Thanks all. After going around in a few circles I ended up order two modal tops from Banana Republic(navy and warm pink) via the finds from Inge above. Also some exercise leggings from Athleta and a boat neck from Gap.

I loved the Massimo Dutti but they were a bit more expensive and I had problems with an overseas credit card - even though I have a US address. I loved the Vince Suz but they were out of stock. I also loved the Flower one Bijou but they don't deliver to NZ. I looked at the Halogen but dropped shoulders I am staying away from at the moment, I loved the neckline though.

Thanks for everyones help (and Brooklyn who contacted me as well) - I hope they work as I am a sucker for adding new statement pieces and not having the supporting acts to make them work.

You're very welcome, Sally!
Bonnie, Massimo Dutti is definitely worth a look.
Joy - You make me smile:-)
Suz - I love how the Vince tee looks on you and our other Fabbers. And I'm also eyeing those BR elbow-length silk cashmere pullovers, they come in such good colours!-)

Hi Sally, I bought this top from Flower (in black and merlot) because I liked the sleeves and I also like the neckline, almost a turtleneck. It layers beautifully under jackets and is fun on its own, due to the sleeve detail. Also because it sits a little away from the body, it is good with jeans, no muffin situation happening. I know that this would not be for everyone, but the feel of the knit is very soft and comfortable.

Sally, I have a couple of options to suggest.

The Vince modal tops are expensive -- unless you can find them on sale (which I did, when I bought) -- but wow, have they been worth it. I really hesitated before pulling the trigger on these, but seeing them on various forum members from Vicki to Jeneva convinced me that they are almost universally flattering. Mine are now four years old and still going strong -- I wash on delicate and air dry. The modal is higher quality than other modal I have seen/ tried. I have a navy and a white, but the top also comes in black. There is a lot of length both in the body and the sleeve. Something about the neckline makes them quite elegant, even if you have to take your jacket off.

BR's modal tees also look like they might be a good bet, although the cut is not quite as elegant.

Depending on your tolerance/ need for warmth, I also found the BR Merino Tees offered this type of versatility. Currently, they have one with a scalloped neck (might be too prissy -- not sure) but it comes in a lot of colours and is on sale! They also have a cashmere silk blend in some colours -- the one I showed has short sleeves but there seems to be a long sleeve version.

I'm looking for layering tees, too, so I'm glad you asked that question. Inge is a super shopper and will have some great choices for you. I'm really liking the Massimo Dutti.

Some lovely colours there, just off to the office (light wool or merino could work for at least one of them :))

Here's a tee from J.Crew in denim blue (not an easy to find colour in a tee apparently).

Would a lightweight wool (blend) also work, Sally, or is that going to be too warm? I was thinking of J.Crew's cashmere tees, they are fitted, and the colour selection can't be beat.

Massimo Dutti (they ship to Australia) is always worth a look too. They often have natural materials and more classic (fitted) styles. The white/ivory tops below come in navy and/or black but the pics are showing the light versions (site is acting up, I will tell Greg).

A few more options below.

And I love a bateau neckline a lot too, high five!

Hi Sally,

I immediately thought of the Halogen bateau neck top that was a recent Angie pick. I bought it myself and can confirm that it's a great fit, lovely material + the neckline also works well on a larger bust.

I'll have a look around for other options.

P.S. Love the sound of your green leather jacket and the kimono jacket

Hi lovely forum friends,

I am in need of a couple of layering tops and would purchase online from the USA to get the colour range. They need to be fitting but ideally not ride up (some length). Ideally I would like three - one black, one pink (of a warm but not too bright) and maybe one in navy or denim blue. Long sleeve, and open on necklines. True essentials.

I want to wear them with either jeans or black pants and over the top of them I will wear a statement sweater, or maybe a leather jacket. Ideally they would be tops that could be worn alone but the intention is that they become workhorses that allow me to wear these new statements, a green leather jacket, my kimono jacket etc...

I have purchased two new sweaters which are fun statements (it is till too warm to wear them yet - we are getting the remnants of Cyclone Debbie here so it is very warm and wet - not like what Australia got though).

I looked at Uniqlo but they are not set up for international shipping. I looked at Nordstrum briefly and also Gap. I have a US postal address that I can use for free shipping to there, and then pay for the postage on to NZ.

I would prefer mostly natural fibres ideally - and something that is nice to wear next to my skin during transition seasons and winter.

Recommendations would be appreciated:)

ETA This is Sally/Kiwigal. For a while I have wanted to change my username because I really don't call myself a girl or a gal, I see myself as a woman. Since there is another Sally (also from NZ) it is easier to be different to her. So in the end I have shortened it to Sal!!
