I see.. you kind of have the same problem that I have in winter, bellow zero outside and above 68 inside.
I will think about my own layering formulas also. Will let you know if there is a breakthrough :)

Jenn, my climate is yours, at least in fall/spring. 30-40 swings are really hard to dress for! Mine isn't here yet; it's been a typical late summer low 70s to mid-90s for a month. But I'll be doing this dance through much of October and November.

Aside: Are those eShakti dresses? Because, LOVE.

Except that I wear mostly skirts and dresses, what you've done here is actually how I dress most of the year because of office A/C.

Short-sleeve Dress or top/skirt + jacket or cardigan + necklace
(scarf is just one more layer to take off in the 100-110 degree parking lot)

Last fall I hit a really happy spot by adding tights under dresses, or doing short dresses/long tunics with leggings; I also added back scarves. Exposed ankles when I wore heels or flats kept the between-seasons feel. I also played with sheers and 3/4 sleeves which ordinarily would be too cold for A/C and too hot outside. This works for me because my legs don't feel the cold or heat as much as my arms do. Also, I have a lot of variety in my jacket and cardigan capsule, because I spend so much time in them.

If the morning was too cool for the topper (often, because I'm cold-natured), I just added another layer. When I'm already carrying one layer out in the afternoon, a second one isn't that big a deal. Everyone else is either carrying the same, or was the silly person shivering in the brisk north wind before dawn. ;)

The silk blouse is another good idea, and one that I'm just starting to do.

I don't know if this helps any! But I wanted to share that you're not alone. And I, too, would rather be warm in the afternoon than cold in the morning. ;)

Brooklyn - I like the light cotton sweater solution too. I think it could work for me with a pullover over a tank, but I know it works with my black cardigan, which is also cotton. I'm beginning to think I like the idea of wool more than the actuality of it, but that could just be because we had a mild winter last year and I've forgotten how necessary warm layers can be.

Thanks, Diane! Yesterday's temperature swings weren't even all that unusual! When people ask me what to pack for Colorado, my answer is always "layers, lip balm, and a water bottle." It's the joys of altitude.

cjh - Sweetest comment ever! Thank you.

Word Lily - I think you're the only person to pick out my personal favorite, which was #6. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it felt like the outfit with the least artifice to me.

My faves: 2, 3, 6, 10, and 14. (I love the scarf with the tank, the plaid shirt tied at your waist, the sweater of course, and in 14 I don't think it's a specific part that draws me.)

We have to have some go-tos to survive those wild temperature swings, great work!

Wow, I can't believe temperatures could go from 11 to 33 in one day! No wonder you need to seek stylish solutions! I think you've done great too Jenn. I really like the chambray shirt and denim jacket as a top layering piece and you look fab in the two dresses. Awesome plaid pants too. In fact I think the plaid pants outfit is probably my favourite. A big shout out too for #1,#2, #4, #11 and #12

My faves are 2, 10, 12 and 14.
This is something I struggle with too. My usual approach on an at home day is to wear a light weight cotton sweater over a short sleeve tee or tank with jeans. Because it is cotton I can wear it directly against my skin and it doesn't cause me to overheat too much when it gets warmer. (But I often end up tying it around my waist.) I also do the vest thing. Wear the vest in the morning or late evening and ditch it in the warm part of the day. But Unfortunately you can't tie it around your waist.

Great job adding layers, Jenn! It's nice to know I'm not the only one struggling with dressing for cooler mornings and evenings and hot days. I like that you are using fall colors/clothes....seasonally correct and not confusing.

I've had a harder time moving away from some of my summer pieces because it just seems so sunny and hot to wear fall clothes but seeing your examples makes me see it is doable and probably not so seasonally confusing! Thanks!

celia - In all honesty, I mostly want the layers for practical reasons, although I do like the looks of most layering pieces. I desperately need the practicality of layers. Today, for example, the high was 91/33° and the low was 52/11°. I really struggle to dress appropriately for a full day.

