A great way to assess your closet. When I've done this in the past, I found it helpful to identify how much clothing I needed in my wardrobe to have enough variety to keep me happy. Then I could 1 in 1 out new additions so I do not end up with wardrobe creep.

What a great way to track - I love a visual! I am mostly a mood editor, but something like this would appeal to me too.

I like your process. Thanks for sharing it. I don't really assess my wardrobe systematically. I have a mental list of things I would like to find, to make outfits, or things in my wardrobe that need something I don't have. Then when I come across something that seems useful in those ways, I get it. Other times, I just really like something and get it. I have culled out quite a lot in the past year, and my wardrobe is now right at the edge of feeling too big for me. I think I could edit out quite a bit more.

I love the idea of moving the special occasion/only worn occasionally items to an auxiliary closet. And yay for having things you love and work for your lifestyle.

I think it's a great way to assess your closet -- it makes sense to take it easy and just take a look, without judgement.

And see, I knew those Carys sweaters were workhorses for you! You needed every one. I can totally see why. The style works for you and the colour/ patterns provide interest on the cold days and they keep you warm! Because they are patterned and mostly vibrant they are not what Angie calls essentials, but they are workhorse items.

Well done, you may call it a lazy way but I thinks its a great way to see how well your wardrobe is functioning for you. You're fortunate to have the space to do this.
I had quite an active shopping year last year as well, but the new items I added, I really like and wear. I too, have a few skinnier pants stored away currently, because they may be back in circulation as trends change. I did donate quite a few older items recently but I've never gone the route of selling anything online.
Good luck with your online sales.

This makes seasonal sense! Such an interesting excercise.

I have handled the “saw many cute things this weekend” temptation better every year. My main success with it has been using the “Art Gallery” method that I read about in Recovering Shopaholic originally- looking at the lovely things but imagining they are hanging in an art gallery and are just for looking at not owning. In my case the desire to own is tempered by thinking about the things I was desperate to own previously that still don’t have #30 wears, like what I call my Mondrian top- the bright colours I love, beautiful silk. Only worn 9 times since bought 2 years ago.

I first did this last year, in March. This time around I did it only for the month of January. I do it to discover what is left unworn in my closet, and then assess those things for editting. When I did this in 2024, I weeded out 38 things (!!), plus lots of basics like leggings and base layers.

This year I wore whatever appealed to me in the moment, and then hung it up on the rail. It was very cold most of the month, so obviously it is mostly sweaters and pants. But I wasn't trying to wear everything or discover new outfits.

Here is the rail, and all the Carys sweaters! And then what is left in my closet. This is mostly plain t-shirts and turtlenecks that get worn under other things, but also striped and animal print tops, which I was unaccountably uninterested in this year. Also unworn, pants that need to be hemmed, cropped or skinny pants, and a couple of pairs that are always my second choice.

No great epiphanies this year, except seeing that the pants/tops side of the closet is too crowded. The other side of the closet is things that get worn occasionally; dresses, jackets, long cardigans. Those items will mostly get moved to the guest room so I have more room for the things I wear every day. Two pairs of very skinny pants and a couple of sweaters will be donated. Three nicer items were put on eBay with my fingers crossed.

What I really learned, I already knew. I bought way too much last year and can only justify a few purchases this year, and hopefully more thrifted than new. I saw many cute things at Loft this weekend, so that is a real challenge! On the other hand, I have a lot of things that I love and suit my current lifestyle. I can also rearrange my closet to suit what I wear often. This is a luxury of space.

Thanks for reading! I'm always curious to see how you all assess your wardrobe and make editing or purchasing decisions!
