Thank you all for your kind words. I have been looking in vain for the picture I saw on line that inspired this outfit. I have not been successful. So I apologize -- but I think you get the general idea. Plain neutral dress sans the sleeves added to a wild and crazy long sleeved print that makes you question your taste and sanity.

Alaska Girl -- lumpy and uncomfortable are definitely words I would have used if I'd thought of them when I wrote my commentary. I had to laugh because it's SO true.

What a great idea--that is a truly successful combination. The black dress is the perfect foil for the color and pattern, and the thin knit of the top keeps it streamlined and ladylike.

I gotta get to work on some livelier outfits....

I had to log back in to tell you I ADORE this look on you. My fave outfit you've posted. I have never liked the sheath dress over shirt look (too mom-in-a-jumper), but this - THIS - is beyond fab. The colors in that top! And the sleek look of it all!

I laughed out loud at your description of layering experience as "sweaty, tired and dissatisfied" To that I would add "lumpy and uncomfortable" in my case, but you have made me reconsider!

Lovely layered look. I run on team cold and would be lost without my layers especially in colder months. Then I sport layers you see (most often blazers with a knit and tank underneath) and layers you don't see (thermals under trousers or jeans are a must everyday for me).

Radiant and beautiful! You have totally inspired me to get my black sheath out that I've only worn um, 1 or2 times. I know I don't have a layering t as fab as yours, but even if I have to buy something it's less expensive than a whole outfit. Thank you!

One thought on how you could make this outfit even better. Do you have a longer necklace you could add? I think it could break up the dress a little. Does that make sense?

Oh, I should mention, too that the brown boots are brilliant! It complements the top and keeps the outfit from looking all dressy with a t-shirt underneath.

That's gorgeous!! I love how the burgundy in the sleeves ties in with the boots (terrific boots, by the way) and the simplicity of the dress is a foil for all that. The necklace adds an extra pop.

This is one of my favourite ways to layer, too. I have simple black sheath dress that I do this with, or at least a slightly different version...I have been wearing mine with a plain T, and then a scarf for the "pop." That's also because I don't have a lot of necklaces (scarves serve as my necklaces in winter). But I like this idea a LOT and now will be looking out for some brighter, patterned Ts.

I am not a big fan of layering. I love it on other people – on myself however that is a different story. I have frequently emerged from the experienced tired, sweaty and dissatisfied.

I was inspired about a month ago with the idea of “winterizing” summer dresses by adding tights and long sleeves and possibly a jacket or cardigan. I really fell for the idea of taking a wildly printed long-sleeve tee and wearing a plain (all-season) sleeveless dress over it – leaving only the sleeves for pop and personality. I am all about pop and personalty especially if I can take it to work. So while I had time this past weekend, I put some outfits together.

Today’s creation consists of my favorite patterned t-shirt: a Simply Vera floral tee. The colors are wild. Bottle green, aqua, and sunset orange, all meet and mingle on a burgundy background.
The sheath dress is a black Calvin Klein number.

I played around with the accessories and settled on a turquoise necklace, a black leather sash for a belt and mid-calf burgundy boots.

It’s not a super complicated layered outfit but I love the formula. Normally I would wear some plain-jane cardigan over this dress. Adding bulk is my biggest fear when it comes to layering. I’m glad I tried this out because it’s a fun outfit, yet toned down enough to wear to work.

What do you think? What successes have you had with layering?
