Fashintern I have found some turtlenecks described as a base for layering have very loose necks, so it's pretty hit or miss. Thanks for the suggestions!

I have a couple of bodysuits with T-necks that I think could work for you. The labels say "Monteray Bay", which I can't find online (but there are plenty of links to reptiles at a certain aquarium in Cali, lol). I think I picked them up at the Rack, so I searched Nordstrom's website for that brand. I didn't find them, but there are quite a few T-neck ls T-shirts that might work for you.

I have a "normal" (not bodysuit) long-sleeved T-neck that is pretty much all stretch. Label says Soft Surroundings.

I don't have this one, but it's described as a base for layering, so I would think it'd be a tight neck. I have other things from here that are good quality and lasted a long time. https://wintersilks.blair.com/...../86858.uts

Thank you. BrieN. For pointing out the Philosophy tops at the Rack. I love nylon rich fabrics for their strength and easy care and will look for these. The only sizes avalable online are L, M, and XL. I need smaller sizes but maybe they will be availble in store.

JCrew has some nice thin cotton turtlenecks that I wear as layering.
I have the same issue as you with itchy turtlenecks and also wear thin layering turtlenecks under them.

Several years ago, an Angie pick for an essential t- neck was a top offered by Express. They were very inexpensive on sale. I still wear them and the neck has not stretched out. I think the fabric is rayon or a rayon blend.
Have you tried Old Navy? I got a thin t- neck there to wear under an itchy wool sweater a few years ago. It has held up well.

I have a couple from Club Monaco that are very tight in the neck and are slim fitting in the torso. They are called the Julie turtleneck. The ones I have ran really small. I'm not sure if they changed the sizing for the newer ones.

I just noticed that Everlane's pima turtlenecks have a neck that looks less drapey than some. Perhaps it'll work? It's hard to tell - it's not really tight per se. It's almost more of a mock neck but that could be good for layering.

BrieN, that's a great suggestion, I'll take a look at them, thanks! I've had a few Philosopy sweaters and they are a great value for the price.

Jessikams, thanks, I'll take a look at Muji. As I said earlier I've got a few from Uniqlo in the heavier fleece fabric, and the necks are a bit too loose, but it's ok because I only wear these for outdoor walks where I have lots of other layers around my neck so the looseness does not matter.

Like you I always wear a layer under sweaters, so I use cotton turtlenecks a lot. And I share your preference for a nice high “standing collar” rather than the more casual folded version. Mine are currently all from Uniqlo and Muji. Due to Asian sizing they tend to run small, so they may fit your slim neck.

Hi Chris - I'm chiming in first to commiserate with fabric sensitivities. I get it. Wool, cashmere, acrylic, etc I can't bear to wear even with a turtleneck or other base layer. It can be a real challenge to dress warmly when those are off the table!

I wanted to mention a Philosophy mock neck turtleneck that I've purchased in multiple colors this winter from Nordstrom Rack. It's warm and not itchy at all. It's essentially a light sweater, but I've been wearing them under longer cardigans and moto jackets and have actually been WARM at work! They are wearing beautifully. I do dry them on the rack (not the dryer) as one of the reviews mention that they shrink. I haven't experienced any shrinkage with my air dried ones. I purchased a couple for my daughters (which they've been wearing a lot). They have thin necks and the neck of the sweater looks tidy.

I know it's not exactly what you were asking for but I thought they'd be of interest. At $16, they have been such a good purchase. They come in Petite sizes too.

Thanks bj111, but I can't wear merino or cashmere right next to my skin, it's itchy and uncomfortable.

Thanks DonnaF, that sounds PERFECT! I'll have to scrounge around and see what I can find.

THanks MsMaven, I'll have to look more at halogen, which is what DonnaF's suggestin was.

Cee, hmm I suppose I could look at Target, although I never shop there for much of anything. Will definitely consider it.

Brooklyn thanks, I'll give peruvian connection a look! And thanks for that tip about snaps, I'll keep it in mind! You must have been sending me "alteration vibes" because I just figured out I could take in the back seam permanently on some of them that I only wear under other things. There would be a little pleat at the bottom of the collar in the back but that would be better than the loose floppy look.

Canada yes I could take a look at boy's sizes...good idea although I don't expect a large boy would have a very thin neck, but it's worth a try!

Another option - for any that you already have and are starting to sag: you can sew snaps on the back of the neck and press them together to take up the extra slack. I’ve done it with one of mine and it works fine if your hair is long enough to cover the back of the neckline.

