I have waist length hair and usually tie it up or drape it over a shoulder before wrapping myself in a chunky scarf. When I have tried this look- leaving my hair open and carefully placing it on either side, it lasts till precisely the first gust of wind, after that it's all down hill and all over the place! I need to keep getting my gloved hands out of my pockets to push the hair back in place and out of my eyes, knowing that it's not going to stay. And as I would take off the scarf when indoors anyway and let down my hair, I prefer keeping it up! The bright, cheery round scarf against the strong vertical lines of the moody backdrop of black and blue. I do think that what's required (or preferable) for balance purposes isn't just a long enough upper half. I think if she weren't long throughout her body, the scarf would overwhelm and, rather than a pop of color, look like a gigantic cherry atop a tiny ice cream cone. Maybe it still does! I had never noticed any problem with her hair draping down over the scarf. </p>
