I know its not what you mentioned, but have you thought of using lace camis? I wear cardis a *lot* and just love to wear them underneath....really my first choice in layering tops...they come in different fabrics, as you know, but almost all are soft and stretchy....and there are so many styles! just a thought

Actually, that's really helpful Vix. It tells me that these might be good layering shirts for work but probably not for my MOTG-life because that requires something that can withstand more wear and tear. Thank you!

I experimented handwashing one, but noticed some loss in length. Decided to handwash again and stretch them gently while drying (just clipped an empty skirt hanger to the bottom of the shirt) and it reverted.

Sorry for the ambivalent response!

Malina - I think that's the kind of top I'm looking for - we have a Marshalls; I might go check it out today. Less than $20 would be good too.

Vix - I hadn't thought of the Classiques line, probably because I've only seen it online and not in person. I have a number of Sweet Pea tops that I really like, but some of the prints just aren't for me anymore, and I haven't found any new ones that I love. Something similar - and less itchy - would be perfect. Do you find that the Classiques tops can be handwashed (even though they say dry clean only)? I wouldn't mind spending a bit more if I don't have to add dry cleaning on top of the initial price and I knew that it would last a bit longer.

Thank you for the suggestions!

ETA: Mo's post reminded me that I often see substantial-weight tops by Max Studio and Nine West at our local Marshalls/TJMaxx.

Hi Crwilson --

Just to clarify -- you say you want knits but *don't* want sweaters, right?

[I wear a lot of flat silk knit shells and short-sleeve sweaters under jackets/cardigans and find they hold up a lot better than jersey knits.]

If I'm understanding you correctly, my other underlayer go-to are silk mesh knit tops or silk jersey blends from Nordstrom's Classique line. I admit to stalking the sale priced ones -- they aren't cheap-cheap, but IME they really do wear well/last.

The material clings under the bust and skim's one's sides so there's no boxiness, and the print ones are quite forgiving to any less than flat spots. I've seen them in sleeveless, s/s, and bracelet length.

Example: http://tinyurl.com/classiquesknittop

[The Sweet Pea brand ones are similiar, but a little scratchy for my princess/pea'd self...however they may be another option for you.]

I found jersey knit tops to work well. A fave of mine is a dark berry by Cable & Gauge from Ross and I recently found a violet Michael Kors at TJ Maxx. The blends with modal are my favorite. Pics aren't the greatest - sorry. They were vacation shots. Actually the blue is 30 minutes before we got on our bikes for my spectacular fall on Valentine's lol.

ETA: neither of these cost more than $20. Ross, TJ Maxx and Marshall's usually all have a ton of this type of top to choose from.

I have a serious hole in my closet, which is tops to wear under jackets and cardigans, or even on their own. The problem is that I need something generally casual, but layering tees don't work. I'm not entirely sure why they don't work except that all things that are labeled a tee make me look like a box. I'm sure it's because of my large bust. Anyway, I don't want woven shirts or blouses; I want something that is stretchy, soft, and works a whole lot like a layering tee (i.e. durable, machine washable, no ironing, no sweaters). I'd like some solid colors, though I'm not entirely opposed to prints. Oh, and of course, I'd prefer not to spend a huge amount of money since they'll be knits and won't last that long relatively speaking. Any suggestions?