You might try Peruvian Connection. I have the “extreme T-neck” in rust and in aubergine. It’s cotton with a little Lycra. The neck doesn’t sag but it’s very long ie extreme (lots of ruching). Also quite long in the body. They also have a classic T-neck, which is 100% cotton. I haven’t tried that but it could be worth a try.

I read you regarding loose collared turtlenecks ( looks hard at Evil Cowlneck playing with it's butterfly knife leaving multiple pockmarks on my coffee table ) and any woollen sweater ( esp. one with a t-neck collar ) that's slightly itchy has to have one underneath otherwise it'll drive me nuts !

Target used to sell dirt cheap cotton/lyrca skivvies that were perfect for that purpose, but that was some time ago.

This ribbed turtleneck is NOT cotton but I can attest that the neck is pretty tight. Reviewers complain that they had a hard time getting it over their head. It also comes in solid colors and Petites. Dunno if there's much selection left or if it might be easier to find at the Rack.

I just checked out Uniqlo. All their turtlenecks are merino or cashmere (I don't find either comfortable next to my skin), heattech which I already have and is too thick to put under a light sweater, or cotton, where the one choice has a neck that looks too big on the model. Hmm..

Thanks nemosmom, I'll have to take a look at Zara, although their clothes usually come nowhere near fitting me right.

Thanks Taylor. I used to be a Costco member until a few years ago when a BJ's opened near me so I switched allegiance

Ginger, interesting about LE. I bought two different models from LE in late Nov of last year and both have necks that are way too big.

Jaileen, the one you have sounds like it's neck is not all that snug....."drapey" sounds like "not snug" to me :-).

Suz, I may just try Boden. Their petite sizing was too small for me in knit dresses with some stretch, so I'd probably try the regular sizing in turtlenecks. I've tried rib knits vs. "flat" knits and the neck fit are still all over the place. Modal would be fine, I'm not wedded to cotton. I do sometimes do the scarf thing you suggested, with a crewneck underlayer, it works well, but then I get tired of wearing scarves all the time Hadn't thought of a dickey, that's a good idea, although I expect they might be loose too, wouldn't know until I tried them. And I bet you are right about uniqlo having other styles I could look at besides the fleece ones I already have. Great suggestions!

Years ago I had some Land's End plain cotton ones with a bit of stretch that worked (even though I'm usually sized out at Land's End) -- but it was so long ago I'm sure they don't make the same style any more. This is always the issue, right?

I was going to say Boden -- I have the one Angie has and it is thicker than you might want as a layering piece but beautifully made. Also, don't give up on petite sizing there too quickly for a knit top (vs. a dress or similar). Knits stretch and accommodate.

These turtlenecks are also rib knits which seems stretchier and more able to "snap back." The necks are not scrunched, though -- they are folded. But looking for rib knits might be a good route.

You might also consider modal varieties. The ones below vary in priciness (and brand) but provide nice insulation as layering pieces and they are scrunch necks with slim enough necks so that they are not bunchy. (I know just what you mean.)

For example -- I tried Uniglo's and found them too loose/ bunchy. But I think perhaps there are different versions, so it might be worth a look.

Finally -- can you consider a completely different option? How about a regular crew neck thermal underlayer with a dickie and/or a scarf? That is what I often do -- I'll wear one scarf indoors and another over/ with my coat for the outerlayer.

I wore a turtleneck the other day with a super tall neck (7 inches!). It’s not cotton, it’s rayon and spandex. But it’s very drapey. The label says Investment Essentials. Apparently it’s from Dillards. It was nice under a wool sweater.

I got a couple of layering turtlenecks at Lands End a couple years ago; the necks were quite slender. I had trouble getting the white one on without smearing makeup all over the inside.

I’m with you on the tight necks. I am always on the hunt because I wear turtlenecks year round. The sleeveless in the summer and a variety of others for layering and warmth in the winter.
The last one I bought ...believe it or not ...Costco . They come in a 2 pk. One black one white . They are slim fit and perfect for layering . They are nice and long so no bunching around the waist , have a bit of stretch and a nice snug neck .

I have a few great ones from Zara (Zara Knit is the name on the label) that are 70% viscose and 30% nylon. They are a few years old, so I'm not sure if Zara has them again this year. Maybe you can find the same blend in a different brand.

These are snug on my giraffe-like neck and hold up really well (don't put them in the dryer). They don't slip down at all.
