Thank you Liesbeth - i enjoyed getting to know you better through your writing, and see the connection to your style.

Your observations are astute about fashion and style - and your place in the world and how others perceive you. I think you are dressing as true to yourself - and that you have learned how to dress in a quietly individualistic way.

Fun to read everyone's additions!
Angie, thank you for your sweet words! I am an English major who reads English novels all the time, I have been an editor (in Dutch though) and in an alternate universe with well-paying steady 9-to-5 jobs aplenty in journalism I might have been a professional writer ;). But no regrets. If I loved writing that much I'm sure I could muster the energy for a blog or something. Now I just enjoy contributing my thoughts here on occasion.
Also, I do wonder if the expectation that we all make conscious choices about our appearance isn't relatively new in history and related to the plethora of choice available. Clothes probably used to be more of an indicator of class, profession and such. I'm not saying that's better, just that there's a lot to be stressing about these days with regard to everyday choices, if you're so enclined.
And to react to Shevia, FashIntern and cat2's remarks: I'm not trying to establish a link between all INTJ's or introverts and a certain way of dressing as I would assume personality traits manifest differently in different people. And that is so interesting! Just that for me I think my not wanting to draw too much attention to myself has to do with my introversion.

You create an excellent portrait of who you are and how it is reflected in your style. Interesting about introverts - I am a very introverted person, but enjoy dressing in non-conforming outfits. I never have managed to skate by unnoticed so I suppose I went the independent thinker route .

Ha, ha, ha; I’m also an INTJ. I guess the introversion shows up mostly in my (lack of) color choices. FWIW my style changed the most after my daughter left for college and I got too old to fire or just so old that I don’t much care what others think.

Liesbeth, are you an editor, journalist or writer? English is your second or third language, and this was beautifully written, relatable, and very eloquent!

I think life has always been about conforming or defying our environmental norms. We have to pick when to conform and when to defy, and with peace in body, mind and spirit. You've achieved that state of balance, and your fabulously authentic style reflects it. WELL DONE :)

Love the overall example! There are class and cultural distinctions to the pack piece that can be baffling if you are not of the same class or cultural background. The ironic wear of Carhartt hats, shredded work clothes or of camo also don’t cross class lines very well.

Cat2, I can believe that! I think plenty of people around here will tell you I tend to go my own way. Some of them might mean it in a good way....
Seriously, though, my son and I discussed recently how “everyone is doing it” is something we are likely to see as a reason NOT to do whatever “it” is.
That brings me back to Liesbeth’s post: I prefer to do my own thing, but am aware I live in a world that highly values pack behavior. People can read so much into the way a person dresses that it just makes sense to check what messages others might get from my wish to wear....whatever. (Example—friends once had to talk me out of overalls like these. I think they are funky, like the bright color. They are universally understood in Germany as manual laborers’ clothing. https://www.engelbert-strauss......51-17.html But there are many subtler examples too)

Oh, FI, there is a lot of material on marketing to introverts that you might find interesting. It’s written for extroverts to understand introverts, because sales and marketing attracts extroverts. It confirms the notion it is harder to get us interested in trends.

Cat2, I’m on board with not following the pack. The two examples you picked to illustrate that happen to be things I’ve had in the back of my head as possibilities for me for some time now, so the effect of seeing them as examples of pack-following was kind of jarring.

Oh well now yes, this does nail it. I see how this produces the visual effect. As an observer I name your look, and it’s interesting to know what might be truly going through your mind to produce it. This has always intrigued me. I have many thoughts about what to wear, but they almost never start with the final look. Trying to start with the ‘end’ like that, I often miss the mark by a mile, lol.

Glad to hear from another introvert. I think a lot of fashion influencer posting is done by extroverts (too many of whom own the same giant hat). Some of the rest of us just want to evade negative attention and get on with our lives. I find Angie’s analytic posts on what is trending really helpful in that regard. They help me decide what to do to skate by another year. However, no one is going to get me to gallop around in equestrian boots or slice my feet to bits with gladiator sandals. I think in that regard, introverts are more willing to break with a pack than extroverts, who seem to put more of a priority on truly fitting in or in leading the fashion pack.

That’s why I like you so much. Seriously, this could’ve been me if I wrote so well. I’m an INTJ also, but before I got to the part I was delighted with how you nailed the fact that “fashion” people don’t understand that not everyone enjoys making a fuss over fashion for themselves, so where the fashion world sees lack of self-esteem, others are enjoying getting on with their lives and not fussing over fashion, except for an occasional thought about how others will read outfits. You said it much better.
The connection you make between loyalty and hanging onto clothes is also great.
Seriously, this read was worth the wait.

Hi everyone!
It’s been a busy couple of weeks but I have enjoyed ruminating on Angie’s prompt and have finally noted some stuff down about my own beliefs, values and personality. I hope you’ll enjoy reading this just as I have enjoyed your stories!

Beliefs

I believe that people will judge you by your appearance whether you like it or not. At the same time, I don’t personally believe that how you dress really reflects who you are. I have an example I find intriguing. Back in the day, Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine terrorized women all over by insisting that their lack of trying to dress well reflected a lack of self-esteem that had to be remedied. I recently read that Susannah Constantine is now a writer and a bit of a recluse, admitting to completely disregarding her own advice. She has lost all interest in fashion and dresses in fleece most days. I think given the
right circumstances, this could be me. Were society not obsessed with the notion that we must both conform and express our individuality through our clothing, I might be in fleece all the time as well (and at home, I admittedly am).

But I will generally try to work with reality, not against it. So for myself I
always look for the balance between wearing what I like and wearing what I think will make the right impression in a given situation. This has become so much a part of me that I no longer feel capable if I dress
sloppily in a situation that requires a polished outfit. So yes to Angie’s
enclothed cognition.

Values

I value independence and would say that is why I probably never look exactly right for any situation, even though before I stressed my pragmatic approach to conformity. In any outfit I still want to feel like myself. I have worn sack dresses when everyone was about figure flattery. Back in highschool when I noticed how much I didn’t fit in, I wore the minor trend of bowling shoes before I would ever have been caught dead in the much more trendy platforms. (Before noticing how I stood out, I wore leather low heeled booties! At age 13 in the nineties.).

Conscientiousness and loyalty are two more values that I was brought up with and that are very important to me. I think this manifests in the fact that I take rather good care of my clothing and that they are with me generally for longer periods of time. I also try to do my part in making more sustainable fashion choices.

Personality

I am an INTJ, so more of a big picture thinker with a methodic approach to wardrobe building. When I realized that style could be learned I applied my own analytical approach to it which had always served me well in academic settings. It’s made a world of difference and I no longer lament my lack of innate style compass. Everyone has their strengths; you just need to learn how to use them.

My introverted side comes through in my relatively safe fashion choices. I have my own preferences but they will not draw excessive attention. I do try to show some personality in subtle choices (pattern, texture, color combinations and cut). A minor part of the INTJ personality is about creativity and the five senses. I have learned that I enjoy creativity in many areas including clothes but that I must keep it light-hearted – no lofty goals or perfectionism. So I now see fashion as a fun creative outlet while always considering myself at the edge of whatever the fashion crowd is, merely playing at it.

Part of why I love this community are Angie’s mantras of DYOT and don’t let fashion boss you around. It gently nudges me back on the right path when I go into overdrive trying to find the perfect outfit (sartorially or to manage my appearance in a specific situation)!
