My Japanese Anemone are planted in my front garden (north facing!) and close to the house - so in some shade. Also, partially under a Japenese Maple! Our soil is clay based. I've seen them in part sun in an east facing garden

The guides say hardy zones 4-7 (we are 5) and shade to part shade.

Runcarla love the suggestion of Japanese Anemone. I'm always looking for plants that flower into fall, and put these on my list to try next year.

Wow Joy, Lilacs blooming in early November? Very strange indeed.

Runcarla, I definitely want to try the Japanese anemone if they will grow here. Late summer flowers that look so ethereal are seldom seem. Are yours in full sun?
It has been a strange growing year. A friend back in Kansas says that her neighbor's lilacs are in full bloom now.

Joy, the flowers are called Japanese Anemone. They are a fall blooming perrenial. Mine start blooming in September and go for about 8 weeks in successive waves. They seem quite hardy and disease resistant. The picture below, taken late September, is my current iPad screen saver.

Interesting about the late Iris. Some of my day lilies have started to bloom again. It has been a very strange growing year.

Carla, you have some lovely plsnts and color in your garden. What are the flowers in the last photo? I need to get a photo of my neighbor's blooming irises...in November! There are lots of roses yet. Below are some small but bright roses in our front garden and another flower that I don't know.

Summer just kept hanging on, and though we had drought, leaves remained green - until last week. The first picture is looking across the ravine that is our backyard! The others are from the garden.

Thank you so much for posting! These are lovely, and it's great to see so many plants that are new to me. You've inspired me to post some pictures of my garden, too. It's going well again, now that it's not in the 100's. I have some crazy snapdragon bushes that are about 4 years old. Somehow they survived some seriously cold weather and ice storms in those years. I'm a fan now.

Joy, have you ever tried autumn crocus? I am hoping mine will be up soon if I ever get the leaves blown out of the garden.

I planted 100 daffodils and 50 tulips (apricot and dark purple) two weeks ago.

I love that coneflower, but I am in northern New England, most of the fun new varieties I have tried don't seem to make it through the winter.

I just finished planting 50 daffodil bulbs for some color next spring. Squirrels are already digging them up but at least they don't eat them like they do tulip bulbs. Does anyone have any favorite varieties of crocus?

Thanks everyone! Angie you are right gardening really does bring me joy, I love feeling connected to nature. The cycles of gardening in a 4-season climate are just so wonderful to me, with all the predictable and unpredictable things that happen.

Danusia I'd love to share gardening ideas with you. We don't have a deer problem but DH's veg garden is constantly threatened by woodchucks, and sometimes they break in despite the electric fence and chomp away. I wonder if the deer were going for unusual stuff this year because the drought was causing their usual food to be in short supply.

elgal i have never tried to propagate sedum indoors, but I do have several of the ground cover type that spread quite well without doing anything. Maybe I'll try what you are doing.

Looks beautiful! Unfortunately, the deer have eaten many things they have never eaten before like our sedum and mums. Planning on ripping out some of our landscaping and do new planting next spring. I may just pick your brain and green thumb for suggestions.

Xtabay, yes that prickly pear always gets huge comments from people, it's a gorgeous plant (bright yellow flowers in summer) and most people don't realize there is a variety for my climate and are shocked to see it.

UmmLila maybe someone else will see this posting and tell us what it is

Joy I'm afraid the identification marker got lost on that pink flower, so I'm not sure. I'll go look it up and see if I can find out what it is. So that is Sumac? I've seen that plant and always wondered what it is. Great colors!

That variety of cone flower is gorgeous. What is it called? My submission is sumac "trees" outside a kitchen window. They don't get enough sun there. And the neighbor's Autumn purple ash which is our main view out the back. These trees are stunning this year, like living fireworks.

Late last week we had our first “frost warning”, which meant we scrambled to bring in all our houseplants that live on our deck all summer, plus throwing sheets over the tomatoes and peppers still growing in DH's veg garden. We have about 3 dozen houseplants, many quite large, and it's quite a project to move them all in fall and spring. We wait as long as possible to bring them in, so the first frost warning is a call to action. It’s a bittersweet task in the fall, because it means the seasonal end of using our screened in porch and deck. Anyway, it was a false alarm! I figured I should sneak in one last round of garden photos before the real frost arrives.

1 Prickly Pear Cactus (a variety that grows in our cold climate) with “hips” like rose mallow plants produce; supposedly you can make jelly from them.

2 cattails growing at the back of our yard at the edge of the wetlands

3 Last few gallardia blooms

4 Mums and the rare “NordstromusDeliverarius” perennial that pops up in the least expected places and does not need soil, sunlight, or water :-)

5 Not in bloom, but love the red foliage of the penstemon

6 Phlox that fell over onto the brick walk, not good for this location but could not bear to dig it up while it’s still in bloom

7 a variety of coneflower

8 Russian Sage…the flowers are almost still blue but more like grey now

9 Sedum Autumn Joy

10 A tiny flowering weed that appears everywhere this time of year, it’s a very pale lavender
