, but no. I guess I just have poison eye. ;)

Hi Astrid

I've just read your description of what kind of coat you need and I realise some of my finds may be ruled out automatically, but I'll post them in any case.

I also think that in order to get as warm as you want to be in Berlin winters some compromise might be worth considering - I think that down coats are the best choice for cold climates (what does Una say?), the whole principle being in the feathers making the better insulation as the wind gets worse. I don't think you can get that level of warmth from any otehr type of fillings, at least not in the longer sttyle of coats. The stitching is inevitable as that keeps feathers and down in the pockets in place. I agree the stitching in most cases is ridiculous, but there are still options out there. My requirements are similar to yours, smaller top and bigger bottom and I think it's very difficult to find that in the straighter cuts, which is what the long coats mostly are (e.g. Eddie Bauer one you linked - I can see it being tight over my hips and roomy at top). Therefore, some knee-length is a good option to consider too.

When I was buying my white puffer last year in July and expressed concern it might not be warm enough, Anna said her short down jacket was warmer than the longer poly filled one, which resolved the last doubts for me.

Btw, what about the department at Galeria Kaufhof at Alexander Platz which was full of down coats (ok, this was 3 years ago I'm recalling)? But, I still remember how upset I was that there was no time to browse it all, as it looked like there was every sort of coat imaginable there.

Anyway, today after the language classes I went for a little walk searching a gift for my Secret Santa's draw, and here are the findings from the new to me places. Also adding the tee shirt by LOGG similar to mine, which I mentioned on your other thread a few days ago.

#1 Vero Moda - a lot of stitching, but actually may work because the bottom part is wider. ETA: I just remembered, my sister has something similar from Zara (a few seasons old), and the jacket with that belt actually looks very pretty. She's got pear tendencies too. The belt seems to polish and offset those stitchings. Now that I think about this coat for you, it might really be worth a try.
#2 Cecil - short and to straight, but this is mostly to remind myself and you to perhaps check there as well.
#3 K&L - the stitching on this one does not look bad at all I think. The store seems to have very safe and perhaps too classic styles in general, but leave no retail stone unturned...

I wasn't going to click on this bc I have a bit of a poison eye for LE, but Astrid, the fit looks really good on you and a Squall in that length would be a workhorse through Berlin's winter.

200,-€ is brutal, but PPW of warmth during the ca. 8 weeks before a sale would start probably evens out paying full price.

Also: earlier today I got an email from Benetton announcing their mid-season sale (30% off). Not sure if this is only in Belgium, or the rest of Europe too. Perhaps it's worth a try checking them out as well, if you haven't already?

Thanks Claire! The old coat actually wasn't purple but quite a bright blue, the same as my jacket in #4. It's just different light. The eggplant should look nice one me, it's a good color. It's actually not only water resistant but waterproof too. I wore the jacket in rain and snow and was dry. And you can just throw it in the washing machine! It's definitely a practical purchase, provided the new cut works out.

The purple from the one you returned looks very pretty on you. The purple on the website looks a bit darker, more like an eggplant (on my screen). If you are okay with having short and long versions of the same thing, in similar colors, I think it's a good purchase.

This coat ticks the boxes of: not down, not black or brown and fits you properly in the length and waist (and sleeves too, assuming they addressed that concern with the redesign). And it's probably at least water resistant, right? Also you kind of know what you're getting as opposed to any other coat you might order.

I just don't want you to settle if this coat doesn't make your heart sing. And I also don't want you to freeze to death while you are still looking. It's a tough call!

Thanks Rachylou. You're right of course.

Thanks Day Vies! Good to hear you have it and it works for you. I really like the jacket, I guess the coat would be similar.

Jaileen, that's the US site with the promo code. The German one doesn't have it, but if I order on the US size there's so much shipping and taxes I'd probably pay more in the end. And no, I don't have a car. I walk and take public transport.

Thanks Scarlet! I did have my black coat until the middle of last winter, so I didn't have to go without one all this time. But I agree that it's more comfortable with a coat and not just the jacket. I think I might try it. I can always return and 4€ for shipping wouldn't be that much money lost.

How you get through the winter without a long coat I just don't know. You must be robust. I don't think it's a duplication and it is probably as warm as you can get without being a puffer. I doubt the sale code will work for international shipping, but it is sure worth a try! It's also worth calling and asking for the discount. U.S. companies are usually much more flexible in this kind of customer service thing in my experience.

Astrid, Is LE not showing a sale for you right now? Because on my screen it says 30% off everything. The code is FRIENDLY and the pin is 3055. Try it and see if it works. 30% is a lot!

