Sorry, lyn!!! 8o</p> <p>The book is called, <i>The Jewel </i>(I think). A teen version of Margaret Atwood's <i>Handmaid's Tale</i>. It's all about the return of feudalism and social engineering. The set up is... 'the Jewel' is the proverbial ivory tower (gated suburb) where the lucky live. The poorest of the poor are serfs, property. This girl is picked (she's auctioned off) to go serve (be a surrogate) in the Jewel (be a house slave/whipping boy), and she'll never get to leave, see her family again, etc. etc. Life will be cushier in someways, but cruel and suffocating.</p> <p>It's a teen book, so you know... she's going to single-handedly (ok, with a little help from a cute boy), blow the Jewel open.</p> <p>I still don't know what I'd want to wear. Comfy or to the nines. Combat boots or Prada pumps. I would probably pick something that reminded me of my family just like your character so it wouldn't be fashionable. I would put on a university logo tee from my DD underneath a different university logo sweatshirt from my brother, I would wear a baseball visor belonging to my DS, my DH jeans, jewelry given to me by my mother - specifically the earrings and necklace she had made out of the wedding ring she wore while married to my dad. If I could manage to get it on over everything, I would wear my step fathers favorite green jacket and my dads warm gloves even if they made it cumbersome to eat. I don't know that I have sustained cravings for any garment in that manner. Or if there is anything I'd miss wearing quite like that. I mean, when I wear a thing out, I do toss it...