I have a bit of a poison eye for vests (seeing Janet's a few days ago made me rethink some, though). I do have a puffer vest I wear for outdoorsy stuff, up in the mountains, where the temp swings can be even worse. I'm also not a huge fan of wearing button downs under sweaters, as they feel constrictive to me. I do like the look, I'm just never comfortable in it.

ETA: The Pink Carnation books are super-fun. Of course, you point out those behind me and not, say, Infinite Jest. :)

Completely out of context , I just noticed you have some books of the Pink Carnation series, I found them great fun and have a couple of them. Maybe I should re-read them :)

Back to what I am supposed to be doing here...

I am thinking here about all the reasons why you wanted to do this layering formulas. I am guessing

to have easy to go formulas

to deal with the temperature swings at this time of year

to have variety of silhouettes

to have more complex outfits (?)

The last one is the one I am struggling with. Do you want to make outfits that have a 3rd(2nd) item so they look more put together, do you want to add warmth as needed but feel good in all the different layers.( I am sorry if you explained this somewhere else and I don't remember)I know that our needs regarding temperatures are very different so maybe I am overthinking this.
Do you consider adding a long vest to your wardrobe? Or one of the sleeveless tunic sweaters Angie posted about?
That way when it gets colder you could do Buttondown+ vest/sweater; dress+ vest; buttondown+ sweater+ blazer.
You also talked about a long cardigan, I think that would look great with many of the things you have here.

Your outfits are timely as tomorrow may be the first time this season when long sleeves and/or full length jeans could be worn comfortably, at least for early morning. You have some good solutions.

Great outfits, Jenn! I'm struggling with this seasonal temperature variation too. I llove fall, but the varying temps are a challenge! I love #1. The whole outfit is just so cute, and the tee is super flattering. Also, love any outfit involving the plaid shirt. #s 10 and 12 are also favorites. I'm not great at articulating why an outfit works...I just know when I like them!

If forced to choose, I would pick #1 and # 10. The proportions are so right, and everything flatters your shape so well. I think the denim jacket is perfect, and of course I love your jewelry in #10. Really nice job!

The second part of my challenge to myself in September (the first part being shopping) was to figure out some layering formulas that worked for our varied autumn climate. In the fall, we regularly have temperature swings of 30-40°F between morning and mid-afternoon, and I wanted to learn how to get through my days without changing clothes.

It sort of worked. I tried a lot of formulas, but I'll confess, I had a really hard time finding any single outfit that was perfectly comfortable for temps of both 55° (13°C) and 90° (32°C). I usually opted for hot in the afternoon over cold in the morning, mostly because I like my fall clothes better.

Here's what I tried.

Formula #1 - Denim jacket or blazer over tee/tank (scarf if necessary) - Photo 1, 13, and 14
This worked okay, but only if it didn't get too hot in the afternoons. It's easy to throw on a denim jacket when going outside, but not so great for just wearing around the house on chilly mornings.

Formula #2 - Cardigan over tank, with scarf for coverage - Photo 2
I liked this one. I prefer tanks to longer sleeves under knitwear, and a lightweight scarf isn't too much, even for warm afternoons. I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing this in professional environments, but luckily, those environments are usually air-conditioned. The scarf worked well with tank in formulas #1 and 3, as well

Formula #3 - Button-down over tee/tank (with scarf if necessary) - Photos 3-8
In case you couldn't tell, this is my absolute favorite for working at home (also for hiking!). It probably doesn't look as great as more structured toppers, but it's comfortable, simple, and easily adaptable.

Formula #4 - Jacket over silk blouse - Photo 9
This worked better than expected. I'm not entirely comfortable in silk for all my activities, but it worked amazingly well at a variety of temperatures.

Formula #5 - Denim jacket over lightweight sweater - Photo 10
Okay for cooler days and I liked the look, but too hot for these wide swings.

Formula #6 - Jacket over dress - Photos 11 and 12
One of the few formulas that was cold in the mornings rather than hot in the afternoons, probably because I was adapting summer outfits for fall, rather than vice versa.

Thoughts? Any better suggestions?