I'm sure the long coat fills a different hole for you, and would be especially nice if your commute is not in a car (walking or waiting for a bus). I bought the shorter parka last year, with thinsulate, and ended up donating it. It was nice and warm but too stiff to be comfortable. I assume you didn 't get that one!

Coat twins! That is my exact coat in purple. I got it because I wanted to be warm and dry. I love how it keeps out the wind (even with a skirt on!) A coat is not a duplicate when it's longer or shorter. Coats serve different functions at different lengths (said the woman who can't stop buying new coats).

Well, I do want to say there is no point in getting a coat after you need it. If you freeze all winter waiting for a sale, I think that might get into penny wise and pound foolish.

Thanks Ornella! Yes, I've been searching for for one the last three years, more or less since I've been reading YLF. I did have an old black one that needed replacing in the beginning, but this one got purged last winter because it just wasn't wearable any longer.

I want one that's knee length or slightly longer. Fit is a problem though, because on top I'd really need petite fit for it to sit right and that's not available anywhere. So too long sleeves/too low waist etc. are always a problem. No black or brown, but I'd take black if the rest is just right. A hood would be useful, but I don't need it at all costs. Somewhat waterproof would be great. I know that everyone is a fan of down coats for winter, but I don't like the look of most of them. I'm just not a fan of all the quilting I guess. And all the down coats I've seen so far IRL didn't look very robust.

I've looked in the usual stores, yes. Also tried P&C, but they might have gotten some new stuff in the meantime. As for a long puffer, Eddie Bauer has one with a hood, it should be well over knee length on you. Definitely too long for me, but it might work with your heigth.

Astrid, I am not against more coats because in your climate you need it. I am also not necessarily against having the second blue coat, but this one is both too casual and expensive. I'd say pass and wait for another one. I didn't know you're in the market for the coat, I'll keep an eye for you too. I am searching for long (below the knee long) down coat possibly with the hood - in case you come across one :-) Btw, what exactly are you after in terms of style/needs, colour, length? I guess down coat would be best.

I assume you'e tried the places like Esprit, Mexx, or department stores - my small P&C seems to always have good selection. Also, the new stock keeps coming in at regular intervals, you just need to be wait... It will appear, I am sure.

Worth a try, then. Or maybe it will go on sale soon. Perhaps it is worth a quick phone call. A SA might let you know..

Thanks Suz. Shipping is 3,95€ and returns are free. You really summed up how I'm feeling. I'm not in love with it, but I really haven't seen anything so far that could have worked. I'd say this one is comparable to shopping the "outdoor" brands, just that those are more expensive and don't fit me (all cut very straight). I'd say I have very few occasion where this would be too casual. If I searched for something dressier it would be for me, not because I had occassions where I needed it.

Thanks Amiable!

I really like the purple And it doesn't seem like duplication to me either - because they would have different functions in your wardrobe.

Astrid, do you have to pay shipping charges both ways if you order it to try and decide not to keep?

It sounds as if you are not in love with it, just feeling (understandably) worried and a bit desperate for a real coat after all this searching. Yet it might come and look and feel much better than you remember, and so it could be worth a try. I get what you are saying.

It doesn't feel like a duplication to me but it does feel similar in level of dressiness to the other one, so if it were me I would be searching for one that filled a slightly different hole. But then my life involves a lot of variety of occasions, so that's maybe different from yours.

Yes, exactly! The long coat went back because the arms were too tight, but the reviews say they fixed that. I kept the shorter one because it didn't have this issue. The one in #4 would be good enough if I decided to wait for the sale, but with the longer coat I definitely have more outfit options, especially because it's long enough for skirts.

Astrid - just to clarify you have the blue jacket in photo 4 but tried the long jacket last year in 1-3?
If yes, then I do not feel that is duplicating at all. A long coat is essential in my opinion. Cold and gusty days!
Purple sounds wonderful. I am unsure about waiting for the sale. If you need it now then it might be prudent to order it.

I'm still looking for a longer coat and I was thinking about ordering the LE coat that I already tried last year when it was on sale. The one last year had too tight arms, but the newest review says they changed the cut and the arms are now wider.

I already have a jacket from the same range that I wore last winter and it kept me warm enough. I had ordered that one on a big sale and was very happy I had something to wear, even if it wasn't a coat. That one is my only winter option at the moment btw.

I'm not sure, do you think the getting the coat would be duplicating? Of course it's quite expensive now and would probably go on sale in February or so, same as last year.

http://www.landsend.de/de_DE/S.....23800.html

I like the purple best, the jacket I have is blue.

#1-3 Pics from last year. I lost some weight since then, so it might fit a bit differently.

#4 The jacket. Here's what I looked like all winter - jeans tucked into boots and the jacket.

Thoughts?
